भृग्वङ्गिरःपुलस्त्यादिमुनिनायकमण्डिता । च्यवनोद्दालकोशीरशरलोमादिपालिता
Adorned by leading sages such as Bhrigu, Angiras, and Pulastya, and protected by Cyavana, Uddālaka, Śīra, Śaralomā, and others.
परस्परपरामर्शाद् दुस्संस्थानमृगाजिना । लोलाक्षमालावलया सुकमण्डलुधारिणी
With deerskins in disarray from mutual contact, eyes restless, garlands and bracelets swaying, they easily bore their ritual circles.
तारावलिर् इवान्योऽन्यं कृतशोभातिशायिनी । कौसुमी वृष्टिर् अन्येव द्वितीयेवार्कमण्डली
Like a cluster of stars outshining one another in beauty, like a shower of flowers, like a second orb of the sun.
ताराजाल इवाम्भोदो व्यासो ह्य् अत्र व्यराजत । तारौघ इव शीतांशुर् नारदो ऽत्र व्यराजत
Like a network of stars in the sky, Vyāsa shone forth there; like a multitude of stars, Nārada shone forth there.
देवेष्व् इव सुराधीशः पुलस्त्यो ऽत्र व्यराजत । आदित्य इव देवानाम् अङ्गिराश् च व्यराजत
Like the lord of gods among the deities, Pulastya shone forth there; and like the sun among the gods, Angiras shone forth.
अथास्यां सिद्धसेनायां पतन्त्यां नभसो रसात् । उत्तस्थौ मुनिसम्पूर्णा तदा दाशरथी सभा
Then, as that assembly of perfected sages descended from the sky to earth, the hall of the son of Daśaratha, filled with sages, rose up.
मिश्रीभूता विरेजुस् ते नभश्चरमहीचराः । परस्परवृताङ्गाभा भासयन्तो दिशो दश
Those who moved in the sky and on earth, mingling together, shone brilliantly, their bodies entwined with one another, illuminating the ten directions.
वेणुघण्टावृतकरा लीलाकमलधारिणः । दूर्वाङ्कुराक्रान्तशिखास् सचूडामणिमूर्धजाः
With hands adorned by flutes and bells, holding playful lotuses, their hair crested with young blades of sacred grass and crowned with jeweled diadems.
जटाकटप्रकपिला मौलिमालितमस्तकाः । प्रकोष्ठगाक्षवलया माणिक्यवलयान्विताः
Their heads were adorned with matted locks, twisted into knots and crowned with Kapila’s hair; their arms were decorated with bracelets, some set with rubies.
चीरवल्कलसंवीतास् स्रक्कौशेयावगुण्ठिताः । विलोलमेखलापाशाश् चलन्मुक्ताकलापिनः
They were clothed in bark garments and loincloths, draped with silk garlands; their girdles swayed loosely, and strings of pearls moved as they walked.
वसिष्ठविश्वामित्रौ तान् पूजयाम् आसतुः क्षणात् । अर्घ्यैः पाद्यैर् वचोभिश् च नभश्चरमहागणान्
Vasiṣṭha and Viśvāmitra immediately honored those great beings who move through the heavens, offering them water for washing, water for their feet, and words of welcome.
सर्वाचारेण सिद्धौघं पूजयाम् आस भूपतिः । सिद्धौघो भूपतिं चैव कुशलप्रश्नवार्त्तया
The king worshipped the assembly of siddhas with all proper rites; and the siddhas, in turn, greeted the king with courteous inquiries and words of goodwill.
तैस् तैः प्रणयसंरम्भैर् अन्योऽन्यं प्राप्तसत्क्रियाः । उपाविशन् विष्टरेषु नभश्चरमहीचराः
With mutual affection and enthusiasm, each received proper hospitality from the other; the celestial and earthly sages took their seats on the arranged mats.
वचोभिः पुष्पवर्षेण साधुवादेन चाभितः । रामं तं पूजयाम् आसुः पुरः प्रणतम् आस्थितम्
With words, showers of flowers, and praises from all sides, they honored Rama, who sat before them with bowed head.
आसां चक्रे च तत्रासौ राजलक्ष्म्या विराजितः । विश्वामित्रो वसिष्ठश् च वामदेवश् च मन्त्रिणः
There, radiant with royal splendor, were Viśvāmitra, Vasiṣṭha, Vāmadeva, and the ministers, all assembled together.
