O Lord, remembering that wondrous state of being an outcaste in my own self, and this illusory world of transmigration, my mind is utterly bewildered.
Having spoken thus, for the removal of great delusion, immediately engage me in this pure action as it truly is.
O Brahman, this world is the vast spectacle of illusion, a grand display of Maya, in which all wondrous creations arise and spread forth.
Out of delusion, you saw that in the city of the Hunas and the Kiras; thus it happens, for people indeed perceive such confusion.
Just as you saw the Hunas and the Kiras in that confusion, so too others see such errors; though baseless, they appear true due to simultaneous occurrence.
Now listen, O blameless one, I will tell you as it truly is, so that your anxiety may become slender, like the tender shoot of a pathway creeper.
That one named Katañjaka, a dog-eater in the region of the Hunas, by that very arrangement, existed in that way formerly.
In the same way, after attaining another wife and traveling to a different land, he became king of the Kiras and then entered the fire.
At that time, only in your mind, like something seen in water, the existence of Katañjaka’s conduct appeared thus.
Sometimes, the mind thoroughly forgets even what has been seen and experienced; at other times, it perceives what has never been seen, as if it had been.
Just as there is confusion in dreams, fantasies, and the states of the elements, so too, O dear one, is confusion seen by the mind even while awake.
Just as those who see across the three times perceive things situated in the past, future, and present, so too, O Gādhi, does the mind apprehend the deeds of Kaṭañja.
He who knows the Self does not become absorbed in thoughts like 'This is me, that is mine'; but the one who does not know the Self sees in this way: 'This is me, that is mine.'
The knower of truth, seeing all as 'I alone am everything,' does not sink; he does not grasp distinctions or the notion of separateness in objects.
Therefore, even when immersed among the delusions and confusions that bring pleasure and pain, he does not sink—just as a gourd vessel does not sink in water.
But you, your mind seized by the net of latent tendencies, are as if unconscious, like one afflicted by a lingering disease, not having attained well-being.
Because your knowledge is incomplete, you are unable to dispel the confusion of the mind, just as one who does not know the proper mantra cannot dispel a cloud.
Whatever appears to you instantly in the mind alone, you are seized by that in a moment, just as a tree is overtaken by a swift flood.
If, in this world, you stand firm having mastered all the phases of the wheel of illusion that arise from the navel of consciousness, then nothing can disturb you.
You, rise up to the mountain grove and, with unwavering mind, practice austerity for ten years; thereafter, you will attain knowledge of the infinite.
Having spoken thus, the lotus-eyed one vanished right there, like the wind, like a cloud, like a lamp, or like the swelling Yamuna, in an instant.
Gadhi attained supreme dispassion born of discernment, like a tree at the end of autumn season loses its savor.
He mildly reproached the strange, inconsistent play of the elements, his mind freed from the great delusion, no longer bewildered.
With a heart softened by compassion, he went for discipline and supreme glory, seeking rest like a rain-cloud approaches a mountain.
There, having cast off all desires, he performed austerity for ten years; by that, he attained self-knowledge.
Then, having attained his own true being, the great soul, free from fear and delusion, without desire for enjoyment in the realm of experience, ever joyful in the form of a liberated being while living, peaceful, like the full moon, his mind undisturbed and complete.
In this way, O delight of the Raghu lineage, this supreme illusion is vast, difficult to comprehend, and produces great delusion; it is subtle and belongs to the Supreme Self.
Where is the perception of confusion seen in a dream lasting but two moments, and where is the wandering on earth of a dog-eater, enjoyed over many years?
Where is the state of confusion apprehended, where is direct perception, where is undoubted unreality, and where is true transformation?
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, I say: this illusion is indeed extensive; enough! It entangles those whose minds are inattentive in extreme difficulty.
