Thus, the mind truly does not exist; only Brahman exists, whose nature is That. The various conceptions of objects are false, and I have abandoned them.
I am born, free from doubts, established, free from fever; as I remain, I remain, thus, free from desires.
When the mind is absent, thirst and other qualities are forcibly exhausted; when perception ceases, the various colors named by consciousness disappear.
The mind has died, desires have vanished, the cage of delusion is broken; egolessness has arisen—thus, awakened, I exist in the world.
The world is one and peaceful; there is no diversity, nor even existence as such. What else should I reflect upon within? Tell me, enough of this.
I have reached the pure state, without appearance, without beginning or end; gentle, all-pervading, subtle, I abide as the eternal Self.
Whatever exists or does not exist here—whether mind, self, or unreal— all that is more subtle than space, peaceful, infinite, and beyond grasp, pervading all.
Let the mind arise within or not, let memory come or not—what need have I for inquiry, when my indivisible Self has dawned?
The notion 'I am the inquirer' arose from ignorance; now, with inquiry, I am of boundless form—where now am I, the inquirer?
Even though the mind has died, these fanciful notions arise in me, uselessly; for what purpose do these waves of mental activity appear?
Therefore, I abandon within all fabrication of concepts—enough of this; resolved and with a peaceful mind, I remain silent in my own Self.
O Raghava, whether eating, going, sleeping, or standing, one who is wise should daily reflect with awareness upon all these activities.
Having reflected with a mind that is self-established, tranquil, and one's own, the wise remain free from agitation while engaged in ordinary actions.
Freed from pride and arrogance, with joyful intent, their radiance like the autumn moon, the great-minded dwell happily here, moving through ordinary dealings.
Such inquiry was performed long ago by the sage Samvarta, who realized the Self, as I have recounted, on Mount Vindhya.
Relying on this vision, with a mind devoted to inquiry, cross over this ocean of worldly existence gradually.
Now, O Rama, listen to another perspective that leads to liberation, as it was fearlessly maintained by the sage Vitahavya.
Vitahavya, of great brilliance, once wandered in the sky like a cloud, moving through the long caves of Mount Vindhya as the sun moves through the caves of Meru.
From this dreadful sequence of actions, which causes the wandering of worldly existence and is full of afflictions and disease, distress arose in him over time.
With the noble desire for a portion of nirvikalpa samadhi, the aged and worn one abandoned his habitual activities.
He entered his own leaf-hut, made by Rambha, fragrant and pale as a mango blossom, like a bee entering a blue lotus.
There, on a pure, level seat, spread with a deerskin, he rested on the peaceful mountain, like a cloud after the rains.
Assuming the bound lotus posture, placing his hands in a gesture upon his heels, he sat with neck firm and movement stilled, like a horn.
He gradually withdrew the abundant light scattered in all directions, entering the mountain cave at evening like the sun gathering its rays.
Step by step, he set aside external and internal sensations, and with a mind free from stain, he reflected thus.
Ah, even when withdrawn for a moment, this restless mind does not attain steadiness, like a leaf swayed by strong waves.
With the intense forms perceived by the senses, ever agitated, it leaps constantly like a betel leaf struck upon a surface.
It swiftly abandons and grasps habits intensified by the senses; when restrained from one, it rushes toward it like one who is mad.
From the pot it goes to the cloth, from the cloth to the heavy cart; the mind moves among objects like a monkey among trees.
The five gateways of the mind are surely these—sight and the rest—called the burnt-out senses; I observe them for now.
