शरीरपर्वतस्थायां चलायां तत्प्रसादतः । सो ऽस्यां गहनकोशायां हृद्गुहायां गुहेश्वरः
Dwelling on the mountain of the body, in its movement by his grace, he is the lord of the cave, in this deep sheath, in the cave of the heart.
मनष्षष्ठेन्द्रियाचारसत्तातीतामलात्मनः । तस्य संव्यवहारार्थं सञ्ज्ञा चिद् इति कल्पिता
For the sake of worldly dealings, a designation—'consciousness'—is imagined for him whose pure essence transcends mind, the six senses, and existence.
स एष चिन्मयस् सूक्ष्मस् सर्वव्यापी निरञ्जनः । इमं भासुरम् आभासं करोति न करोति च
He, this consciousness, subtle, all-pervading, stainless, makes this radiant appearance manifest, and yet does not make it.
सा चिद् अत्यन्तविमला जगदर्थां जगत्क्रियाम् । इमां रञ्जयति प्राज्ञ रसेनेव मधुर् लताम्
That consciousness, utterly pure, colors this world and its activities, O wise one, just as sap flavors a sweet creeper.
चारवो ये चमत्काराश् चितश् चिति यथास्थितम् । चमत्कुर्वन्ति किल ते एते केचिन् नभोऽभिधाः
Those wonders that delight, as consciousness abides in awareness, indeed produce marvels; some of these are called 'sky'.
केचिज् जीवाभिधानाश् च केचिच् चित्ताभिधानकाः । केचित् कालाभिधानाश् च केचिद् देशाभिधानकाः
Some are called 'living beings', some are called 'mind', some are called 'time', and some are called 'place'.
केचित् क्रियाभिधानाश् च केचिद् द्रव्याभिधानकाः । केचिद् भावविकारादिजाड्यचित्त्वाभिधानकाः
Some are called 'action', some are called 'substance', and some are called 'the inertness of mind arising from modifications of states'.
प्राकाश्याद्यभिधाः केचित् केचिच् चैव तमोऽभिधाः । अर्केन्द्वाद्यभिधाः केचित् केचिद् यक्षाभिधानकाः
Some are called 'brightness', some are called 'darkness', some are called 'sun and moon', and some are called 'yakṣas'.
निरिच्छस्वस्वभावेन वसन्तेन यथाङ्कुरः । जन्यते तद्वद् एवेयं जगल्लक्ष्मीश् चिदात्मना
Just as a sprout arises naturally in spring, so too does the wealth of the world arise from consciousness itself.
चिद् इमासु समग्रासु सर्वदैवैकिकैव हि । त्रैलोक्याम्बुधिसंस्थासु शरीरजलजालिका
Consciousness alone is ever present in all these, throughout the ocean of the three worlds, as the web of bodies.
शरीरपङ्कजभ्रान्तमनोभ्रमरसम्भृतम् । आस्वादयति सङ्कल्पमधु मत्ता चिदीश्वरी
The sovereign consciousness, intoxicated, savors the honey of imagination, gathered by the bee of the mind wandering among the lotus of bodies.
ससुरासुरगन्धर्वं सशैलार्णवकं जगत् । चिति स्थिरं प्रवहति जलावर्ते तृणं यथा
Consciousness steadily carries the world, with gods, demons, gandharvas, mountains, and oceans, like a blade of grass borne in a whirlpool of water.
चञ्चच्चित्तमयाचारचारचञ्चुरचक्रिकम् । संसारचक्रं चिच्चक्रे भ्राम्यति भ्रमभाजनम्
The wheel of worldly existence, made of restless mind and actions, whirls as a spinning disc of delusion, revolving as the vessel of error.
चिच् चतुर्भुजरूपेण जघानासुरमण्डलम् । कालो जलदखण्डेन सायुधेन यथातपम्
Consciousness, taking the form of one with four arms, destroyed the host of demons, just as time, armed with a fragment of cloud, dispels the sun.
चित् त्रिनेत्रतया ब्रह्मन् वृषशीतांशुचिह्नया । गौरीकमलिनीवक्त्रपद्मषण्डालितां गता
O Brahman, consciousness, as the three-eyed one marked by the bull and the cool-rayed moon, attained the state adorned by the lotus-face of Gauri.
