नित्यानित्यासु लोलासु जगत्स्थितिषु संस्थितः । अन्तर्मुखो ऽस्मि तिष्ठामि स्वयम् एवात्मनात्मनि
Amid the ever-changing and unstable states of the world, I remain established, turned inward, abiding in the self by the self alone.
अपि संरुध्यते वायुर् अपि वा सलिलं गतेः । नैतस्मात् सुसमाधानान् निरुद्धं संस्मराम्य् अहम्
Even if the wind is restrained or water is blocked from its course, I do not recall ever having this deep absorption interrupted.
प्राणापानानुसरणात् परमात्मावलोकनात् । अशोकम् अनुयातो ऽस्मि पदम् आद्यं महातपः
By following the flow of breath and beholding the Supreme Self, O great ascetic, I have attained the original, sorrowless state.
आ महाप्रलयाद् ब्रह्मन्न् उन्मज्जननिमज्जने । अयम् अद्यापि भूतानां पश्यञ् जीवामि धीरधीः
O Brahman, until the great dissolution, witnessing the arising and passing of beings, I live on with a steady mind even now.
न भूतं न भविष्यच् च चिन्तयामि कदाचन । दृष्टिम् आलम्ब्य तिष्ठामि वर्तमानाम् इहात्मनः
I never dwell on the past or the future; relying on this vision, I remain established in the present, here in the self.
यथाप्राप्तेषु कार्येषु परित्यक्तफलैषणः । सुषुप्तसमया बुद्ध्या परितिष्ठामि केवलम्
In whatever actions come as they may, having abandoned the desire for their results, I remain simply with the awareness of deep sleep.
भावाभावमयीं चिन्ताम् ईहितानीहितान्विताम् । विमुच्यात्मनि तिष्ठामि चिरं जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Having abandoned thoughts composed of existence and non-existence, filled with desires and aversions, I abide in the Self and live long, free from affliction.
प्राणापानसमायोगसमयं समनुस्मरन् । स्वयम् आत्मनि तुष्यामि तेनास्मि चिरजीवितः
Constantly recollecting the union of prāṇa and apāna, I am content within myself; by this, I live long.
इदम् अद्य मया लब्धम् इदं लप्स्यामि सुन्दरम् । इति चिन्ता न मे तेन चिरं जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Thoughts such as 'I have gained this today' or 'I will obtain that beautiful thing' do not arise in me; thus, I live long, free from affliction.
न स्तौमि न च निन्दामि क्वचित् किञ्चित् कदाचन । आत्मनो ऽन्यस्य वा साधो तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I neither praise nor blame anything, anywhere, at any time—whether of myself or another; thus, I live free from affliction.
न तुष्यति शुभप्राप्तौ नाशुभेष्व् अपि खिद्यते । मनो मम समं नित्यं तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
My mind is ever even, neither delighted by good fortune nor distressed by misfortune; thus, I live free from affliction.
परमं त्यागम् आलम्ब्य सर्वम् एव सदैव हि । जीवितादि मया त्यक्तं तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Relying on supreme renunciation, I have always abandoned everything, including life itself; thus, I live free from affliction.
प्रशान्तचापलं वीतशोकम् अस्तसमीहितम् । मनो मम मुने शान्तं तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
My mind, O sage, is peaceful—free from restlessness, devoid of sorrow, and without any striving; thus, I live free from affliction.
काष्ठं विलासिनीं शैलं तृणम् अग्निं हिमं नभः । समं सर्वत्र पश्यामि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I see wood, a woman, a mountain, grass, fire, snow, and sky as equal everywhere; thus, I live free from affliction.
किम् अद्य मम सम्प्राप्तं प्रातर् वा भविता पुनः । इति चिन्ताज्वरो नास्ति तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
There is no fever of anxiety in me, such as 'What has come to me today? What will happen tomorrow morning?'—therefore I live free from affliction.
