वासवाजौ तनुत्यागी वृत्रो विततमानसः । अन्तश्शीतमना मानी चकार सुरसङ्गरम्
Vritra, the adversary of Indra, though giving up his body, with a mind spread wide, inwardly cool and self-respecting, engaged in battle with the gods.
कुर्वन् दानवकार्याणि पातालतलपालकः । अनपायं निराक्रोशं प्रह्लादो ह्लादम् आगतः
Prahlada, guardian of the lowest realm, performing the duties of the demons, attained unshakable and undisturbed joy.
शम्बरैकपरो ऽप्य् अन्तश् शम्बरैकतयोदितः । संसारशम्बरं राम शम्बरस् त्यक्तवान् इदम्
Shambara, though wholly devoted to Shambara's ways and known as such, O Rama, abandoned this tumult of worldly existence.
असक्तबुद्धिर् हरिणा कुर्वन् दानवसङ्गरम् । परां संविदम् आसाद्य मुसलस् त्यक्तवांस् तनुम्
Hari, with an unattached mind, waged battle with the Daityas; having attained the supreme consciousness, he, the wielder of the mace, abandoned his body.
सर्वामरमुखं वह्निः क्रियाजालपरो ऽप्य् अति । यज्ञलक्ष्मीं चिरं भोक्तुं मुक्त एवेह तिष्ठति
Fire, though ever engaged in the web of ritual acts and facing all the gods, remains here liberated, enjoying the wealth of sacrifice for a long time.
पीयमानस् सुरैस् सर्वैस् सोमस् समरसाशयः । क्वचिद् एति न संसङ्गम् आक्रान्तो ऽप्य् अम्बरं यथा
Soma, though drunk by all the gods and present in the midst of conflict, at times does not mingle, just as the sky, though penetrated, is never mixed.
बृहस्पतिर् देवगुरुर् दारार्थं चन्द्रयोध्य् अपि । आचरन् दिवि चित्रेहामुक्त एव व्यवस्थितः
Bṛhaspati, the preceptor of the gods, even while engaging with the moon for the sake of his wife, acts in the heavens with a wondrous body, yet remains ever free.
शुक्रो ऽम्बरतलोद्द्योती लब्धसर्वार्थपालकः । निर्विकारमतिः कालं नयत्य् असुरदैशिकः
Śukra, shining in the sky and protector of all desired things, the teacher of the demons, passes time with an unwavering mind.
जगद्भूतगणाङ्गानि चिरं सञ्चारयन्न् अपि । सर्वदा सर्वसञ्चारी मुक्त एव समीरणः
The wind, ever moving all the limbs of the world-beings for a long time, always roaming everywhere, remains ever free.
लोकाजवञ्जवीभावे प्रोद्वेगार्हो ऽप्य् अखिन्नधीः । ब्रह्मा सममना राम क्षपयत्य् आयुर् आयतम्
Brahmā, O Rāma, though worthy of disturbance in the ceaseless coming and going of worlds, with an unwearied mind and evenness of thought, spends his vast lifespan.
जरामरणयुद्धादिद्वन्द्वपञ्जरलीलया । चरतीह चिरं कालं मुक्तो ऽपि भगवान् हरिः
The blessed Hari, though liberated, moves here for a long time, playing in the cage of dualities such as old age and death, battle and the like.
मुक्तेनापि त्रिनेत्रेण सौन्दर्यतरुमञ्जरी । देहार्धे धार्यते गौरी कामुकेनेव कामुकी
Even though liberated, Gauri is held by the Three-Eyed One on half his body, like a lover keeps his beloved, as a blossom on the tree of beauty.
मुक्तयापि गले बद्धो गौर्या गौरस् त्रिलोचनः । सुशुद्ध इव मुक्तानां गणश् शशिकलामलः
Though liberated, the fair Gauri binds the fair Three-Eyed One at the neck, just as a pure string of pearls encircles the spotless crescent moon.
गुहो गहनधीर् वीरस् तारकादिरणक्रमम् । मुक्तो ऽपि कृतवान् सर्वज्ञानरत्नैकसागरः
Guha, deep-minded and heroic, though liberated, performed the slaying of Taraka and others, being the sole ocean of all the jewels of knowledge.
भृङ्गीशो रक्तमांसं स्वं स्वमात्रे प्रवितीर्णवान् । मुक्तयैव धिया राम धीरया ध्यानधौतया
Bhringi, lord of bees, offered his own flesh and blood to his mother, O Rama, with a mind purified by meditation and steadfast in liberation.
