विवेश परम् आद्यं तत् कारणं कारणेश्वरम् । प्रज्ञया सरिता वारिपूरः पूर्णम् इवाम्बुधिम्
He entered the supreme, the primal cause, the Lord of causes, by means of wisdom, as a river full of water merges into the full ocean.
अधिगतविमलैकरूपतेजा गगनदशां समुपेत्य शान्तशोकः । अलम् अभवद् असौ परं स्वरूपं घटखम् इवाम्बरसंयुतं महात्मा
Having attained the pure, singular radiance of his own nature, reaching the state of the sky, free from sorrow, that great soul became one with his highest self, like a pot-space united with the vast sky.
एतां दृष्टिम् अवष्टभ्य न मनः परितप्यते । घोरे तमसि निर्मग्नं लब्धदीपश् शिशुर् यथा
Relying on this vision, the mind is not tormented, just as a child immersed in deep darkness finds relief upon obtaining a lamp.
विवेकावस्थया चेतस् तन्व्यैवायाति निर्वृतिम् । पतञ् श्वभ्रे दृढतृणप्रचयालम्बनाद् इव
With the mind established in discernment, one attains peace, just as someone falling into an abyss finds support by grasping a firm bundle of grass.
बुद्ध्वैतां पावनीं दृष्टिं भावयित्वाप्य् उदाहरन् । नित्यम् एकसमाधानो भव भूषितभूतलः
Having understood and contemplated this purifying vision, and repeatedly reciting it, always remain established in samadhi, adorned upon the earth.
कथम् एकसमाधानं कीदृशं वा मुनीश्वर । वाताहतमयूराङ्गरुहलोलं मनो भवेत्
O sage among sages, how can the mind, struck by the wind and restless like the feathers of a peacock, attain single-pointed concentration, and what is its nature?
शृणु तस्यैव सुरघोः प्रबुद्धस्य सतस् तदा । पर्णादस्य च राजर्षेस् संवादम् इमम् अद्भुतम्
Listen to this marvelous conversation between Suragha, awakened and noble, and the royal sage Parṇāda.
राघवैकसमाधानबोधितायोदितात्मनोः । परस्परसमालापम् इमं प्रकटयामि ते
I shall reveal to you the mutual dialogue between Rāghava and the one awakened to single-pointed concentration, each expressing their own insight.
बभूव पारसीकानां पार्थिवः परवीरहा । परिघो नाम विख्यातः परिघस् स्यन्दने यथा
There was a king among the Persians, renowned as Parigha, destroyer of enemy heroes, famed as Parigha just as a bar is known in a chariot.
स बभूव परं मित्रं सुरघो रघुनन्दन । नन्दनोद्यानसंस्थस्य मदनस्येव माधवः
Suragha became his closest friend, O delight of the Raghu lineage, just as Mādhava is to Madana in the garden of Nandana.
कदाचित् परिघस्याभूद् अकाण्डं मण्डले महत् । कल्पान्त इव संसारे प्रजादुष्कृतदोषजम्
Once, a great calamity befell Parigha's realm, sudden and vast, arising from the misdeeds of the people, like the end of an age in the cycle of existence.
विनेशुर् जनतास् तत्र बह्व्यः क्षुत्क्षतजीविताः । ज्वलिते विपिने वह्नौ यथा भूतपरम्पराः
Many people perished there, their lives lost to hunger, just as successive beings are consumed in a blazing forest fire.
तद्दुःखं परिघो दृष्ट्वा विषादम् अतुलं ययौ । तत्याज चाखिलं राज्यं दग्धं ग्रामम् इवाध्वगः
Seeing that suffering, Parigha fell into incomparable despair and abandoned his entire kingdom, as a traveler leaves a village that has been burned.
प्रजानाशप्रतीकारेष्व् असमर्थो विरागवान् । जगाम विपिनं कर्तुं तपो जिनमुनीन्द्रवत्
Unable to prevent the destruction of his people, yet possessing detachment, he went to the forest to perform austerity, like the supreme sage Jina.
पौराणाम् अपरिज्ञातः कस्मिंश्चिद् दूरकानने । स उवास विरक्तात्मा लोकान्तर इवापरे
Unknown to the citizens, in some distant forest, he dwelled with a mind free from attachment, as if in another world.