जरामरणदुःखेषु राज्यलाभसुखेषु च । न बिभेमि न हृष्यामि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I neither fear the sorrows of old age and death, nor am I elated by the pleasures of gaining a kingdom—therefore I live free from affliction.
अयं बन्धुः परश् चायं ममायम् अयम् अन्यतः । इति ब्रह्मन् न जानामि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
O Brahman, I do not know 'This is my relative, that one is another, this is mine, that is someone else's'—therefore I live free from affliction.
आहरन् विहरंस् तिष्ठन्न् उत्तिष्ठन्न् उच्छ्वसन् स्वपन् । देहो ऽहम् इति नो वेद्मि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Whether eating, moving about, standing, rising, breathing, or sleeping, I do not perceive myself as the body—therefore I live free from affliction.
इमं संसारम् आरम्भं सुषुप्तवद् अवस्थितः । असन्तम् इव पश्यामि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I abide in this beginning of worldly existence as if in deep sleep, and I see it as if it were unreal—therefore I live free from affliction.
यथाकालम् उपायाताव् अर्थानर्थौ समौ मम । हस्ताव् इव शरीरस्थौ तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Gain and loss come to me at their proper time, both together, like two hands attached to the body—therefore I live free from affliction.
अपारिप्लवया ऋज्व्या सुदृशा स्निग्धमुग्धया । ऋजु पश्यामि सर्वत्र तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
With a vision that is untroubled, straight, clear, gentle, and innocent, I see directly everywhere—therefore I live free from affliction.
आपादमस्तकान्ते ऽस्मिन् न देहे ममता मम । त्यक्ताहङ्कारपङ्कस्य तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
From head to foot, in this body, there is no sense of 'mine' for me; having abandoned the mire of egotism—therefore I live free from affliction.
यत् करोमि यद् अश्नामि तत् त्यक्त्वा तद्वतो ऽपि मे । मनो नैष्कर्म्यम् आदत्ते तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Whatever I do, whatever I eat, having abandoned even attachment to these, my mind does not seize upon action; by this, I live free from affliction.
यदा यदा मुने किञ्चिद् विजानामि तदा तदा । नतिम् आयामि नौद्धत्यं तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Whenever, O sage, I come to know something, at that very moment I neither become proud nor arrogant; by this, I live free from affliction.
करोमीशो ऽपि नाक्रान्तिं परितप्ये न खेदितः । दरिद्रो ऽपि न वाञ्छामि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Even when I act as a lord, I do not overstep nor am I troubled or wearied; even if poor, I do not crave; by this, I live free from affliction.
नश्यद्रूपे शरीरे ऽस्मिन्न् अनष्टात्मा चिदास्पदः । भूतवृन्दं हसाम्य् आरात् तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Though this body is perishing in form, the Self, the seat of consciousness, is not lost; I laugh at the multitude of beings from afar—by this, I live free from affliction.
आशापाशविनुन्नायाश् चित्तवृत्तेस् समाहितः । संस्पर्शं न ददाम्य् अन्तस् तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
Settled in the state of mind freed from the bonds of hope and expectation, I do not allow inner contact to arise; by this, I live free from affliction.
असत्तां जगतस् सत्ताम् आत्मनः करबिल्ववत् । सुप्तः प्रबुद्धः पश्यामि तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I see the unreality of the world and the reality of the Self, like a wood-apple in the hand, whether asleep or awake; by this, I live free from affliction.
क्षीणं भिन्नं श्लथं जीर्णं क्षुब्धं क्षुण्णं क्षयं गतम् । पश्यामि नववत् सर्वं तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I see all that is diminished, broken, loosened, old, agitated, crushed, or perished as if new; by this, I live free from affliction.
सुखितो ऽस्मि सुखासक्ते दुःखितो दुःखिते जने । सर्वस्य प्रियमित्रं च तेन जीवाम्य् अनामयः
I am happy with the happy, sorrowful with the sorrowful, and a dear friend to all; by this, I live free from affliction.