मुनिर् मुक्तस्वभावो ऽपि जगज्जङ्गलखण्डकम् । नारदो विजहारेमं लीलया कार्यशीलया
The sage Narada, though of liberated nature, did not abandon this world, the forest of existence, but remained here playfully, engaged in purposeful action.
जीवन्मुक्तमना मानी विश्वामित्रस् स्वयं प्रभुः । वेदोक्तां मखनिर्माणक्रियां समधितिष्ठति
Vishvamitra, self-mastered and living-liberated in mind, himself performed the ritual of creating sacrificial offerings as prescribed in the Vedas.
धारयत्य् अवनिं शेषः करोत्य् अर्को दिनावलीम् । यमो यमत्वं कुरुते जीवन्मुक्ततयैव हि
Shesha upholds the earth, the sun makes the succession of days, and Yama enacts his role as Death—indeed, all as living-liberated beings.
अन्ये ऽप्य् अस्मिंस् त्रिभुवने यक्षामरनरासुराः । शतशो मुक्ततां यातास् सन्तस् तिष्ठन्ति संसृतौ
Others too, in this threefold world—the yakshas, gods, humans, and demons—by the hundreds have attained liberation, yet remain in the cycle of existence.
संस्थिता व्यवहारेषु विविधाचारधारिषु । अन्तराशीतलाः केचित् केचिन् मूढाश् शिलासमाः
Some remain engaged in worldly affairs, following various customs; among them, some are inwardly cool and detached, while others are deluded, unmoving like stones.
परमं बोधम् आसाद्य केचित् काननम् आगताः । यथा भृगुभरद्वाजविश्वामित्रसहादयः
Having attained supreme knowledge, some have gone to the forest, like Bhrigu, Bharadvaja, Vishvamitra, and others.
केचित् राज्येषु तिष्ठन्ति च्छत्त्रचामरमालिताः । यथा जनकशर्यातिमान्धातृमगधादयः
Some remain in kingdoms, adorned with umbrellas and fans, like Janaka, Sharyati, Mandhata, and the kings of Magadha.
केचिद् व्योमनि तिष्ठन्ति धिष्ण्यचक्रान्तरस्थिताः । यथा बृहस्पत्युशनश्चन्द्रसूर्यमुनीश्वराः
Some dwell in the sky, established within the spaces among the heavenly spheres, like Brihaspati, Ushanas, Chandra, Surya, and the great sages.
केचित् सुरपदं याता विमानावलिम् आस्थिताः । यथाग्निवायुवरुणयमतुम्बुरुनारदाः
Some have attained the realm of the gods, residing in rows of celestial vehicles, like Agni, Vayu, Varuna, Yama, Tumburu, and Narada.
केचित् पातालकुहरे जीवन्मुक्ता व्यवस्थिताः । यथा बडिसुहोत्रान्धप्रह्लादह्लादपूर्वकाः
Some jivanmuktas are established in the caves of the netherworld, like Badi, Suhotra, Andha, Prahlada, Hlada, and Purvaka.
तिर्यग्योनिष्व् अपि सदा वर्तन्ते कृतबुद्धयः । देवयोनिष्व् अपि प्राज्ञ वर्तन्ते मूर्खबुद्धयः
Those of awakened understanding continually exist even in animal wombs; while among the gods, the ignorant also exist.
सर्वं सर्वेण सर्वत्र सर्वथा सर्वदैव हि । सम्भवत्य् एव सर्वात्मन्य् आत्मनात्मस्वरूपिणि
Indeed, everything, everywhere, in every way, at all times, arises in the all-pervading Self, which is the true nature of the Self.
विधेर् विचित्रा नियतिर् अनन्तारम्भमन्थरा । सन्निवेशांशवैचित्र्यात् सर्वं सर्वत्र दृश्यते
The wondrous order of fate, slow to begin yet endless, appears everywhere in all things due to the diversity of arrangements.
विधिर् दैवं विभुर् धाता सर्वेशश् शिव ईश्वरः । इति नामभिर् आत्मान्तः प्रत्यक्चेतन उच्यते
Fate, destiny, the all-pervading, the creator, the lord of all, Shiva, the ruler—by these names, the inner self, the inward consciousness, is spoken of.
अस्त्य् अवस्तुनि वस्त्व् अन्तः काञ्चनं सिकतास्व् इव । अस्ति वस्तुन्य् अवस्त्व् अन्तर् मलं हेमकणेष्व् इव
In the unreal, there is a trace of reality, like gold within sand; in the real, there is a trace of unreality, like impurity within gold particles.
