Assuming the form of Narasiṃha, Mādhava slew the great demon, roaring loudly like an elephant trumpeting beside a horse.
With the fire of his gaze, he burned the demon city, along with all its beings, like a blazing fire consuming the world at the end of an age.
In that lion-man wind, when great agitation arose, it thundered with resounding crashes, like a single ocean in turmoil.
Then the hosts of demons fled in all directions like gnats, and, like lamps whose light has gone out, they became invisible.
Then, with the demon king fleeing and the inner quarters burned, the netherworld became like the world destroyed at the end of an age.
When the lord, the cause of the end of the age, was gradually pacified, and had gone somewhere, those who had survived the tumult of the gods found relief.
The daughters of Danu who survived, protected by Prahlada, returned to their own land, now burned, like birds returning to a dried-up lake.
There, after lamenting their own destruction as was fitting for the time, they performed the proper funeral rites for their lords and kin.
Their people, bereft of captives, their circle of relatives and friends consumed, they slowly consoled the survivors among their own.
Their forms, marked by the signs of sorrow and dejection, were helpless, their hopes withered like lotuses struck by frost; the leaders of the demons, their minds scorched by grief, were like burned trees, their splendor gone.
Then Prahlada, his heart afflicted by sorrow, his demons slain by Hari, sat in silence in a cavern of the netherworld and began to reflect.
What means is there for us, when here, any sprout of the demons that arises is devoured by the lion, the branch-eater, as soon as it grows sharp?
Never in the netherworld have the mighty-armed demons, though they arise, remained firm—like lotuses on a snowy mountain.
Brilliant forms, roaring forth and vanishing again and again, arise and perish in an instant, like waves upon the ocean.
Enemies, both external and internal, have grown powerful, bringing unprecedented clouds of darkness that rob all light.
Friends, their hearts filled with darkness and their splendor diminished, have become weary, like lotus ponds at night with their petals withdrawn.
The realm of the senses has been overrun by gods, who sweep away the filth of confusion, just as wild animals invade a great forest.
Relatives, dispirited, destitute of effort and fortune, with their intentions laid bare, do not shine—like lotuses with scorched petals.
In the houses of demon warriors, clouds of ash swirl ceaselessly on restless winds, like the thick smoke of incense.
Within the inner chambers of the demons, whose doors have been broken open, a new radiance has arisen, like the tender shoots of barley or the glow of emerald.
Even the mighty demons, intoxicated like elephants in the lotus pond of the three worlds, have fallen into dejection like the gods—ah, what is impossible for fate!
Even the slightest movement of a leaf causes those who have seen the terror of enemies to tremble; the brides, scattered and fearful, are like wild creatures that have entered a village.
The trees, whose blossoming jewels and clusters were once ornaments for the ears of demons, now stand motionless, their fierce lion-like forms subdued.
The wish-fulfilling trees in Nandana, adorned with divine garments of leaves and jeweled clusters as teeth, have again been restored there.
Once, the faces of celestial captives were gazed upon by demons in the city; now, today, the faces of demon captives are gazed upon by the gods.
I think the great rivers of charity, flowing along the ramparts of the gods, will now become streams upon the mountain slopes, like rivers.
On our elephant cheeks, the ashes of forest fires shine, just as dust glimmers on the dry sands of the desert.
The gentle breezes, redolent with the pollen of blossoming mandara flowers, have now become rare upon the peaks of Meru, inaccessible to demons.
The beautiful celestial women, who had been confined within the inner chambers of the demons, have now returned to dwell on Meru, like creepers upon trees.
Alas, the pleasures of the celestial women, now devoid of vitality and delight, are ridiculed in jest by the heavenly nymphs.
