Then I shall again worship that great Lord, with an external worship, grand and adorned with many jewels—
Thinking 'I am Prahlada,' he worshipped Madhava, the lotus-born, in his mind, with a weighty abundance of offerings—
With rows of jewel-encrusted offering vessels, ointments like sandalwood and others, with various incense and lamps, and ornaments of manifold splendor—
With garlands of mandara flowers, clusters of golden lotuses, tall vines of wish-fulfilling trees, and circles of jewel-encrusted pillars—
With leaves from divine trees, garlands of various flowers, with kinkirata, buka, kunda, champaka, and blue lotus blossoms—
With kalhāra, kumuda, kāśa, kharjūra, mango, kiṃśuka, aśoka, madana, bilva, karṇikāra, and kirātaka trees,
With kadamba, kukura, nīpa, sindhuvāra, and yūthika, pāribhadra, guggulu, vidula, and abundant kuyyaka trees,
With priyangu, paṭala, pāṭa, pāṭala, dhātupāṭala, mango, āmrātaka, splendid harītaki and vibhītaka trees,
With the flowering vines and tender buds of sāla, tāla, and tamāla trees, and with the delicate clusters of sahakāra and kuṅkuma,
With ketaka, saptaparṇa, and likewise with clusters of eramañjarī, with the varied pālīvaṭa and many other splendid trees,
With enchanting aruka, and groups of mālatī and mādhavī, with fresh clusters of śephālika, and golden, delightful flowers,
With foods to eat, foods to enjoy, drinks, things to lick and sip, smooth delicacies, juices, fruits, and leaves of many delicious kinds,
With garments, beds, vehicles of great value adorned with gold, with songs, dances, and music performed by excellent entertainers,
With the enjoyment of gardens and parks, with the offering of all wealth, with all tokens of beauty, and even by offering himself—
Prahlada, within his inner palace, worshipped Hari, the Lord, with supreme devotion, with a mind filled by the grandeur of the world.
Then, in that temple of the gods, the lord of the Daityas worshipped Janardana with worship that was complete in all external offerings.
With those visible, external acts, again and again, in due order, the Daitya worshipped the Supreme Lord and became content.
From that time onward, Prahlada continued to worship the Supreme Lord every day, in the same way, with full devotion.
Then, from that time, all the Daityas in that city became Vaishnavas; for the king is the cause of conduct.
The news reached the sky, the world of the gods, and even Hari: 'The Daityas, abandoning hatred of Vishnu, have become devotees.'
The gods—Indra and the hosts of Maruts—were astonished: 'How is it, O Raghava, that the Daityas have embraced Vaishnava devotion?'
The gods, astonished, left the sky and went to the ocean of milk, where Vishnu, the wielder of valor, was reclining upon the serpent.
There, they recounted to him the tale of the demons and, filled with wonder at the unprecedented marvel, questioned him as he sat.
O Lord, who are those demons who have always been your adversaries? It appears that they have now become one with you—could this be your illusion at play?
How is it that those exceedingly wicked Dānavas, who shattered mountains, have attained devotion to Janārdana, which is rarely gained even after many great births?
O Lord, this story—that a common being is born virtuous—seems like a flower out of season: pleasing, yet also perplexing.
For, whatever is not appropriate in a given context does not shine there, just as a precious gem does not stand out among a heap of glass beads.
Every creature attains the state that matches its own qualities; even among similar beings, a dog never delights in what is unsuitable to its nature.
Just as diamond needles do not cause such pain when piercing the body, so too, perceptions of things that are discordant bring greater distress.
Whatever arises in its proper place, fitting and blameless, shines there—like a lotus in water, not on land.
