जीवन्मुक्तेन भवता राज्य एवेह तिष्ठता । क्षपणीया गतोद्वेगम् आकल्पान्तम् इयं तनुः
As a liberated being living here, you should remain in the kingdom; this body, now free from agitation, must be maintained until the end of the age.
तनौ कल्पान्तशीर्णायां स्वे महिम्नि त्वयानघ । वस्तव्यं स्फुटिते कुम्भे कुम्भाकाशेन खे यथा
When this body is worn out at the end of the age, O sinless one, you shall abide in your own glory, as space remains in a broken pot, merged with the sky.
कल्पान्तस्थायिनी शुद्धा दृष्टलोकपरावरा । इयं तव तनुर् जाता जीवन्मुक्तिविलासिनी
This body of yours, pure and enduring until the end of the age, perceiving all worlds, has become the play of a liberated life.
नोदिता द्वादशादित्या न विलीनास् शिलोच्चयाः । न जगज् ज्वलितं साधो तनुं त्यजसि किं मुधा
The twelve suns have not risen, the mountains have not dissolved, the world is not ablaze—O noble one, why do you abandon the body in vain?
वायुर् वहति नोन्मत्तस् त्रिलोकीभस्मधूसरः । लोलामरकपालाङ्कस् तनुं त्यजसि किं मुधा
The wind is not madly blowing, turning the three worlds to ashes and dust, nor are the skull-marked directions unsteady—why do you abandon the body in vain?
अशोक इव मञ्जर्यः पुष्करावर्तविद्युतः । न स्फुरन्ति जगत्कोशे तनुं त्यजसि किं मुधा
Like the fresh shoots of the ashoka tree, or the lightning in the whorls of lotuses, nothing stirs in the sphere of the world—why do you abandon the body in vain?
धारासाररणच्छैलाः प्रज्वलज्ज्वलनोज्ज्वलाः । ककुभो न विशीर्यन्ते तनुं त्यजसि किं मुधा
The mountain peaks scorched by torrents of fire do not shatter the quarters—why do you abandon the body in vain?
न ब्रह्मविष्णुरुद्राख्यत्रयशेषम् इदं जगत् । स्थितं जरढजीमूतं तनुं त्यजसि किं मुधा
This world, with all that is called Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra, remains, aged and clouded—why do you abandon the body in vain?
स्फुटदद्रीन्द्रटाङ्कारकरालाराववन्ति खे । कल्पाभ्राणि न गर्जन्ति तनुं त्यजसि किं मुधा
The clouds of the aeon do not thunder in the sky with the dreadful crash of splitting great mountains—why do you abandon the body in vain?
अहं भूतावकीर्णासु सालोकासु खगध्वजः । विहरामि दशाशासु मा देहम् अवधीरय
I, the banner of the birds, roam in all directions among worlds filled with beings—do not despise the body.
इमे वयम् इमे शैला भूतानीमान्य् अयं भवान् । इदं जगद् इदं व्योम मा देहम् अवधीरय
These are we, these are the mountains, these are the beings, this is you, this is the world, this is the sky—do not despise the body.
पीवराज्ञानयोगेन यस्य पर्याकुलं मनः । दुःखानि विनिकृन्तन्ति मरणं तस्य राजते
For one whose mind is agitated by the weighty union with ignorance, sufferings cut him down, and death reigns over him.
कृशो ऽतिदुःखी मूढो ऽहम् एताश् चान्याश् च भावनाः । मतिं यस्यावलुम्पन्ति मरणं तस्य राजते
For one whose mind is seized by thoughts such as 'I am weak, extremely miserable, and deluded,' and others like these, death reigns over him.
आशापाशनिबद्धो ऽन्तर् इतश् चेतश् च नीयते । यो विलोलमनोवृत्त्या मरणं तस्य राजते
For one whose inner self is bound by the cords of desire and is dragged here and there by restless mental activity, death reigns over him.
यस्य तृष्णाः प्रभञ्जन्ति हृदयं हृतभावनाः । कुगेहम् इव गर्गट्यो मरणं तस्य राजते
For one whose heart is shattered by cravings, whose thoughts are stolen away, like rats breaking down a wretched house, death reigns over him.
