Having thus realized his own story among the people, he again worshipped Hari, who was dwelling in a mountain cave.
Then Janardana came to him in a short time; for with even a single act of worship, Madhava becomes a friend.
The blessed Lord, gracious as a raincloud to a peacock, spoke to Gadhi: 'Why do you again seek austerity? What do you desire?'
O Lord, I have wandered for six months among the Huna and Kirata peoples; yet nowhere, not even in their stories, is there any mention of my own account.
I was told, 'You saw the land of the Hunas by illusion'; but, Lord, is the word of the great for the destruction of delusion, or for the increase of confusion?
By a chance conjunction, the state of an outcaste appears in the mind; in the same way, the reflections of all the lowly and the birds are seen.
Therefore, O dear one, whatever account they relate to you as true—know that an appearance does not revert again to non-appearance.
A house at the edge of a village was built by some outcaste; just as you saw it, it turned into a heap of broken bricks.
Sometimes, a single vision arises for many people, just as the movement of a crow and a palm fruit coincide; for the workings of the mind are indeed strange.
In the same way, many people see one dream, like those whose minds are made sluggish by sleep, confusion, wine, or intoxication.
Just as many deer may be found in a single forest meadow during play.
Many people strive at the same time with a single reflected action, just as trees bear their own fruits in season.
The teaching that time grants permission or obstruction is only a notion, O brahmin; for time truly abides only in the mind.
The Lord, Time, is formless; he is truly Brahman, known as the unborn. He neither abandons nor takes anything from anyone at all.
But this worldly time, consisting of years, aeons, and ages, is conceived along with the multitude of objects, and those objects, in turn, are conceived through it.
Those whose minds are confused by the appearance of similar perceptions have thus seen it, with the rise and fall of fame and disgrace.
Engaged in his own activity, reflecting upon himself with his intellect, the sage, his mind freed from delusion, remained here, saying, 'I will go.'
Having spoken thus, the Lord Viṣṇu, the sovereign, disappeared; Gādhi remained in the cave, with a mind endowed with supreme strength.
Then, after a few months had passed in the mountain, the twice-born one again began to worship the lotus-handed Lord.
And once, he saw the Lord arrive, bowed to him, worshipped him in his mind with devotion, and spoke to the Lord.
O Lord, remembering that wondrous state of being an outcaste in my own self, and this illusory world of transmigration, my mind is utterly bewildered.
Having spoken thus, for the removal of great delusion, immediately engage me in this pure action as it truly is.
O Brahman, this world is the vast spectacle of illusion, a grand display of Maya, in which all wondrous creations arise and spread forth.
Out of delusion, you saw that in the city of the Hunas and the Kiras; thus it happens, for people indeed perceive such confusion.
Just as you saw the Hunas and the Kiras in that confusion, so too others see such errors; though baseless, they appear true due to simultaneous occurrence.
Now listen, O blameless one, I will tell you as it truly is, so that your anxiety may become slender, like the tender shoot of a pathway creeper.
That one named Katañjaka, a dog-eater in the region of the Hunas, by that very arrangement, existed in that way formerly.
In the same way, after attaining another wife and traveling to a different land, he became king of the Kiras and then entered the fire.
At that time, only in your mind, like something seen in water, the existence of Katañjaka’s conduct appeared thus.
Sometimes, the mind thoroughly forgets even what has been seen and experienced; at other times, it perceives what has never been seen, as if it had been.
