अपारिप्लवया ऋज्व्या सुदृशा स्निग्धमुग्धया । ऋजु पश्यामि सर्वत्र तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
With a vision that is untroubled, straight, clear, gentle, and innocent, I see directly everywhere—therefore I live free from affliction.
आपादमस्तकान्ते ऽस्मिन् न देहे ममता मम । त्यक्ताहङ्कारपङ्कस्य तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
From head to foot, in this body, there is no sense of 'mine' for me; having abandoned the mire of egotism—therefore I live free from affliction.
यत् करोमि यद् अश्नामि तत् त्यक्त्वा तद्वतो ऽपि मे । मनो नैष्कर्म्यम् आदत्ते तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Whatever I do, whatever I eat, having abandoned even attachment to these, my mind does not seize upon action; by this, I live free from affliction.
यदा यदा मुने किञ्चिद् विजानामि तदा तदा । नतिम् आयामि नौद्धत्यं तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Whenever, O sage, I come to know something, at that very moment I neither become proud nor arrogant; by this, I live free from affliction.
करोमीशो ऽपि नाक्रान्तिं परितप्ये न खेदितः । दरिद्रो ऽपि न वाञ्छामि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Even when I act as a lord, I do not overstep nor am I troubled or wearied; even if poor, I do not crave; by this, I live free from affliction.
नश्यद्रूपे शरीरे ऽस्मिन्न् अनष्टात्मा चिदास्पदः । भूतवृन्दं हसाम्य् आरात् तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Though this body is perishing in form, the Self, the seat of consciousness, is not lost; I laugh at the multitude of beings from afar—by this, I live free from affliction.
आशापाशविनुन्नायाश् चित्तवृत्तेस् समाहितः । संस्पर्शं न ददाम्य् अन्तस् तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Settled in the state of mind freed from the bonds of hope and expectation, I do not allow inner contact to arise; by this, I live free from affliction.
असत्तां जगतस् सत्ताम् आत्मनः करबिल्ववत् । सुप्तः प्रबुद्धः पश्यामि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I see the unreality of the world and the reality of the Self, like a wood-apple in the hand, whether asleep or awake; by this, I live free from affliction.
क्षीणं भिन्नं श्लथं जीर्णं क्षुब्धं क्षुण्णं क्षयं गतम् । पश्यामि नववत् सर्वं तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I see all that is diminished, broken, loosened, old, agitated, crushed, or perished as if new; by this, I live free from affliction.
सुखितो ऽस्मि सुखासक्ते दुःखितो दुःखिते जने । सर्वस्य प्रियमित्रं च तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I am happy with the happy, sorrowful with the sorrowful, and a dear friend to all; by this, I live free from affliction.
आपद्य् अचलधीरो ऽस्मि जगन्मित्रं च सम्पदि । भावाभावेषु नैवास्मि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
In adversity, I remain unwavering; in prosperity, I am a friend to the world. In the presence or absence of circumstances, I am not affected; thus I live free from affliction.
नाहम् अस्मि न चान्यो मे नाहम् अन्यस्य कस्यचित् । इति मे भावितं चेतस् तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I am not myself, nor is there any other belonging to me; I am not anyone else's in any way. This conviction is established in my mind, and thus I live free from affliction.
अहं जगद् अहं व्योम देशकालक्रमाव् अहम् । अहं क्रियेति मे बुद्धिस् तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I am the world, I am the sky, I am the sequence of space and time; my understanding is, 'I am action.' Thus I live free from affliction.
घटश् चिच् चित् पटश् चित् खं चिद् वटश् शकटश् च चित् । चित् सर्वम् इति मे भावस् तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
The pot is consciousness, the cloth is consciousness, the sky is consciousness, the banyan tree and the cart are consciousness; my conviction is, 'All is consciousness.' Thus I live free from affliction.
इत्य् अहं मुनिशार्दूल त्रिलोकीकमलालिकः । भुसुण्डनामा काकोलः कथितश् चिरजीवितः
Thus, O foremost among sages, I am Bhusunda, the crow, the bee of the lotus of the three worlds, who has been described as long-lived.
ब्रह्मार्णवे विलुलितं त्रिजगत्तरङ्गम् उत्पादनाशविभवेन विभिन्नरूपम् । आलीनम् उन्नमितम् आकुलदृश्यदृश्यम् आलोकयन् प्रकलयंश् च चिरं स्थितो ऽस्मि
Tossed in the ocean of Brahman, with the waves of the three worlds arising, dissolving, and flourishing in diverse forms; absorbed, uplifted, seeing the tumultuous visible and invisible, observing and dissolving, I have remained for a long time.
