With you established, and myself abiding in the self free from desire, with all coloring of passion gone—where are relatives, where are calamities, where are riches, where are birth and death? Where do I attain eternal peace?
Thus contemplating, Prahlada, the conqueror of enemies, attained the absorption of supreme bliss, free from all distinctions.
Established in the undifferentiated samadhi, he shone unmoving like a painted image, as if he had emerged from a mountain, abiding in his own state.
As he remained thus, a long time passed for him, dwelling in his own home in the world, like the enemy of the gods on Mount Meru.
Even when awakened by the lords of the demons, the great-minded one did not awaken; like a sprout that does not emerge from the seed-pod before its time, even though many seasons pass.
For five thousand years, strong-bodied and single-minded, he remained calm in the city of the demons, like a stone in a raging ocean.
Transformed by the exclusive state of supreme bliss, he reached a condition that seemed devoid of joy and appearance, as if it were a place of mere semblance.
In that span of time, the realm of Rasatala became leaderless, harshly afflicted by the law of the stronger prevailing over the weaker.
When Hiranyakashipu perished and his son remained in samadhi, no other king arose in the abode of the descendants of Danu.
Though the leaders of the demons sought him with great effort, Prahlada, absorbed in samadhi, did not awaken.
The enemies of the gods did not attain their flourishing lord there, just as a house at night does not obtain the lotus, whose petals shine with a network of radiance.
The wind of consciousness did not stir within him, who was devoid of awareness, just as human activity ceases on earth when the sun has set.
Then, as the demons became anxious and scattered in all directions, they wandered as they pleased in city after city, with no king to rule.
The realm of the underworld became leaderless, overturned by the law of the stronger devouring the weaker, and the order of virtues had set.
The city of the demons was consumed by the powerful, devoid of boundaries and order, filled with women everywhere, and the demons destroyed each other.
It was filled with harsh cries and wailing, with ruined neighborhoods, gardens and cities plundered, and afflicted by endless calamities.
The hosts of demons were overwhelmed by anxiety, without food, fruit, or kin, helpless before sudden disasters, and their leaders' faces were cast down in despair.
Defeated by the offspring of the gods, overrun by other beings, emptied of its own inhabitants, devoid of fortune, its chambers nearly desolate.
Intoxicated by unrestrained pursuit of women, engaged in chaotic battles, robbed of wealth and wives from all sides; resembling the monstrous belly of the Kali age, that realm of demons became tumultuous.
Then Hari, the god who governs the order of the entire world, seated upon the bed of Śeṣa in the city of the milk ocean,
The slayer of enemies, having ended his autumnal sleep for the sake of the gods, once contemplated with his mind the state of the world.
He observed heaven and earth with his own mind, and swiftly reached the realm of the underworld, ruled by the enemies.
There, seeing Prahlāda the demon established in steady meditation, and the city of the enemy of gods grown in power,
Within the body of the one who lies upon the serpent-bed in the ocean of milk, whose hands hold the conch, discus, and mace,
Seated upon the lotus seat, with a mind and body exceedingly radiant, he contemplated this: the great lotus of the three worlds.
When Prahlada, weary from his journey, descended into the netherworld, this creation became troubled, and has nearly lost its demonic nature.
With the absence of demons, the host of gods has taken a stance of conquest; soon, like a river disappearing beneath unseen waves, tranquility will come.
Then, having reached the state called liberation, free from duality, it will attain that ultimate place; with pride diminished and vitality faded, like a vine dried up.
When the multitude of gods attains peace, all rites of sacrifice and austerity on earth, whose fruits are undivine, will certainly come to rest.
When actions have subsided, the earthly realm will sink away; then, only the residue of meaning, untouched by worldly involvement, will remain.
