शब्दरूपरसस्पर्शगन्धैर् आभासम् आगतम् । तेनैव रहितं शान्तं चिदात्मानम् उपास्महे
We contemplate the consciousness-self, which appears through sound, form, taste, touch, and scent, yet is peaceful and devoid of these.
महामहिम्ना सहितम् अहतं सर्वकर्तृभिः । कर्तृत्वेनाप्य् अकर्तारं चिदात्मानम् उपास्महे
We contemplate the consciousness-self, which, though associated with supreme greatness and untouched by all agents, is non-doer even when appearing as doer.
अखिलम् इदम् अहं ममैव सर्वं त्व् अहम् अपि नाहम् अथेतरच् च नाहम् । इति विदितवतो जगत् क्षतं मे स्थिरम् अथ वास्तु गतज्वरो भवामि
All this is 'I', all is mine, yet I am not this, nor am I anything else; for one who knows thus, the world is healed—let it remain or not, I am free from anxiety.
इति निश्चयवन्तस् ते महान्तो विगतैनसः । सत्यासत्यपदे शान्ते समे सुखम् अवस्थिताः
Thus, those great ones, resolved and free from sin, abide happily in the peaceful state beyond true and untrue.
इति पूर्णधियो धीरास् समनीरागचेतसः । न निन्दन्ति न नन्दन्ति जीवितं मरणं तथा
Thus, those wise ones, with minds full and free from passion, neither condemn nor delight in life or death.
इत्य् अलङ्घ्यचमत्कारा नारायणभुजा इव । रेजुर् अस्खलिताकारा अपरा इव मेरवः
Thus, possessing unsurpassable wonder, they shone with unwavering form, like the arms of Nārāyaṇa or like other Meru mountains.
रेमिरे वनषण्डेषु द्वीपेषु नगरेषु च । देवोपवनमालासु स्वर्गेषु च सुरा इव
They found delight in forest groves, on islands, in cities, in divine garden clusters, and in heavens, like gods.
भ्रेमुः कुसुमपूर्णासु दोलालीलाबिलासु च । विचित्रवनलेखासु मेरुशृङ्गशिलासु च
They wandered in flower-filled swings and caves, in wondrous forest paths, and on the peaks and rocks of Meru.
चक्रुर् विजितशत्रूणि चामरच्छत्रवन्ति च । विचित्रार्थानि राज्यानि चित्राचारमयानि च
They established kingdoms, adorned with victorious banners and fly-whisks, filled with wondrous wealth and remarkable customs.
अनुजग्मुर् इमां सर्वां नानारसविचेष्टिताम् । श्रुतिस्मृत्युदितारम्भाम् इतिकर्तव्यताम् इह
They followed all the various pursuits of this world, engaging in actions prescribed by the scriptures and tradition, and in all that is considered duty here.
विलेसू रमणीयेषु ललनालास्यहारिषु । विहाराहाररम्येषु भोगाभोगेषु भूषिताः
They delighted in charming places, captivated by the dances of beautiful women, enjoying delightful pastimes and pleasures, adorned with all enjoyments and ornaments.
विचेरुश् चारुचूतासु मन्दारवलितासु च । अप्सरोगीतपूर्णासु नन्दनोद्यानभूमिषु
They wandered among lovely mango groves and mandara trees, in gardens filled with the songs of celestial nymphs, in the grounds of Nandana's paradise.
ऊषुर् आचारपूतेषु विश्रान्ताखिलजन्तुषु । यज्ञक्रियाकरालेषु गार्हस्थ्येषु यथाक्रमम्
They dwelt in households purified by righteous conduct, where all beings found rest, and where sacrificial rites were performed in proper order.
तेरुर् हतगजेन्द्रासु भ्रान्तभूरिशरासु च । भेरीभाङ्कारभीमासु सङ्ग्रामार्णववीचिषु
They crossed battlefields strewn with slain elephants and scattered with countless arrows, amidst the dreadful roar of war drums and the surging waves of combat.
तस्थुः पुरुषचिन्तासु हृतचित्तोद्धतासु च । संरम्भक्षोभरौद्रासु सर्वासु द्वन्द्वनीतिषु
They stood firm amid the anxieties of men, in minds agitated and disturbed, in all the fierce and tumultuous conflicts of duality.