तपश् चरञ् शान्तमतिर् दान्तः कन्दरमन्दिरः । स्वयं शीर्णानि शुष्काणि तत्र पर्णान्य् अभक्षयत्
Practicing austerity with a tranquil mind, self-controlled, dwelling in a cave, he ate there only fallen, dry leaves by himself.
चिरं हुताशवच् छुष्कपर्णान्य् एवाथ भक्षयन् । पर्णाद इति नामासौ प्राप मध्ये तपस्विनाम्
For a long time, consuming only dry leaves like fire consumes fuel, he became known among the ascetics as Parṇāda, the leaf-eater.
ततः प्रभृति पर्णादनामा राजर्षिसत्तमः । जम्बुद्वीपे बभूवासौ विख्यातो मुनिसद्मसु
From then on, that best of royal sages, called Parṇāda, became renowned in the hermitages of sages throughout Jambudvīpa.
ततो वर्षसहस्रेण तपसा दारुणात्मना । प्रापद् अभ्यासवशतो ज्ञानम् आत्मप्रसादजम्
Then, after a thousand years, through severe austerity and the force of practice, he attained knowledge born of the clarity of the self.
बभूव विगतद्वन्द्वो नीरागस् समदर्शनः । निरीहो निरनुक्रोशो जीवन्मुक्तः प्रबुद्धधीः
He became free from dualities, without passion, seeing all equally, indifferent, without pity or attachment, liberated while living, with awakened understanding.
विजहार यथाकामं त्रिलोकीमठिकाम् इमाम् । सिद्धसाध्यैस् समं साधो सहंसो ऽलिर् इवाब्जिनीम्
He wandered as he wished in this world of three realms, together with the perfected and accomplished beings, like a swan with bees in a lotus pond.
एकदा तस्य सदनं हेमचूडमहीपतेः । प्राप रत्नविनिर्माणं मेरोश् शृङ्गम् इवापरम्
Once, the palace of King Hemachūḍa, adorned with jewels, appeared like another peak of Mount Meru.
ते तत्र प्राक्तने मित्रे पूजाम् अकुरुतां मिथः । पूर्णां विज्ञातविज्ञेयौ मौर्ख्यगर्ताद् विनिर्गते
There, the two old friends honored each other, both having attained complete knowledge and emerged from the pit of ignorance.
अहो नु मम कल्याणैः फलितं बत पावनैः । सम्प्राप्तवान् अहं यत् त्वाम् इत्य् अन्योऽन्यम् अथोचतुः
Ah, truly, my good deeds have borne fruit, for I have come to meet you—thus they spoke to each other.
आलिङ्गितशरीरौ ताव् अन्योऽन्यानिन्दिताकृती । एकासने विविशतुश् चन्द्रार्काव् इव भूधरे
Embracing each other, their forms beyond reproach, they sat together on one seat, like the moon and sun on a mountain.
परमानन्दम् आयातं चेतस् त्वद्दर्शनेन मे । चन्द्रबिम्ब इवोन्मग्नम् अन्तश्शीतलतां गतम्
My mind has attained supreme bliss upon seeing you, just as the moon's disk, though submerged, regains its inner coolness.
अकृत्रिमं सुहृत्प्रेम वियोगे शतशाखताम् । प्रयाति पल्वलतटे छिन्नरूढ इव द्रुमः
Genuine friendship, when separated, spreads into a hundred branches, like a tree on a riverbank that, though cut, sends out new shoots.
विस्रब्धांस् तान् कथालापांस् ता लीलास् तच् च चेष्टितम् । संस्मृत्य प्राक्तनं साधो हृष्याम्य् एव पुनः पुनः
Remembering those free and joyful conversations, those playful acts and deeds of the past, O noble one, I rejoice again and again.
ज्ञानम् एतन् मया प्राप्तं त्वया ज्ञानं यथानघ । माण्डव्यस्य प्रसादेन परमात्मप्रसादजम्
I have attained this knowledge through you, just as you, O sinless one, attained knowledge by the grace of Māṇḍavya, which arises from the grace of the Supreme Self.
अद्य कच्चिद् अदुःखस् त्वं कच्चिद् विश्रान्तवान् असि । परमे कारणे मेराव् इव भूमण्डलाधिप
Today, are you free from sorrow? Have you found rest in the Supreme Cause, like the lord of the earth upon Mount Meru?
