Once, I was pleased by the embrace of limbs with limbs, and flesh with flesh, with a woman; but that was only the display of delusion.
All experiences have been seen, all enjoyments have been enjoyed intact; the entire world of beings has been traversed—what, then, is truly delightful?
Again and again, here and elsewhere, it is the same things, the same objects, from this place to that—there is nothing that is truly new.
Having abandoned everything, having renounced all by my own understanding, I remain pure, full in myself, like the ocean in its own being.
In the netherworld, on earth, in heaven—women, jewels, and so on—even their essence is quickly swallowed up by time, which is trivial.
For so long in the past, I was truly childish—harboring aversion toward the immortals, driven by a petty desire for the world.
By mere mental construction, the world is called great; but whether one renounces or enjoys it, what purpose is served for the noble-minded?
Alas, for a very long time, I, deluded by the pursuit of external gain, have courted misfortune like a foolish child intoxicated by ignorance and pride, just as a dog does.
What is there in these three worlds that I, driven by swiftly flickering desires and ignorance, have not done, only to increase my later regret?
Enough now of this worthless brooding over the past; true effort bears fruit through present remedies.
Today, by realizing the oneness of the boundless Self as both cause and effect, I attain happiness everywhere, like an elixir in the ocean.
Who, then, am I? What is meant by 'Self'? To discern the Self, I shall certainly ask the sage Ushanas, O Lord, for the removal of ignorance.
I quickly contemplate the supreme Lord, Shukra, who is full of grace; then, instructed by his words, I abide in the infinite abundance of the Self, and the teachings bear fruit within me.
Thus reflecting, the venerable Bhrigu, with eyes closed, meditated upon Shukra, whose eyes are like lotus petals, the one who dwells in the sky.
Then the sage Bhargava, absorbed in constant meditation on the infinite, conscious essence present everywhere, came to know his disciple Bhrigu, who was seeking a teacher, as he was contemplating.
Then the all-pervading, infinite, conscious Self, the lord Bhargava, brought his body, the jewel-adorned mansion, to Baḍi.
Baḍi, whose body was touched by the radiance of the guru’s form, awakened like a lotus stirred by the sun’s rays at dawn.
There, by offering precious gifts and heaps of mandāra flowers, and by reverently bowing at his feet, he worshipped Bhārgava.
With his limbs adorned with jewels, crowned with mandāra blossoms, and seated on a most precious seat, Baḍi then addressed his guru.
Blessed one, by your grace, this insight arises before you, urging me to speak, as the sun’s rays prompt action.
I am dispassionate toward enjoyments, which bring great delusion; I wish to know the truth that destroys this great delusion.
What exists here? How much is this? Of what is it made? Who am I? Who are you? What are these worlds? Quickly tell me.
Why say much here? I am intent on reaching the sky. Hear, O king of Dānavas, the essence of everything in brief.
Consciousness alone exists here; this is pure consciousness indeed. You are consciousness, I am consciousness, and all these worlds are consciousness—this is the summary.
Grasping this certainty with a clear mind, observe with intelligence; by yourself, through yourself, you will attain the infinite state.
If you are receptive, then by this certainty you attain everything; if not, then however much is said is like offering into ashes.
The conception of subject and object is bondage; its absence is called liberation. Consciousness without objectification is truly the Self—this is the essence of all doctrines.
Taking up this certainty, observe with a clear mind; by yourself, through yourself, you will attain the infinite state.
I am going to the sky; here these seven sages have gathered. For some divine purpose, I must remain there in the sky.
O King, as long as this body remains, even for those whose minds are liberated, the abandonment of acquired things is agreeable only as it occurs, not by nature.
