भोगान् प्रति विरक्तो ऽस्मि महासम्मोहदायिनः । तत्त्वं विज्ञातुम् इच्छामि महासम्मोहहारि यत्
I am dispassionate toward enjoyments, which bring great delusion; I wish to know the truth that destroys this great delusion.
किम् इहास्ति कियन्मात्रम् इदं किम्मयम् एव वा । को ऽहं कस् त्वं किम् एते वा लोका इति वदाशु मे
What exists here? How much is this? Of what is it made? Who am I? Who are you? What are these worlds? Quickly tell me.
बहुनात्र किम् उक्तेन खं गन्तुं यत्नवान् अहम् । सर्वं दानवराजेन्द्र सारं सङ्क्षेपतश् शृणु
Why say much here? I am intent on reaching the sky. Hear, O king of Dānavas, the essence of everything in brief.
चिद् इहास्ति हि चिन्मात्रम् इदं चिन्मयम् एव च । चित् त्वं चिद् अहम् एते च लोकाश् चिद् इति सङ्ग्रहः
Consciousness alone exists here; this is pure consciousness indeed. You are consciousness, I am consciousness, and all these worlds are consciousness—this is the summary.
चितं निश्चयम् आदाय विलोकय धियेद्धया । स्वयम् एवात्मनात्मानम् अनन्तं पदम् आप्स्यसि
Grasping this certainty with a clear mind, observe with intelligence; by yourself, through yourself, you will attain the infinite state.
भव्यो ऽसि चेत् तद् एतस्मात् सर्वम् आप्नोषि निश्चयात् । नो चेत् तद् बह्व् अपि प्रोक्तं त्वयि भस्मनि हूयते
If you are receptive, then by this certainty you attain everything; if not, then however much is said is like offering into ashes.
चिच्चेत्यकलना बन्धस् तन्मुक्तिर् मुक्तिर् उच्यते । चिद् अचेत्या किलात्मेति सर्वसिद्धान्तसङ्ग्रहः
The conception of subject and object is bondage; its absence is called liberation. Consciousness without objectification is truly the Self—this is the essence of all doctrines.
एतं निश्चयम् आदाय विलोकय धियेद्धया । स्वयम् एवात्मनात्मानम् अनन्तं पदम् आप्स्यसि
Taking up this certainty, observe with a clear mind; by yourself, through yourself, you will attain the infinite state.
खं व्रजाम्य् अहम् अत्रैते मुनयस् सप्त सङ्गताः । केनापि सुरकार्येण वर्तव्यं तत्र खे मया
I am going to the sky; here these seven sages have gathered. For some divine purpose, I must remain there in the sky.
राजन् यावद् अयं देहस् तावन् मुक्तधियाम् अपि । यथाप्राप्तार्थसन्त्यागो रोचते न स्वभावतः
O King, as long as this body remains, even for those whose minds are liberated, the abandonment of acquired things is agreeable only as it occurs, not by nature.
इति कथितवताथ भार्गवेण स्फुटजलराशिपथे महाजवेन । प्लुतम् अलिशबले नभोऽन्तराले तरलतरङ्गवद् आकुले ग्रहौघैः
Thus, having spoken, Bhārgava, with great speed, traversed the clear path of the waters, leaping into the sky amidst a swarm of bees, in the midst of the heavens, agitated like waves by the multitude of planets.
सुरासुरसभापूज्ये तस्मिन् भृगुसुते गते । मनसा चिन्तयाम् आस बडिर् बलवतां वरः
When the son of Bhrigu, honored in the assemblies of gods and demons, had departed, Baḍi, foremost among the strong, began to reflect in his mind.
युक्तम् उक्तं भगवता चिद् एवेदं जगत्त्रयम् । चिद् अहं चिद् इमे लोकाश् चिद् आशा चिद् इयं क्रिया
What the venerable one has said is fitting: this entire threefold world is indeed consciousness; I am consciousness, these worlds are consciousness, space is consciousness, and this activity is consciousness.
सबाह्याभ्यन्तरं सर्वं चिद् एव परमार्थतः । अस्ति चिद्व्यतिरेकेण नेह किञ्चन कुत्रचित्
All, both within and without, is truly nothing but consciousness; apart from consciousness, there is nothing whatsoever anywhere here.
अयम् आदित्य इत्य् अर्को न चिता चेत्यते यदि । तद् अर्कतमसोर् भेदः क इवेहोपलभ्यते
If the sun is not recognized as consciousness when one says, 'This is the sun,' then what distinction between sun and darkness can be perceived here?
