When Badi awoke, that city shone greatly, just as a lake of lotuses shines when the multitude of suns created by Brahma rises.
As soon as Badi awoke, and before the Danavas arrived, he reflected for a moment in the seat of meditation.
Ah, truly delightful is this path, cool and ultimate; having stood in it for a moment, I have attained supreme rest.
Therefore, relying on this very path, I shall dwell; what use have I for external powers enjoyed by you all?
Even in the shining orbs of Indra, waves of joy do not satisfy me as much as the states of inner consciousness do.
Thus, once again seeking rest, his mind dissolved; the demons blocked him like clouds obscuring the moon.
Seeing them, he pondered again, his gaze unsettled by their reverence; his form surrounded by those resembling mountain peaks.
For one whose mind is free from wavering, what is there to be gained? Let the mind, having been subdued, enter its own essence—enough.
I desire liberation—why? By whom was I bound before? Being unbound, I desire liberation; what childish mockery is this?
There is no bondage, nor liberation; my ignorance has come to an end. What use is the play of meditation to me, or what would study bring?
I desire neither meditation nor study, neither enjoyment nor abstinence; I remain equanimous, free from affliction.
I have no desire for ultimate truth, nor for the world's existence; I have nothing to do with meditative vision, nor with prosperity.
I am neither dead nor alive, neither existent nor non-existent—I am equal. This is not mine, nor is anything else; salutations to myself, for I am indeed myself.
Let this world-kingdom be; I remain here established in myself. Or let there not be a world-kingdom; I abide coolly in my own self.
What purpose is served for me by meditation or by the splendor of royal wealth? Let whatever comes, come; I am nothing, and nothing belongs to me anywhere.
There is nothing at all that must be done by me now; so why should I not perform some ordinary action here?
Thus resolved, Baḍi, the best among the strong, with a fulfilled self, gazed upon the demons like the sun upon lotuses.
By the distinction of his glance, he received the head-bows of all the demon-born, as the wind receives the fragrance of flowers.
Then Vairocani, there, with a mind relinquished through meditation, accomplished all royal duties solely by thought.
He honored the gods, the twice-born, and the teachers with worship, and showed respect to friends, relatives, vassals, and virtuous people.
He satisfied servants and groups of petitioners with wealth, and cherished women with offerings of various riches.
Thus he resided in that kingdom, ruling over all; then, at some time, his mind turned toward performing a sacrifice.
He performed a great sacrifice, satisfying all the worlds, honored by hosts of gods and sages, together with the chief ones like Shukra.
Baḍi, desiring an abundance of enjoyments, was judged by Mādhava as unworthy; yet, for the fulfillment of Baḍi’s wish, the bestower of success went to that sacrifice.
This portion of the world, like a jungle, meant only for enjoyment, should be given to Śakra, who is worthy, elder in age, and skilled in action.
By the mere pretense of following procedure, Hari deceived Baḍi there, and bound him in the netherworld, as one would bind a monkey in a house.
Now, O Rāma, he remains established for the sake of regaining Indrahood, with the body of a liberated being, at peace, ever absorbed in meditation.
Dwelling in a cave of the netherworld, Baḍi, with the mind of a liberated one, perceives adversity and prosperity with equal vision, at the appointed time.
His awareness neither sets nor rises in happiness or sorrow; it remains steady and unwavering, like a row of painted suns.
Thousands of manifestations and disappearances occur here among living beings; having observed this deeply, their mind becomes detached from pleasures.