विष्णोः पद्मालिताम् एत्य चिद् ध्यानाधीनमानसीम् । त्रयीनलिन्यास् सरसीं धत्ते पैतामहीं स्थितिम्
Having reached the lotus-adorned state of Vishnu, consciousness, whose mind is absorbed in meditation, upholds the primeval position in the lake of the triple Veda-lotus.
चितो ब्रह्मन् विचित्राणि शरीराणीह भूरिशः । पत्त्राणीव तरोर् हेम्नि केयूरादिक्रियेव वा
O Brahman, from consciousness arise countless wondrous bodies here, like leaves on a tree, or as armlets and such are fashioned from gold.
चित् समस्तसुरानीकपरिवन्दितपादया । त्रैलोक्यचूडामणितां धत्ते वासवलीलया
Consciousness, whose feet are worshipped by all the hosts of gods, by its play assumes the crest-jewelship of the three worlds.
चित् सुरासुरताम् एत्य त्रैलोक्योदरडम्बरे । पतत्य् उदेति संयाति स्वात्मनैवाब्धिवारिवत्
Consciousness, becoming both god and demon, in the vast expanse of the three worlds, falls, rises, and moves, just like the wind upon the ocean of its own self.
चिच्चन्द्रिका चतुर्दिक्कम् एवाभासं वितन्वती । विकासयति निश्शेषभूतसत्ताकुमुद्वतीम्
The moonlight of consciousness, spreading its radiance in all directions, unfolds the water-lilies of all beings, leaving nothing unopened.
चिद्दर्पणमहालक्ष्मीस् त्रिजगत् प्रतिबिम्बितम् । गृह्णात्य् अनुग्रहेणान्तस् स्वगर्भम् इव गर्भिणी
The great goddess of consciousness, like a mirror, graciously holds within herself the reflection of the three worlds, just as a pregnant woman carries her child within her womb.
चिच् चतुर्दशभूतानां मण्डलानि महान्ति च । भूतीकरोति वारिश्रीस् समुद्रत्वम् इवाम्बुधेः
Consciousness, like the wealth of water in the ocean, brings forth the vast spheres of the fourteen elements, manifesting them into being.
विचित्रालोककुसुमा घनसङ्कल्पपल्लवा । व्योमकेदारिकारूढा सत्तौघफलशालिनी
She is adorned with the wondrous flowers of worlds, bearing dense shoots of intention, established in the sky-like field, and abundant with the fruits of manifold beings.
जीवजालरजःपुञ्जा वासनारसरञ्जिता । संवेदनत्वग्वलिता चित्रेहाकलिकाकुला
She is a mass of dust from the web of living beings, tinged with the essence of tendencies, covered by the skin of perception, and crowded with countless varieties of forms.
अतीतासङ्ख्यत्रिजगत्केसरोज्ज्वलरूपिणी । अनारतस्पन्दमहाविलासोल्लासहासिनी
She shines with the radiance of countless lotus-stalks of the three worlds, ever smiling with the delight of her great, unceasing play of vibration.
सर्वर्तुपर्वपरुषा जडशैलादिगुम्फिता । विहगग्रन्थिवलिता मूलाग्रपरिवर्जिता
She is rough with all the seasons and festivals, interwoven with inert mountains and the like, entwined with the knots of birds, and devoid of a root-tip.
चिल्लतेयं विकसिता पेलवं सदसद्वपुः । विचित्रं दृश्यकुसुमं परामर्शासहं बहु
This creeper of consciousness has blossomed, delicate with the body of existence and non-existence, bearing many wondrous flowers of perception, and is difficult to grasp by touch.
अनयेह हि सर्वत्र च्छायाच्छापि विजन्यते । मन्यते तन्यते वस्तु गीयते क्रियते ऽपि च
Indeed, in her, everywhere, even mere shadows are produced; things are conceived, extended, spoken of, and even enacted.
महाचितानया नित्यं भासन्ते भास्करादयः । देहास् स्वदन्ते च मिथस् त्वन्मच्चिज्जडविभ्रमैः
By the offspring of the great Consciousness, the sun and others always shine; bodies mutually experience pleasure through the illusions of consciousness and inertness—yours, mine, and others.
विततावर्तवर्तन्या चिद्वात्येयं प्रनृत्यति । जगज्जालरजोलेखा तत्सत्ता दृश्यदेहिनी
This wind of consciousness, revolving in its vast circuit, dances forth; the network of the world is but a streak of dust, and its existence is the perceivable embodied being.