एतत् ते कथितं ब्रह्मन् यथास्मि यद् इहास्मि वा । त्वदाज्ञामात्रसिद्ध्यर्थं धार्ष्ट्येन ज्ञानपारग
This, O Brahman, I have told you—how I am and what I am here—for the sake of fulfilling your command, with boldness, O master of wisdom.
अहो नु चित्रं भगवन् भवता भूषणं श्रुतेः । आत्मोदन्तः प्रकथितः परं विस्मयकारणम्
Ah, indeed, O blessed one, your account is a marvel, an ornament to the scriptures; the story of your self has been narrated, which is a cause of supreme wonder.
धन्यास् ते ये महात्मानम् अत्यन्तं चिरजीवितम् । भवन्तं परिपृच्छन्ति द्वितीयम् इव पद्मजम्
Blessed are those who question you, the great soul of endless longevity, as if you were a second Lotus-born.
वयम् अद्य भृशं धन्यास् स्वात्मोदन्तम् अखण्डितम् । यथावत् पावनं बुद्धेस् सर्वं कथितवान् असि
Today, we are truly blessed, for you have fully revealed the pure, uninterrupted story of the Self, and have explained everything that purifies the intellect.
प्रभ्रान्तं दिक्षु सर्वासु दृष्टा विबुधभूमयः । भवान् इव जगत्य् अस्मिन् न महान् अवलोकितः
I have wandered in all directions and seen the realms of the wise, but in this world, none as great as you has been found.
कथञ्चित् प्राप्यते कच्चिद् भ्रान्त्वेह हि महाजनः । न भवान् इव भव्यात्मा सुलभो जगति क्वचित्
Rarely does one encounter a great person here, even after much searching; nowhere in the world is a noble soul like you easily found.
वंशखण्डे हि कस्मिंश्चिज् जायते मौक्तिकं यथा । जगत्खण्डे हि कस्मिंश्चिज् जायते त्वादृशस् तथा
Just as a pearl is born in some fragment of bamboo, so in some fragment of the world, someone like you is born.
मया तु सुमहत् कार्यम् अद्य सम्पादितं शुभम् । पुण्यदेहो विमुक्तात्मा यद् भवान् अवलोकितः
Today, I have accomplished a most auspicious and great deed, for I have seen you, whose body is meritorious and whose soul is liberated.
तद् अस्तु तव कल्याणं प्रविशात्मगुहां शुभाम् । मध्याह्नसमयो ऽयं मे व्रजामि सुरमन्दिरम्
May blessings be upon you; enter the auspicious cave of the Self. It is midday, and I shall go to the temple of the gods.
इत्य् आकर्ण्य भुसुण्डो ऽसौ जग्राहोत्थाय पादपात् । सङ्कल्पिताभ्यां हस्ताभ्यां सुपात्रं हेमपल्लवम्
Hearing this, Bhusunda rose and, bowing, took up with both hands the golden leaf, a vessel he had prepared.
कल्पवृक्षलतापुष्पकेसरेण हिमत्विषा । तत् पात्रं मौक्तिकार्घेण पूरयाम् आस पूर्णधीः
With the icy radiance of the filaments from the flowers of the wish-fulfilling creeper, he, whose mind was full, filled that vessel with a pearl offering.
तेनार्घ्यपाद्यपात्रेण त्रिनेत्रम् इव माम् असौ । आपादमस्तकं भक्त्या पूजयाम् आस पूर्वजः
With that vessel for the ceremonial offering and washing of the feet, he, the elder, worshipped me from head to foot with devotion, as one would the three-eyed Lord.
अनुव्रज्याकदर्थेन खगेन्द्रालम् इति ब्रुवन् । विष्टराद् अहम् उत्थाय ततः खगवद् आप्लुतः
Saying, 'Enough of this following,' and 'Let the king of birds rest,' I rose from the seat and then leapt away like a bird.
व्योम्नि योजनमात्रेण मदनुव्रज्यया गतः । करं करेणावष्टभ्य बलात् संरोधितः खगः
He followed me through the sky for a distance of a yojana, grasping my hand with his own, forcibly restraining the bird.