नारदो देवपुत्रश् च व्यासश् च मुनिपुङ्गवः । मरीचिर् अथ दुर्वासा मुनिर् आङ्गिरसस् तथा
Nārada, son of the gods, Vyāsa, foremost among sages, Marīci, Durvāsā, and the sage Āṅgiras were also present.
क्रतुः पुलस्त्यः पुलहश् शरलोमा मुनीश्वरः । वात्स्यायनो भरद्वाजो वाल्मीकिर् मुनिपुङ्गवः
Kratu, Pulastya, Pulaha, Sharaloma the eminent sage, Vatsyayana, Bharadvaja, and Valmiki, the foremost among sages,
उद्दालक ऋचीकश् च शर्यातिश् च्यवनस् तथा । ऊष्मपाश् च घृतार्चिश् च शालुडिर् वालुडिस् तथा
Uddalaka, Richika, Sharyati, and likewise Cyavana; Ushmapa, Ghrtarci, Shaludi, and Valudi as well,
एते चान्ये च बहवो वेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः । ज्ञातज्ञेया महात्मानस् संस्थितास् तत्र नायकाः
These and many others, accomplished in the Vedas and their branches, who have known what is to be known, great souls, were present there as leaders.
वसिष्ठविश्वामित्राभ्यां सह ते नारदादयः । इदम् ऊचुर् अनूचाना रामम् आनमिताननम्
Along with Vasistha and Vishvamitra, those sages including Narada spoke these words, having studied, to Rama, whose face was radiant.
अहो वत कुमारेण कल्याणगुणशालिनी । वाग् उक्ता परमोदारविरागरसगर्भिणी
Ah, indeed, by the prince, words endowed with auspicious qualities have been spoken, filled with the essence of supreme nobility and detachment.
परिनिष्ठितवाक्यार्थसुबोधम् उचितं स्फुटम् । उदारं प्रियचर्यार्हम् अविह्वलम् अविप्लुतम्
The meaning of the statements is thoroughly established, clear, appropriate, and evident; noble, worthy of loving practice, unwavering and unconfused.
अभिव्यक्तपदस्पष्टम् इष्टं पुष्टं च तुष्टिमत् । करोति राघवप्रोक्तं वचः कस्य न विस्मयम्
Expressed with clear and distinct words, pleasing, nourishing, and satisfying; who would not be amazed by the speech spoken by Raghava?
शताद् एकतमस्यैव सर्वोदारचमत्कृतेः । ईप्सितार्थार्पणैकान्तदक्षा भवति भारती
Of a hundred, even one alone is capable of all noble wonder; Bharati becomes exclusively skilled in offering the desired meaning.
कुमार त्वां विना कस्य विवेकफलशालिनी । एवं विकासम् आयाति प्रज्ञावनलता नवा
O prince, without you, for whom does the young vine of wisdom, bearing the fruit of discernment, blossom in such a way?
प्रज्ञादीपशिखा यस्य रामस्येव हृदि स्थिता । प्रज्वलत्य् अलम् आलोककारिणी स पुमान् स्मृतः
He whose heart holds the flame-tip of wisdom, as it does in Rama, shines brightly, illuminating all; such a person is remembered.
रक्तमांसास्थियन्त्राणि बहून्य् अतिततानि च । पदार्थान् अपकर्षन्ति नास्ति तेषु सचेतनम्
The mechanisms of flesh, blood, and bone, and many things that have passed, draw objects toward themselves; but consciousness is not found in them.
जन्ममृत्युजरादुःखम् अनुयान्ति पुनः पुनः । विमृशन्ति न संसारं पशवः परिमोहिताः
Birth, death, old age, and suffering follow again and again; but the bewildered beasts do not reflect upon the cycle of existence.
कथञ्चित् क्वचिद् एवैको दृश्यते विमलाशयः । पूर्वापरविचारार्हो यथायम् अरिसूदनः
Only rarely and in some place is one seen whose mind is pure, capable of reflecting on both past and future, as is this slayer of enemies.
अनुत्तमचमत्कारफलास् सुभगमूर्तयः । भव्या हि विरला लोके सहकारद्रुमा इव
Forms that yield the supreme fruit of wonder and are auspicious are indeed rare in the world, like the sandalwood trees among other trees.
