Just as water rises in waves and then becomes still again, so too people move from one action to another.
This repeated activity, resembling the behavior of the insane, makes the wise laugh again and again, as at the play of children.
Even when all tasks are completed by such constant action, what is truly gained, so that one would not return to action again?
For how long must we continue this great display here, until we have accomplished whatever is to be attained?
This endless child's play is, in reality, devoid of substance; it is repeated in vain by those who seek the birth of what is worthless.
I do not see here any one great and noble result; there is only some other task to be done, in which truly there is nothing at all.
Apart from enjoyment, what could there be that is utterly delightful and imperishable? Reflecting thus, Baḍiḥ quickly pondered and decided.
Then the lord of the asuras spoke, recalling in an instant, pondering the matter in his own mind with furrowed brow.
Long ago, it is said, the venerable Virocana, my father—knower of the Self, who had seen the world’s true nature—was questioned here.
O greatly wise one, where is that ultimate boundary in which all sorrows and joys are stilled, and all delusions are pacified? Tell me of that limit.
Where does the mind’s confusion find peace? Where have all desires truly ceased? Father, where is that place of rest without end or interruption?
What, when attained among all attainments here, brings a person true contentment? What, once seen, leaves no further longing for any other vision?
Even though these enjoyments are exceedingly many, they do not bring happiness; they disturb the mind with delusion and cause even the virtuous to fall.
Therefore, Father, tell me of that which is truly beautiful and filled with boundless bliss, where, abiding there, I may find lasting repose.
Having heard this, beneath a canopy woven of flowers shining with a radiance rivaling the moon’s rays, in the courtyard of the ocean-borne tree planted by my father who had won heaven, he spoke words equal to the nectar of immortality, for the pacification of delusion.
There is, O son, a vast region, expansive and cavernous, where thousands of worlds are believed to exist.
There, there are no clouds, nor oceans, nor mountains; no forests, no sacred places, no rivers, nor lakes.
There is no earth, nor sky, nor heaven, nor wind and the like; no moon or sun, no lords of worlds, no gods, nor demons.
There are no spirits, yakṣas, or rākṣasas, no thickets, nor forest beauty; no trees, grasses, beings—neither immobile nor mobile.
There is no water, no fire, no directions, neither above nor below, nor any region; no world, no darkness, neither I, nor Hari, Indra, Hara, and others.
There exists only one, supremely great king of immense splendor, who is the doer of all, present everywhere, everything, and yet remains silent.
By his will, a minister is conceived, ever intent on all deliberations; he swiftly accomplishes the impossible and effortlessly undoes the possible.
He cannot enjoy anything, nor does he know anything; yet, though ignorant, he always does everything solely for the king.
He alone is the sole doer of all actions for that king; the king remains quietly established in himself, apart.
Who is that land, radiant and free from affliction and disease? How is it attained, or by whom has it been reached, O Lord?
Who is that kind of minister, or king of great strength, who, even with the tangled webs of the world tossed about playfully, has not been conquered by us?
This account is unprecedented, bestowing fearlessness upon me; by telling it, dispel for me the cloud of doubt in the sky of my heart.
There, the minister is the Blessed One, son of the hosts of gods and demons; even when united with hundreds of thousands, he is not overcome in the least.
He is not Indra with a thousand eyes, nor Yama, nor the lord of wealth; he is neither mortal nor demon, nor, my child, is he ever defeated.
There, swords, maces, spears, thunderbolts, discs, clubs, and other weapons become blunt, like lotus blows upon stone.
