By freedom from expectation, the mind attains fullness; following after desire, the mind becomes empty, like a lake in autumn.
The heart becomes empty, its cavity revealed, like the ocean drained by Agastya, in those whose minds are helplessly bound by hope.
In whose vast mind-tree the restless monkey of craving does not leap, for such a person the inner forest of the heart shines greatly.
For those whose minds are free from craving, the lotus-eye's orb, the three worlds, a league of miles, and a half-blink, or a great aeon, are like a cow's hoofprint.
That coolness found in desireless minds is not in the moon, nor in the caves of the snowy mountain, nor in groves of plantain and sandalwood.
Neither the full moon, nor the full ocean of milk, nor the lovely face of Lakshmi shines as beautifully as the mind free from longing.
Just as a streak of cloud stains the moon, or ink mars a coating of nectar, so does the goblin of hope defile a person from within.
The branches called hope, stretching in all directions, belong to the tree of the mind; when these are cut, the great tree of the mind becomes formless.
When the great branch of craving is cut and the trunk of the mind stands firm, steadfastness takes on a hundred branches in the form of unity.
When the mind, through unsurpassed courage, comes to cessation, O Rama, that state is attained where there is no destruction.
If you do not allow these mental tendencies and desires to take root in your noble heart, then you truly exist, O Raghava.
When your mind, devoid of all modifications, reaches the state of no-mind, then you attain that inner existence which is of the nature of liberation.
When the mind, like a heron, is agitated within by thirst, inauspicious things quickly spread, O Raghava.
The activity of the mind is called its modification; the mind operates through intention. Therefore, abandoning the desire which is the mind’s modification, enter the state beyond mind.
Whoever lives by a certain mental modification perishes with it; therefore, for the pacification of the mind, one should bring about the cessation of that modification.
O great soul, having subdued all cravings and cast off the bondage of existence, with the mind freed, when the chains of desire that bind the mind have dissolved, who is not liberated among them?
Or, O moon that fills the sky named the Raghu lineage, obtain pure knowledge, like the ocean, through the discernment of intellect.
O Lord, knower of all dharmas, through your grace, all that is to be attained has been attained in my heart; I have found rest in the stainless state.
Just as clouds depart from the autumn sky, so, O mighty one, all the dense darkness of delusion has vanished from my mind.
Filled with nectar, pure, cool in spirit, and radiant, I remain inwardly blissful, like the full moon at dusk.
Though all clouds of doubt have cleared, like the autumn season, I do not find satisfaction in listening to your words.
Speak again, O Lord, for the growth of my understanding, about the attainment of supreme knowledge; the wise are not wearied by hearing of the highest.
Listen, Rāghava, I will tell you the excellent story of Baḍa; by hearing it, you will attain eternal understanding.
In some corner of this world's expanse, within a certain direction's boundary, there exists a realm beneath the earth, known as Pātāla.
At times, it shines with the nectar-waters born of the ocean of milk, and sometimes with the daughters of the Dānavas, its interior without any gaps.
In some places, it was filled with serpents whose tongues moved restlessly, bearing the heavy burden of venom as their weapon, with hundreds and thousands of hoods.
Elsewhere, it was crowded with the sons of Danu, who, with playful ease, shook the entire universe, appearing like moving mountains.
In some regions, it was occupied by elephants of the quarters, whose tusks resembled trees and mountains, resting at the summits of fort walls and earth's circles.
In some directions, it was filled with lines of beings scorched by the loud, harsh noise of great clattering, and resounded with circles of hellish men, foul-smelling and dreadful.
In some places, it was interwoven down to the earth with the seven regions of the underworld, and elsewhere, it was filled with oceans of jewels, as if with other netherworlds.
