Consciousness merges there and remains unchanging; it does not return again to suffering, for it has attained that state.
That is the cause of all causes, yet itself has no cause; it is the essence of all essences, and thus has no further essence.
Within that expansive mirror of consciousness, all perceptions of objects are reflected, just as trees on the shore are mirrored in a lake.
All these states find delight there, in the source of all flavor, and become manifest, just as the six tastes are revealed upon the tongue.
That is the place, even purer than pure, within the sky of consciousness; it alone is the true savor for all things born of flavor.
There, the multitude of worlds arises, exists, grows, is seen, remains, and dissolves.
There, what is heavy belongs to the heaviest, what is light to the lightest, what is gross to the grossest, and what is subtle to the subtlest.
There, what is distant belongs to the most distant, what is near to the nearest, what is lesser to the least, and what is greater to the greatest.
There, the radiance belongs to the radiant, darkness to the dark, substance to the substantial, and vision, O friend, to the seer.
There, each thing is something and nothing, exists and does not exist, is visible and invisible, and is myself and not myself.
Rama, by every possible effort, establish yourself in that supremely pure state, O sinless one, in whatever way you can.
When that stainless, undecaying essence of the Self is realized, the mind attains peace; become ever established in that one, all-pervading nature, liberated from worldly existence.
O bestower of honor, these various seeds have been described by you; by the application of which one is that supreme state attained quickly?
Of these seeds of suffering, whatever I have described as the highest, by the application of each, that state is quickly attained.
If, by force of personal effort, you swiftly abandon desires and stand firm in the state that is the common essence of existence,
O knower of truth, if you bind yourself even for a moment to that imperishable state, then in this very moment you attain that supreme state—enough!
Or, O dear one, if you establish yourself in the universal form of existence, then by even a little more effort here, you attain that state.
O sinless one, if, with knowledge, you abide in the essence of consciousness, then by greater and more intense effort, you reach that state.
O Raghava, meditation is not possible upon the pure object of knowledge alone, for consciousness is always present everywhere and at all times.
Whatever you think, wherever you go, wherever you stand or whatever you do—in all these, consciousness abides; indeed, that alone is consciousness.
If you make an effort to completely abandon latent tendencies, then all afflictions and diseases become weakened for you in an instant.
But, compared to previous efforts, this is considered difficult; the abandonment of latent tendencies is harder even than uprooting Mount Sumeru.
So long as the mind is not dissolved, there is no destruction of latent tendencies.
True knowledge, dissolution of the mind, and destruction of latent tendencies—these three are mutually causes of each other, and thus are difficult to accomplish.
Therefore, O Raghava, with diligent effort and discernment, having abandoned the desire for enjoyment from afar, one should resort to these three.
All these are equal; unless they are practiced repeatedly, even after hundreds of attempts, the supreme state is not attained.
The knowledge that destroys latent tendencies, the dissolution of the mind, and profound wisdom—when these are practiced together for a long time by a sage, they bear fruit.
If these are pursued individually, even for a long time, they do not grant accomplishment, just as mantras that are recited in fragments are ineffective.
Even those of great intelligence, though they may have practiced these for a long time, are unable to attain the highest state by pursuing them one by one, like soldiers who cannot conquer alone.
But when these are undertaken together with effort by the wise, they cut down the enemy of worldly existence at the root, like warriors uprooting a foe.
