The slayer of enemies, having ended his autumnal sleep for the sake of the gods, once contemplated with his mind the state of the world.
He observed heaven and earth with his own mind, and swiftly reached the realm of the underworld, ruled by the enemies.
There, seeing Prahlāda the demon established in steady meditation, and the city of the enemy of gods grown in power,
Within the body of the one who lies upon the serpent-bed in the ocean of milk, whose hands hold the conch, discus, and mace,
Seated upon the lotus seat, with a mind and body exceedingly radiant, he contemplated this: the great lotus of the three worlds.
When Prahlada, weary from his journey, descended into the netherworld, this creation became troubled, and has nearly lost its demonic nature.
With the absence of demons, the host of gods has taken a stance of conquest; soon, like a river disappearing beneath unseen waves, tranquility will come.
Then, having reached the state called liberation, free from duality, it will attain that ultimate place; with pride diminished and vitality faded, like a vine dried up.
When the multitude of gods attains peace, all rites of sacrifice and austerity on earth, whose fruits are undivine, will certainly come to rest.
When actions have subsided, the earthly realm will sink away; then, only the residue of meaning, untouched by worldly involvement, will remain.
All three worlds, which I have fashioned until the end of the aeon, will dissolve prematurely, like a drop of frost melting in heat.
When this appearance dissolves and perishes, whatever I have done here becomes the play of my own self, which brings about its own cessation.
Then, in this emptiness where moon, sun, and stars are lost, I too will attain tranquility of form and abide in that supreme state.
Just so, when the world has come to complete stillness, I do not see any benefit here; let the demons live, I think.
Because of the disturbance from the Daityas, the gods then perform sacrifices, austerities, and rites; thus the cycle of worldly existence is maintained, otherwise the course of the world would be different.
Therefore, I will go down to the netherworld and properly establish the lord of the Daityas in his own order, just as the season restores the tree.
But if, apart from Prahlāda, I appoint another lord of the Daityas, I think he will destroy the gods.
This is Prahlāda’s last and most purifying body; with this body, he must remain here until the end of the age.
For such is the divine decree, the supreme ordinance: Prahlāda, embodied, must remain here as long as the age lasts.
Therefore, I will quickly go to that lord of the Daityas and awaken him, like a cloud rousing a peacock sleeping in a mountain cave.
Let him, established in the samādhi of the liberated while living, assume lordship over the demons, like a jewel, free of attachment, produces reflections.
This creation does not perish, remaining thus together with the gods and demons; and it will not be without duality—such is my play.
Even though the rise and fall of creation are both pleasing to me, let it remain as it is; what concern is it of mine if it is otherwise?
That which is equal in existence and non-existence, whether in destruction or in persistence—any effort made out of ignorance is like striking at the sky.
Therefore, I go to the netherworld, awaken the lord of the demons, establish steadiness in the world, and accomplish my play.
Having reached the city of the demons, fierce with unruly conduct, like the sun awakening the lotus, I rouse the demon; I bring stability to the entire world, as the rain-clouds settle upon the restless mountain.
Thus reflecting, O Rama, the all-pervading one moved from the ocean of milk, together with his retinue, like a mountain with clouds.
Through a fissure in the ocean of milk, with the waters held back, he reached the city of Prahlada, as if arriving at another realm of Indra.
Hari saw the demon seated within a treasury of golden palaces, hidden like the lotus-born in a mountain cave, absorbed in meditation.
There, the Daityas were shaken by the radiance of Vishnu and fled far away, like cranes startled by the rays of the sun.
