Once, a great calamity befell Parigha's realm, sudden and vast, arising from the misdeeds of the people, like the end of an age in the cycle of existence.
Many people perished there, their lives lost to hunger, just as successive beings are consumed in a blazing forest fire.
Seeing that suffering, Parigha fell into incomparable despair and abandoned his entire kingdom, as a traveler leaves a village that has been burned.
Unable to prevent the destruction of his people, yet possessing detachment, he went to the forest to perform austerity, like the supreme sage Jina.
Unknown to the citizens, in some distant forest, he dwelled with a mind free from attachment, as if in another world.
Practicing austerity with a tranquil mind, self-controlled, dwelling in a cave, he ate there only fallen, dry leaves by himself.
For a long time, consuming only dry leaves like fire consumes fuel, he became known among the ascetics as Parṇāda, the leaf-eater.
From then on, that best of royal sages, called Parṇāda, became renowned in the hermitages of sages throughout Jambudvīpa.
Then, after a thousand years, through severe austerity and the force of practice, he attained knowledge born of the clarity of the self.
He became free from dualities, without passion, seeing all equally, indifferent, without pity or attachment, liberated while living, with awakened understanding.
He wandered as he wished in this world of three realms, together with the perfected and accomplished beings, like a swan with bees in a lotus pond.
Once, the palace of King Hemachūḍa, adorned with jewels, appeared like another peak of Mount Meru.
There, the two old friends honored each other, both having attained complete knowledge and emerged from the pit of ignorance.
Ah, truly, my good deeds have borne fruit, for I have come to meet you—thus they spoke to each other.
Embracing each other, their forms beyond reproach, they sat together on one seat, like the moon and sun on a mountain.
My mind has attained supreme bliss upon seeing you, just as the moon's disk, though submerged, regains its inner coolness.
Genuine friendship, when separated, spreads into a hundred branches, like a tree on a riverbank that, though cut, sends out new shoots.
Remembering those free and joyful conversations, those playful acts and deeds of the past, O noble one, I rejoice again and again.
I have attained this knowledge through you, just as you, O sinless one, attained knowledge by the grace of Māṇḍavya, which arises from the grace of the Supreme Self.
