अलम् अतिविततैर् वचःप्रपञ्चैर् इयम् उचितेह सुखाय दृष्टिर् एका । समुपशमितवासनं मनो ऽन्तर् यदि मुदितं हि तद् उत्तमा प्रतिष्ठा
Enough of excessive and elaborate speech; here, a single vision rightly directed brings happiness. If the mind within is free from latent impressions and is joyful, that is the highest foundation.
सुरघुः परिघश् चैव विचार्येति जगद्भ्रमम् । मिथः प्रपूजितौ तुष्टौ स्वव्यापारपरौ गतौ
The gods' drum and the iron bar—considering these, the delusion of the world arises; yet, when they are mutually honored and content, each remains absorbed in its own activity.
तद् एव राघव श्रुत्वा परमं बोधकारणम् । अनेनैव विबोधेन भव लब्धास्पदस् स्फुटम्
Therefore, O Rāghava, having heard this, which is the supreme cause of awakening, by this very understanding, become firmly established in clear realization.
परया प्रज्ञया धीर विचारातततैक्ष्ण्यया । गलत्य् अलम् अहङ्कारकालमेघे हृदम्बरे
By means of supreme wisdom, with steadfastness and the sharpness born of inquiry, the cloud of ego dissolves completely in the sky of the heart.
समस्तलोकानुमते सफले ह्लादकारिणि । निर्मले वितते चेतश्शरत्काल उपस्थिते
When, with the consent of all worlds, the fruitful, delightful, pure, and expansive autumn season of the mind arrives—
ध्येये शरण्ये सुसमे सकलानन्दसम्पदि । सुप्रशस्ते चिदाकाशे स्थीयते परमात्मनि
In that state, the mind abides in the supreme Self, which is the object of meditation, the refuge, perfectly tranquil, and the abode of all bliss, in the auspicious space of consciousness.
यो नित्यम् अध्यात्ममयो नित्यम् अन्तर्मुखस् सुखी । नित्यं चिदनुसन्धानस् स न शोकेन बाध्यते
He who is always absorbed in the Self, ever inward-turned and content, constantly engaged in the contemplation of consciousness—such a one is not afflicted by sorrow.
व्यवहारपरो ऽप्य् उच्चै रागद्वेषमयो ऽपि सन् । नान्तः कलङ्कम् आदत्ते पद्मो जललवं यथा
Even if he is engaged in worldly activity, and even if he is touched by attachment and aversion, he does not take on inner stain, just as a lotus does not take on water drops.
सम्यग्विज्ञानवान् बुद्ध्वा यो ऽन्तश् शान्तमना मुनिः । न बाध्यते स मनसा करिणेव मृगाधिपः
The sage whose mind is inwardly peaceful, having truly understood and possessing right knowledge, is not disturbed by the mind, just as a lion is not disturbed by an elephant.
भोगैकशरणं दीनं न चित्तं ज्ञस्य विद्यते । नन्दने दुर्द्रुम इव ज्ञचित्तं हिमवद्वपुः
The mind of the knower does not take refuge solely in enjoyment, nor is it pitiable; the mind of the wise is like a tree in Nandana—majestic as the Himalaya.
विरक्तजायामरणे यथा दुःखी न मानवः । परिज्ञाताखिलाविद्यं तथा चित्तं न दुःखदम्
Just as a man is not distressed by the death of a wife to whom he is dispassionate, so too, when all ignorance is known, the mind does not become a source of suffering.
परिज्ञातमनोमोहो जगद्भानोद्भवात्मना । स्पृश्यते नैनसा साधू रजसेव नभस्तलम्
When the delusion of the mind is recognized by the self that arises as the light of the world, the virtuous are not touched by sin, just as the sky is not touched by dust.
अविद्यासम्परिज्ञानमात्रम् एव महौषधम् । अविद्याविततव्याधेस् तिमिरस्येव दीपकः
The mere complete recognition of ignorance is the great medicine, like a lamp for the darkness of the disease spread by ignorance.
अविद्या सम्परिज्ञाता यदैव हि तदैव हि । सा परिक्षीयते भूयस् स्वदते च न भोगभूः
When ignorance is fully recognized, at that very moment it is diminished and ceases to be a source of enjoyment.
व्यवहारपरो ऽप्य् अन्तर् असक्तमतिर् एकधीः । स्पृश्यते नैनसा साधुर् मत्स्येक्षणम् इवाम्भसा
Even one engaged in worldly activity, whose mind is unattached and unified, is not touched by sin, like a fish's gaze upon water.
