एतेषां प्रथमः प्रोतस् तृष्णया बन्धयोग्यया । शुद्धतृष्णास् त्रयस् स्वच्छा जीवन्मुक्ता विलासिनः
Among these, the first is strung with desire and fit for bondage; the other three, with pure desire, are clear and delight in the state of the liberated while living.
सर्वम् आत्माहम् एवेति निश्चयो यो महामते । तम् आदाय विषादाय न भूयो याति ते मतिः
O great-minded one, the conviction that 'all is truly myself'—when you hold to this, your mind does not again fall into sorrow.
तिर्यग् ऊर्ध्वम् अधस्ताच् च व्यापको महिमात्मनः । सर्वम् आत्मेति तेनान्तर् निश्चयेन न बध्यसे
The greatness of the self pervades everywhere—across, above, and below; with the conviction that all is the self, you are not bound within.
शून्यं प्रकृतिमाये च ब्रह्म विज्ञानम् इत्य् अपि । शिवः पुरुष ईशेति नित्यम् आत्मैव कथ्यते
Emptiness, nature, illusion, Brahman, knowledge, Shiva, person, Lord—all these are always spoken of as the self alone.
सदा सर्वं सद् एवेदं नेह द्वित्वान्यते क्वचित् । विद्यते विद्यया व्याप्तं जगन् नेतरयान्धया
Always, all this is truly one; nowhere here is there any duality or otherness; the world is pervaded by knowledge, not by blind ignorance.
आपातालम् अनन्तात्मा पूरितो ऽम्बुभिर् अम्बुधिः । आब्रह्मस्तम्बपर्यन्तं जगद् आपूर्णम् आत्मना
The ocean, whose essence is infinite, is filled with water down to the lowest depths; the universe, from Brahma to the smallest blade of grass, is completely pervaded by the Self.
ऋतं सर्वम् इदं नित्यं नानृतं विद्यते क्वचित् । वार्य् एव सकलो ऽम्भोधिर् न तरङ्गादयः पृथक्
All this is truth, eternal; nowhere does untruth exist. The entire ocean is only water—waves and the like are not separate from it.
पृथक् कटककेयूरनूपुरादि न काञ्चनात् । भिन्नास् तरुतृणाकारकोटयश् चैव नात्मनः
Bracelets, armlets, anklets, and so on are not distinct from gold; likewise, countless forms of trees and grasses are not separate from the Self.
द्वैताद्वैतसमुद्भेदैर् जगन्निर्माणलीलया । परमात्ममयी शक्तिर् अद्वैतैव विजृम्भते
Through the play of creation, with its divisions of duality and non-duality, the supreme power, composed of the Supreme Self, manifests as non-dual alone.
आत्मीये परकीये च सर्वस्मिन्न् एव सर्वदा । नष्टे वोपचिते कार्ये सुखदुःखे गृहाण मा
In what is one's own and what is another's, in everything and always, whether something is lost or gained, in pleasure and pain—do not grasp or reject.
भावाद्वैतम् उपाश्रित्य सत्ताद्वैतमयात्मकः । कर्माद्वैतम् अनादृत्य द्वैताद्वैतमयो भव
Relying on the non-duality of being, whose nature is the non-duality of existence, disregarding the non-duality of action, become one whose nature is both duality and non-duality.
भवभूमिषु भीमासु भवभावनयानया । मा पतोत्पातपूर्णासु नदीष्व् अन्धः करी यथा
On the dreadful grounds of existence, through this process of imagining existence, do not, like a blind elephant, fall into rivers filled with calamities.
द्वित्वं न सम्भवति सर्वगते महात्मन्य् आत्मन्य् अथैक्यम् अपि च द्वितयोदितात्म । अद्वैतम् ऐक्यरहितं सततोदितं च सर्वं न किञ्चिद् अपि चाहुर् अतस् स्वरूपम्
Duality does not arise in the all-pervading great Self, nor does unity, which comes from duality. Non-duality, free from unity, is ever manifest; thus, they say nothing at all is the true nature.
नैवाहम् अस्मि न च नाम जगन्ति सन्ति सर्वं च विद्यत इदं ननु निर्विकारम् । विज्ञानमात्रम् अवभासत एव शान्तं नासन् न सज् जगद् अहं च सदेति विद्धि
I am not; nor is there any name, nor do worlds exist. All this is only consciousness, indeed unchanging. Only pure awareness shines forth, peaceful; know that neither the world nor I exist as real or unreal.
परमम् अमृतम् आद्यं भासनं सर्वभासाम् अजम् अजरम् अचिन्त्यं निष्क्रमं निर्विकारम् । विगतकरणजालम् जीवनं जीवशक्तेस् सकलकलनहीनं कारणं कारणानाम्
The supreme, primordial immortality is the radiance behind all radiances, unborn, undecaying, inconceivable, without origin, unchanging; free from the web of senses, the life-force of all living beings, devoid of all constructs, the cause of all causes.
