Accompanied by two or three chief Asuras, Hari entered the abode of the Asuras, as the moon, adorned with stars, enters the sky.
Seated on Garuda’s throne, fanned by Lakshmi with a yak-tail whisk, surrounded by his weapons and attendants, and praised by the gods and sages, he entered.
Vishnu, uttering 'O great-souled one, awaken!', sounded the conch Panchajanya, reverberating through all the quarters.
By that great sound, the very life-breath of Vishnu, the quarters were shaken at once, like the ocean and clouds at the end of an aeon.
The Asura host, seized by sudden fear, fell to the ground, like a flock of royal swans at the roar of a thundercloud.
The followers of Vishnu, freed from fear and filled with joy, rejoiced, like a cluster of jasmine flowers blossoming at the sound of rainclouds.
The lord of the Daityas gradually regained awareness, like a kadamba tree in the forest slowly blossoming with flowers at the sound of thunderclouds.
Then the vital force, rising through the opening at the crown of the head, gradually pervaded the demon, just as the Ganges fills the entire ocean.
In a moment, the glory of the vital force completely pervaded the demon, as the sun's radiance fills the world after it rises.
When the nine channels of the vital energies became active, his consciousness, reflected in the mirror of the vital force, turned inward toward awareness.
As the mind turned toward consciousness, it attained the state of pure awareness, just as the beauty of a face appears doubled when reflected in a mirror, O Raghava.
As his mind began to sprout and his eyes inclined to open, both gradually blossomed, like a blue lotus opening at dawn.
With the awareness of the channels touched by the ascending and descending breaths, a vibration arose in him, like the trembling of a lotus affected by the wind.
In the span of a moment, his mind became full and robust, filled by the force of the vital energy, like a wave swelling in water.
Then, as his eyes, mind, and vital force blossomed, his body shone like a lotus pond with half-opened lotuses when the sun has just begun to rise.
At that moment, the Lord said, 'Awaken!'—and as soon as he was awakened, the priest arose, like thunder resounding in the sky.
With eyes fully open, his mind restored, and memory abundant, the Lord of the three worlds spoke to him, as the ancient one once spoke to the lotus-born.
O noble one, remember the great Lakshmi as your own, and recall your true form; why do you bring the body to rest prematurely, without cause?
For you, who are free from notions of acceptance and rejection, what purpose remains in bodily states or their absence? Arise now.
You must remain in this body for as long as an age endures; for we, O blameless one, know the true order of destiny.
As a liberated being living here, you should remain in the kingdom; this body, now free from agitation, must be maintained until the end of the age.
When this body is worn out at the end of the age, O sinless one, you shall abide in your own glory, as space remains in a broken pot, merged with the sky.
This body of yours, pure and enduring until the end of the age, perceiving all worlds, has become the play of a liberated life.
The twelve suns have not risen, the mountains have not dissolved, the world is not ablaze—O noble one, why do you abandon the body in vain?
The wind is not madly blowing, turning the three worlds to ashes and dust, nor are the skull-marked directions unsteady—why do you abandon the body in vain?
Like the fresh shoots of the ashoka tree, or the lightning in the whorls of lotuses, nothing stirs in the sphere of the world—why do you abandon the body in vain?
The mountain peaks scorched by torrents of fire do not shatter the quarters—why do you abandon the body in vain?
This world, with all that is called Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra, remains, aged and clouded—why do you abandon the body in vain?
The clouds of the aeon do not thunder in the sky with the dreadful crash of splitting great mountains—why do you abandon the body in vain?
I, the banner of the birds, roam in all directions among worlds filled with beings—do not despise the body.