इयं भूर् इति भूर् एषा चिता यदि न चेत्यते । भूमेः किं नाम भूमित्वं तद् भवेद् भव्यतां गतम्
If this earth is not recognized as consciousness when one says, 'This is the earth,' then what is the essence of earth's earth-ness? It would have lost its very being.
इमा दिशो दिश इति चेत्यन्ते न चिता यदि । तत् किं नाम दिशां दिक्त्वं शैलानां वापि काद्रिता
If these directions are not recognized as consciousness when one says, 'These are the directions,' then what is the nature of direction for the directions, or mountain-ness for the mountains?
इदं जगद् इति जगच् चिता यदि न चेत्यते । तत् किं जगत्त्वं जगतो नभस्त्वं नभसो ऽथ किम्
If this world is not recognized as consciousness when one says, 'This is the world,' then what is the world's world-ness, or the sky's sky-ness?
कायो ऽयं पर्वताकारश् चिता यदि न चेत्यते । तत् किं नाम शरीरत्वं शरीरस्य शरीरिणाम्
If this body, having the form of a mountain, is not recognized as consciousness, then what is the body-ness of the body, or of embodied beings?
चिद् इन्द्रियाणि चित् कायश् चिन् मनश् चित् तदेषणा । चिद् अन्तश् चिद् बहिश् चित् खं चिद् भावश् चिद् भवस्थितिः
Consciousness is the senses, consciousness is the body, consciousness is the mind, and consciousness is its desire; consciousness is within, consciousness is without, consciousness is space, consciousness is existence, and consciousness is the state of being.
चिद् एवैकम् अहं सर्वं स्पर्शनैषणपूर्वकम् । करोमि मात्रासंस्पर्शं शरीरेण न किञ्चन
I alone am consciousness, the one reality, and all this—engaged in contact and desire; yet, with the body, I do nothing, for I am untouched by any measure of contact.
किम् अनेन शरीरेण काष्ठलोष्टसमेन मे । अशेषजगदेकात्मा चिद् अहं चेतनात्मकः
What use is this body to me, which is like wood or a clod of earth? I am consciousness, the one self of the entire world, endowed with awareness.
अहं चिद् अम्बरे भानाव् अहं चिद् भूतपञ्जरे । सुरासुरेषु चिद् अहं स्थावरेषु चरेषु च
I am consciousness in the sky, I am consciousness in the sun, I am consciousness in the cage of elements; I am consciousness among gods and demons, and among the unmoving and the moving.
चिद् अस्तीह द्वितीया हि कल्पनैव न विद्यते । द्वित्वस्यासम्भवाल् लोके कश् शत्रुः कश् च वा सुहृत्
Here, only consciousness exists; a second (other) is merely imagined and does not truly exist. Since duality is impossible in this world, who is an enemy and who is a friend?
बडिनाम्नश् शरीरस्य च्छिन्ने शिरसि भासुरे । चितस् तत् किं भवेच् छिन्नं सर्वलोकावपूरणात्
If the head of the body called Baḍi is cut off and shines, what of consciousness? Can it be cut, when it pervades all worlds?
चिता सञ्चेतितो द्वेषो द्वेषो भवति नान्यथा । तस्माद् द्वेषादयस् सर्वे भावाभावाश् चिदात्मकाः
Hatred arises only when gathered by consciousness; otherwise, there is no hatred. Therefore, all states such as hatred and its absence are of the nature of consciousness.
न चितो व्यतिरेकेण प्रविचार्यापि किञ्चन । अन्यद् आसाद्यते स्फाराद् अस्मात् त्रिभुवनोदरात्
Apart from consciousness, even upon thorough investigation, nothing else is found—nothing else arises from this vast expanse within the three worlds.
न द्वेषो ऽस्ति न रागो ऽस्ति न मनो नास्य वृत्तयः । चिन्मात्रस्यातिशुद्धस्य विकल्पकलना कुतः
There is no aversion, no attachment, no mind, nor its activities; for the pure consciousness alone, how could there be any fabrication or conceptualization?
चिद् अहं सर्वगो व्यापी नित्यानन्दमयात्मकः । विकल्पकलनातीतो विकल्पांशविवर्जितः
I am consciousness, all-pervading, expansive, whose nature is eternal bliss; beyond all conceptualization, free from every fragment of imagination.
चितश् चिद् इति यन् नाम निर्नामाया न नाम तत् । शब्दात्मिकैषा चिच्छक्तिः परिस्फुरति सर्वगा
The terms 'consciousness' or 'the knower' are not names for the nameless; this power of consciousness, made of sound, shines forth everywhere.