चित्तवृत्तिलता यस्य तालोत्तालमनोवने । फलिता सुखदुःखाभ्यां मरणं तस्य राजते
For one whose vine of mental tendencies has borne fruit of pleasure and pain in the forest of the mind, swaying like a palm tree, death reigns over him.
रोमराजिलताजालं यस्येमं देहदुर्द्रुमम् । अनर्थौघो हरत्य् उच्चैर् मरणं तस्य राजते
For one whose body, that wretched tree, is covered with a network of hair like lines, and is loudly swept away by a flood of misfortune, death reigns over him.
यस्य स्वदेहविपिनम् आधिव्याधिदवाग्नयः । दहन्ति लोलाङ्गलतं मरणं तस्य राजते
For one whose own bodily forest is burned by the wildfires of affliction and disease, and whose restless limbs are scorched, death reigns over him.
कामकोपात्मको यस्य स्फुरत्य् अजगरस् तनौ । अन्तश् शुष्कद्रुमस्येव मरणं तस्य राजते
For one in whose body the serpent of desire and anger stirs, as within a dry tree, death reigns over him.
यो ऽयं देहपरित्यागस् तल् लोके मरणं स्मृतम् । न सता नासता तेन कारणं वेद्यवेदिनाम्
What is called death in that world is merely the abandonment of the body; for those who know and those who do not, it is neither truly real nor unreal.
यस्य नोत्क्रामति मतिस् स्वात्मतत्त्वावलोकनात् । यथार्थदर्शिनो ज्ञस्य जीवितं तस्य शोभते
For one whose mind does not depart from the contemplation of the truth of their own self, whose vision is as it truly is, life shines forth.
यस्य नाहङ्कृतो भावो बुद्धिर् यस्य न लिप्यते । यस् समस् सर्वभावेषु जीवितं तस्य शोभते
For one whose sense of 'I' is absent, whose intellect is unstained, who is equal in all conditions, life shines forth.
यो ऽन्तश्शीतलया बुद्ध्या रागद्वेषविमुक्तया । साक्षिवत् पश्यतीदं हि जीवितं तस्य शोभते
For one who, with a mind cooled within and freed from attachment and aversion, perceives all as a witness, life shines forth.
येन सम्यक् परिज्ञाय हेयोपादेयम् उज्झता । चित्तस्यान्ते ऽर्पितं चित्तं जीवितं तस्य शोभते
For one who, having fully discerned what is to be accepted and rejected, has renounced them, and has placed the mind at the end of the mind, life shines forth.
अवस्तुसदृशे वस्तुन्य् अस्तसङ्कल्पनामले । येनालीनं कृतं चेतो जीवितं तस्य शोभते
For one whose mind has been merged in the pure reality, resembling the absence of objects and free from all conceptualization, life shines forth.
सत्यां दृष्टिम् अवष्टभ्य लीलयेयं जगत्क्रिया । क्रियते ऽवासनं येन जीवितं तस्य शोभते
For one who, holding to the vision of truth, effortlessly performs the actions of the world without any latent impressions, life shines forth.
नान्तस् तुष्यति नोद्वेगम् एति यो विहरन्न् अपि । हेयोपादेयसम्प्राप्तौ जीवितं तस्य शोभते
For one who, even while acting, neither rejoices nor is disturbed within, and remains unaffected by what is to be accepted or rejected, life shines forth.
शुद्धपक्षश् च शुद्धश् च हंसौघस् सरसो यथा । यस्माद् गुणौघो निर्याति जीवितं तस्य शोभते
Just as a flock of pure swans in a lake is pure, so too is the one from whom a multitude of virtues arises—his life shines forth.
यस्मिञ् श्रुतिपथं याते दृष्टे स्मृतिम् उपागते । आनन्दं यान्ति भूतानि जीवितं तस्य शोभते
In whom, when the path of hearing is attained and direct perception and memory arise, all beings find joy—his life shines forth.
यस्योदयेन हृदयेषु जनाम्बुजानि जीवालिमन्ति सकलानि विकासवन्ति । तस्यावभाति चिरजीवितम् अक्षयेन्दोर् आपूर्णतेव दनुजेश्वर नेतरस्य
By whose rising, the lotuses of people's hearts, filled with the essence of life, all blossom—his long life shines, like the ever-full moon, not like that of the lord of demons.
