He neither delights nor hates, neither grieves nor desires; established in silence, engaged in natural action, he does not sink in the ocean of worldly existence.
When questioned, he speaks appropriately; when not questioned, he remains like a pillar; free from both effort and non-effort, he does not sink in the ocean of worldly existence.
When prompted, he speaks what is agreeable to all, skillful in pleasant speech, and understanding the intentions of beings; he does not sink in the ocean of worldly existence.
He knows the ways of the world—those caught in proper and improper states, whose actions are hindered by hope—just as one knows the contents of a crow’s nest or a bilva fruit.
Having ascended to the supreme state, he observes the fragile condition of the world with a mind cooled within, as if smiling.
Those great souls who have conquered their minds and seen the highest and lowest realities—their nature, O Raghava, has thus been described to you.
But as for us, we do not know what is agreeable to speak for the ignorant, those whose minds are unconquered, and who are immersed in the mire of enjoyment.
Those women whom they desire, adorned with gestures and expressions, are but the flames of hellfire, though they shine with a golden radiance.
Objects pursued are dense with misfortune, and the pursuit of worthless aims brings only fruitless distress; these directions, filled with the tumult of suffering, are fraught with calamity.
Actions bound to results, composed of various customs, are filled with both pleasure and pain; we are unable to describe them fully.

Noble in conduct, behaving gracefully and conforming to all customs, yet inwardly having renounced everything, dwell in the world, O Raghava.
Having examined all states, whatever is found to be most insignificant, hold to that in your being and dwell in the world, O Raghava.
Within, holding to hopelessness, outwardly acting as if full of hope; outwardly heated, inwardly cool—dwell in the world, O Raghava.
Outwardly, act with deliberate effort, but within, remain free from agitation; be a doer in the world, yet inwardly not a doer—move about in the world, O Raghava.
You have understood the true inner nature of all states; with that vision, live in the world as you wish, O Raghava.

In truth, for the embodied one, there is neither bondage nor liberation; this transformation of worldly existence is a false display, like a magician’s illusion.
This world appears, O Raghava, as mere delusion born of ignorance—like water seen in a mirage under the intense sun, produced by a strong conviction.
How can there be bondage for the one self, which is unbound and of a single nature in all? And in the absence of that, for whom is liberation prescribed?
This worldly delusion arises from ignorance of reality; it comes to an end through knowledge of the truth, just as the mistaken idea of a snake in a rope disappears.
You have known your true nature by means of this subtle understanding; you have become free of ego—remain pure, like the sky.
If you are not that, then all notions of friends and relatives are to be abandoned; for what meaning can there be in imagining what is unreal?
If you are that, then you are inferred to be supremely existent; having attained this foremost state, you are supreme for this reason.
There is no connection of the Self with enjoyments, relatives, the world, or with actions, whether good or bad; why do you grieve over these?