मनस् तेषां तु नीरागम् अनुपाधि गतभ्रमम् । असक्तम् उत्तमं शान्तं परं सत्त्वपदं गतम्
Yet their minds were free from attachment, without any limitation or delusion, unattached, supreme, tranquil, and established in the highest state of being.
न ममज्ज क्वचिद् अपि सङ्कटेषु महत्सु च । मुहुर् अप्य् उपयातेषु कुलशैलस् सरस्स्व् इव
Just as a mountain or a lake is not submerged even when great floods repeatedly come, so I was never overwhelmed in any difficulty.
नोल्ललास विलासिन्या श्रिया परमकान्तया । परिपूर्णेन्दुलक्ष्म्येव जलराशी रघूद्वह
O descendant of Raghu, I did not delight in playful prosperity, just as the ocean, though graced by the full moon’s beauty, does not exult.
न मम्लौ दुःखशोषेण ग्रीष्मेणेव वनस्थलम् । जहर्ष च न भोगौघैर् अवश्यायैर् इवौषधिः
I did not wither from the desiccation of sorrow, like a forest scorched by summer; nor did I rejoice in waves of enjoyment, as herbs do in the monsoon’s dew.
ते हि केवलम् अव्यग्राः कुर्वन्तः कार्यपञ्जरम् । इष्टानिष्टफलं राम नाभिलेषुर् न तत्यजुः
For, O Rama, they, remaining unperturbed, simply performed their allotted tasks, neither desiring nor abandoning the fruits, whether pleasant or unpleasant.
नोदगुः कार्यसम्पत्ताव् आक्रान्ता नास्तम् आययुः । जहृषुर् न सुखप्राप्तौ मम्लुर् नैव च सङ्कटे
They did not swell with success in action, nor did they decline when beset by obstacles; they did not exult on attaining happiness, nor did they wither in adversity.
मुमुहुर् न विमोहेषु ममज्जुर् न विपत्क्रमे । शुशुचुर् न शुचा शोके रुरुदुर् न भवान् इव
They did not lose consciousness in delusion, nor sink in misfortune; they did not grieve in sorrow, nor lament like ordinary people.
प्रकृताचारसम्प्राप्तं कुर्वन्तः कर्म केवलम् । स्थिता विगतसंरम्भम् अपरा इव मेरवः
Engaged only in actions that came naturally, they remained calm and undisturbed, like other Meru mountains.
तां त्वं दृष्टिम् अवष्टभ्य राघवाघविघातिनीम् । अनहङ्कृत्यलङ्कारो विहरेह यथासुखम्
O Rama, holding to that vision which destroys the darkness of ignorance, adorned with humility, live here as you please.
यथाभूताम् इमाम् एवं पश्यन् सर्गपरम्पराम् । मेरुस्थिरो ऽब्धिगम्भीरस् समास्स्व विगतभ्रमः
Seeing this succession of creation as it truly is, remain steady as Mount Meru, deep as the ocean, calm, and free from confusion.
चिन्मात्रं सर्वम् एवेदम् इत्थम् आभासतां गतम् । नेह सत्यम् असत्यं वा क्वचिद् अप्य् अस्ति किञ्चन
All this is but pure consciousness, appearing thus as mere semblance; here, there is nothing at all that is truly real or unreal.
महत्ताम् अलम् आलम्ब्य त्यक्त्वेदम् अवहेलया । असक्तबुद्धिस् सर्वत्र भव भव्य भवक्षयी
Relying firmly on greatness, having abandoned this (world) with indifference, be unattached in mind everywhere, O one destined to end becoming.
किं रोदिषि घनोद्वेगं मूढवच् चानुशोचसि । भ्रमस्य् उद्भ्रान्तचित्तं च सोम्यावर्ते तृणं यथा
Why do you weep in such distress, and grieve like one deluded? Your mind is agitated by confusion, like grass tossed in a gentle whirlpool.
अहो नु भगवन् नूनं सम्यग्रूपं विलक्षये । त्वत्प्रसादात् प्रबुद्धो ऽस्मि सूर्यासङ्गाद् इवाम्बुजम्
Indeed, O venerable one, now I truly perceive the right form; by your grace I am awakened, like a lotus by the touch of the sun.
भ्रान्तिर् अस्तङ्गता नूनं मिहिका शरदीव मे । संशान्ताखिलसन्देहः करिष्ये वचनं तव
Surely, my delusion has set, like autumn mist; all doubts are calmed—I will carry out your instruction.