प्राप्ते चिद्भास्करालोके प्रक्षीणाज्ञानयामिनी । चित्तभूः परमानन्दम् आगता ज्ञस्य राजते
When the light of consciousness dawns and the night of ignorance is ended, the field of the mind attains supreme bliss and shines for the knower.
अज्ञाननिद्रोपशमे जनो ज्ञानार्कबोधितः । तं प्रबोधम् अवाप्नोति पुनर् येन न मुह्यति
When the sleep of ignorance is pacified and a person is awakened by the sun of knowledge, he attains that awakening by which he is never again deluded.
दिनानि जीव्यते तानि सानन्दास् ते क्रियाक्रमाः । आत्मचिन्तोदिता येषु चिज्ज्योत्स्ना हृदयाम्बरे
Those days are lived joyfully, and their actions are delightful, in which the radiance of consciousness arises in the sky of the heart through reflection on the self.
नरो मोहसमुत्तीर्णस् सततस्वात्मचिन्तया । अन्तश्शीतलताम् एति स्वामृतेनेव चन्द्रमाः
A person who has crossed beyond delusion through constant contemplation of the self attains inner coolness, like the moon with its own nectar.
तानि मित्राणि शास्त्राणि तानि तानि दिनानि च । विरागोल्लासवान् यैस् स्याद् आत्मचिन्तोदयस् स्फुटम्
Those friends, those scriptures, and those days are truly valuable, by which one attains the clear arising of self-reflection, accompanied by the joy of dispassion.
चिरं शोचन्ति ते दीना जन्मजङ्गलवीरुधः । आत्मावलोकने हेला येषाम् अधिगतैनसाम्
Long do those wretched ones grieve, like wild plants in the jungle of birth, who, having acquired sin, neglect self-examination.
आशापाशशतैर् बद्धं भोगोलपसुलालसम् । जराजर्जरिताकारं शोकोच्छ्वासकदर्थितम्
Bound by hundreds of cords of desire, delighting in fleeting pleasures, their bodies worn by old age, afflicted by the sighs of sorrow.
व्यूढदुःखमहाभारं जन्मजङ्गलजीविनम् । कुकर्मकर्दमालिप्तं मोहपल्वलशायिनम्
Bearing the heavy burden of great suffering, living in the jungle of birth, smeared with the mud of evil deeds, lying in the mire of delusion.
रोगदंशावलीदष्टं कृष्टं तृष्णावरत्रया । मनोवाजिनकोत्तब्धं बन्धुबन्धननिश्चलम्
Bitten by the swarm of diseases, pulled by the reins of thirst, bound by the harness of the mind, and immobilized by the bonds of kinship.
पुत्रदारदरीजीर्णं मग्नोन्मग्नं कुकर्दमे । श्रान्तं विगतविश्रामं भग्नम् आदीर्घवर्त्मनि
Worn out by sons, wives, and relatives, sunk deep in foul mire, exhausted without rest, broken on the long path.
गमागमपरिक्षीणं संसारारण्यचारिणम् । अलब्धशीतलच्छायं तीव्रतापोपतापितम्
Depleted by constant coming and going, wandering in the forest of worldly existence, unable to find cool shade, scorched by intense heat.
आकारभासुरं दीनं वाहैर् आक्रान्तम् इन्द्रियैः । कर्मकर्णीरथाक्रान्तं तान्तं दुष्कृतताडनैः
Appearing radiant in form yet miserable, overwhelmed by the winds of the senses, overtaken by the chariot of actions, tormented by the blows of evil deeds.
आविर्भावतिरोभावचक्रावर्तदुरुद्वहम् । अज्ञानविकटाटव्यां लुठन्तं भग्नगात्रकम्
Tossed about in the dreadful forest of ignorance, bearing the heavy burden of the cycle of appearance and disappearance, his limbs broken, he wanders helplessly.
निजानर्थस्खदामग्नं सीदमानम् अकिञ्चनम् । सन्नाङ्गं कर्मभारेण करुणाक्रन्दकारिणम्
Immersed in the mire of his own misfortunes, sinking, destitute, his body weakened by the weight of actions, he becomes an object of pity, crying out in distress.
राम जीवबलीवर्दम् इमं संसारपल्वलात् । परमं यत्नम् आस्थाय चिरम् उत्तारयेद् बलात्
O Rama, this living being, like an ox trapped in the mire of worldly existence, must be forcefully rescued with utmost effort, even if it takes a long time.
