Through discernment, one must forcibly direct the mind, which has been led astray by lack of discrimination, with determined effort, following the method of scripture and guidance of the wise.
The primary cause for perceiving the Supreme Self is the self itself; just as a jewel fallen into deep water is drawn out by another jewel.
It is the self alone that should abandon the sufferings it has experienced; therefore, the self alone is regarded as the sole cause in the knowledge of the self.

In all states of present and future existence, maintain a single-pointed awareness; through continual attention to your own consciousness, be intent on absorption.
In flight, in battle, in sorrow and in joy, in waking, dreaming, and deep sleep—be devoted to your own awareness.

Free from the fever of hope, beyond the marks of good and evil, with no view of what is desirable or undesirable—be devoted to the essence of consciousness.
Without inwardly touching your own perceptions of agent, action, and instrument, and established in the supportless, undivided state—be devoted to pure consciousness alone.

Freed from the state of manifoldness and non-manifoldness, established in the intention of liberation, be the lamp that illumines all calculation—be devoted to pure consciousness alone.
Having abandoned the sense of self and other, undivided amidst the world, relying on your own self like a pillar of diamond, be steadfast.
Cutting the inner bonds of the mind, which take the form of hopes, with noble and steadfast intelligence, attain a state beyond both virtue and vice.
Once you attain the essence, which is self-awareness, even deadly poison will become nectar for you.

For one established in the state of bliss, O Rama, even the elixir of life appears tasteless when observing their own nature.
We are not ashamed before those men who have attained their own nature; the rest, though called men and long-armed, are but donkeys.
Mountains become dwarfed before one who has reached the highest peak, established in the exaltation of self-awareness, just as elephants make a hill seem small.
For one whose inner vision is at the boundary of the invisible seer, even the sun and all the luminaries do not add brightness to the divine eye of self-awareness.

Just as the sun, fire, moon, jewels, and stars shine with their own light, so too, in the world, those noble ones who know the knower and the known shine forth.

Indeed, one ignorant of the Self is a wretched body, though moving about on earth; he wanders like a corpse, while the knower of the Self is truly conscious.
Self-knowledge departs far away when the mind becomes fattened, just as the pure radiance of light disappears when a great cloud arises.