सततम् उदितम् ईशं व्यातते चित्प्रकाशे स्थितम् अनुभवबीजं स्वात्मभावोपदेश्यम् । स्वदनम् अनु चितो ऽन्तर् ब्रह्म सर्वं सदैतत् त्वम् अहम् अपि जगच् चेत्य् अस्तु ते निश्चयो ऽन्तः
Ever manifest as the Lord, pervading the light of consciousness, established as the seed of experience, taught as the essence of one's own self; tasting this within consciousness, let your conviction be: 'Brahman is everything, always; you, I, and the world.'
मुक्ताशयानां महताम् अहतानां कुदृष्टिभिः । स्वभावो ऽयं महाबाहो लीलया चरताम् इह
O mighty-armed one, this is the nature of the great ones whose minds are liberated and unharmed, who move here freely, unaffected by distorted views.
विहरन्न् अपि संसारे जीवन्मुक्तमना मुनिः । आदिमध्यान्तविरसा विहसञ् जागतीर् गतीः
Even while living in the world, the sage whose mind is liberated laughs at all worldly paths, being free from beginning, middle, and end.
सर्वप्रकृतकार्यस्थो मध्यस्थस् सर्ववृत्तिषु । ध्येयं तं वासनात्यागम् अवलम्ब्य व्यवस्थितः
Remaining amidst all natural actions, impartial in every activity, he is to be contemplated, established by abandoning all tendencies.
सर्वत्र विगतोद्वेगस् सर्वार्थपरिपोषकः । विवेकोद्यानतुष्टात्मा प्रबोधोपवने स्थितः
Everywhere free from anxiety, nourishing all purposes, his mind delights in the garden of discernment, standing in the grove of awakening.
सर्वातीतपदालम्बी पूर्णेन्दुशिशिराशयः । नोद्वेगी न च तुष्टात्मा संसारे नावसीदति
Relying on the state beyond all, with a mind cool as the full moon, neither disturbed nor contented, he does not sink in the world.
सर्वशत्रुषु मध्यस्थो दयादाक्षिण्यसंयुतः । प्राप्तक्रमकरो ऽग्र्याणां संसारे नावसीदति
One who remains impartial among all enemies, endowed with compassion and generosity, and acts appropriately as circumstances arise, does not sink in the ocean of worldly existence.
नाभिनन्दति न द्वेष्टि न शोचति न काङ्क्षति । मौनस्थः प्रकृतारम्भी संसारे नावसीदति
He neither delights nor hates, neither grieves nor desires; established in silence, engaged in natural action, he does not sink in the ocean of worldly existence.
पृष्टस् सन् प्रकृतं वक्ता न पृष्टस् स्थाणुवत् स्थितः । ईहितानीहितैर् मुक्तस् संसारे नावसीदति
When questioned, he speaks appropriately; when not questioned, he remains like a pillar; free from both effort and non-effort, he does not sink in the ocean of worldly existence.
सर्वस्याभिमतं वक्ता चोदितः पेशलोक्तिमान् । आशयज्ञश् च भूतानां संसारे नावसीदति
When prompted, he speaks what is agreeable to all, skillful in pleasant speech, and understanding the intentions of beings; he does not sink in the ocean of worldly existence.
युक्तायुक्तदशाग्रस्तम् आशोपहतचेष्टितम् । जानाति लोकवृत्तान्तं करकोटरबिल्ववत्
He knows the ways of the world—those caught in proper and improper states, whose actions are hindered by hope—just as one knows the contents of a crow’s nest or a bilva fruit.
परं पदम् उपारूढो भङ्गुरां जागतीं स्थितिम् । अन्तश्शीतलया बुद्ध्या हसन्न् इव निरीक्षते
Having ascended to the supreme state, he observes the fragile condition of the world with a mind cooled within, as if smiling.
जितचित्ता महात्मानो ये हि दृष्टपरावराः । स्वभाव ईदृशस् तेषां कथितस् तव राघव
Those great souls who have conquered their minds and seen the highest and lowest realities—their nature, O Raghava, has thus been described to you.
वक्तुं वयं तु मूर्खाणाम् अजितात्मीयचेतसाम् । भोगकर्दममग्नानां न विद्मो ऽभिमतं मतम्
But as for us, we do not know what is agreeable to speak for the ignorant, those whose minds are unconquered, and who are immersed in the mire of enjoyment.
तेषाम् अभिमता नार्यो हावभावविभूषणाः । ज्वाला नरकवह्नीनां यास् ताः कनकरोचिषः
Those women whom they desire, adorned with gestures and expressions, are but the flames of hellfire, though they shine with a golden radiance.
