इत्य् उक्ते मुनिनाथेन सन्देहवति पार्थिवे । खेदवत्य् आस्थिते मौनं कञ्चित् कालं प्रतीक्षिणि
After the chief sage spoke thus, while the king remained in doubt and distress, maintaining silence for a while, he waited.
परिखिन्नासु सर्वासु राज्ञीषु नृपसद्मसु । स्थितासु सावधानासु रामचेष्टासु सर्वतः
As all the queens in the royal palace became anxious, and everyone attentively observed Rama's behavior everywhere,
एतस्मिन्न् एव काले तु विश्वामित्र इति श्रुतः । महर्षिर् आगमद् द्रष्टुं तम् अयोध्यां नराधिपम्
At that very moment, the renowned sage Vishvamitra arrived to see the king of Ayodhya.
तस्य यज्ञो ऽथ रक्षोभिस् तदा विलुलुपे किल । मायावीर्यबलोन्मत्तैर् धर्मकामस्य धीमतः
At that time, the sage's sacrifice was indeed being disrupted by demons, intoxicated by the power of their magical strength, though he was wise and devoted to righteousness.
रक्षार्थं तस्य यज्ञस्य द्रष्टुम् ऐच्छत् स पार्थिवम् । न हि शक्तो ह्य् अविघ्नेन तम् आप्तुं स मुनिः क्रतुम्
For the protection of that sacrifice, he wished to see the king; for the sage was not able to accomplish that ritual without hindrance.
ततस् तेषां विनाशार्थम् उद्यतस् तपसां निधिः । विश्वामित्रो महातेजा अयोध्याम् अभ्ययात् पुरीम्
Then, intending the destruction of those ascetics, the great and radiant Viśvāmitra, a treasury of austerity, approached the city of Ayodhyā.
स राज्ञो दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी द्वाराध्यक्षान् उवाच ह । शीघ्रम् आख्यात मां प्राप्तं कौशिकं गाधिनस् सुतम्
Desiring an audience with the king, he spoke to the gatekeepers: 'Quickly announce that I, Kauśika, son of Gādhi, have arrived.'
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा द्वास्स्था राजगृहं ययुः । सम्भ्रान्तमनसस् सर्वे तेन वाक्येन चोदिताः
Hearing his words, all the doorkeepers, their minds agitated by that command, went to the royal residence.
ते गत्वा राजभवनं विश्वामित्रम् ऋषिं ततः । प्राप्तम् आवेदयाम् आसुः प्रतीहारपतिं तदा
Having gone to the royal palace, they then reported to the chief chamberlain that the sage Viśvāmitra had arrived.
अथास्थानगतं भूपं राजमण्डलमालितम् । समुपेत्य त्वरायुक्तो याष्टीको ऽसौ व्यजिज्ञपत्
Then, approaching the king, who was seated in the assembly and surrounded by the royal court, the chamberlain quickly informed him.
देव द्वारि महातेजा बालभास्करभास्वरः । ज्वालारुणजटाजूटः पुमाञ् श्रीमान् अवस्थितः
'O lord, at the gate stands a radiant man, shining like the young sun, with flaming, reddish matted locks, and possessing great splendor.'
सचामरपताकाढ्यं साश्वेभपुरुषायुधम् । कृतवांस् तं प्रदेशं यस् तेजोभिः कीर्णकाञ्चनम्
He has adorned that place with fans and banners, with horses, elephants, men, and weapons, making it shine like gold with his brilliance.
वक्त्य् अस्मान् आशु याष्टीका निवेदयत राजनि । विश्वामित्रो मुनिः प्राप्त इत्य् अनुद्धतया गिरा
Go quickly and inform the king with humility that the sage Viśvāmitra has arrived.
इति याष्टीकवचनम् आकर्ण्य नृपसत्तमः । स समन्त्री ससामन्तः प्रोत्तस्थे हेमविष्टरात्
Hearing these words from the staff-bearer, the noble king, together with his ministers and vassals, rose from his golden seat.
पदातिर् एव महतां राज्ञां वृन्देन पालितः । वसिष्ठवामदेवाभ्यां सह सामन्तसंस्तुतः
Accompanied by a great retinue of kings on foot, and praised by his vassals, he proceeded with Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva.
जगाम तत्र यत्रासौ विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः । ददर्श मुनिशार्दूलं द्वारभूमाव् अधिष्ठितम्
He went to the place where the great sage Viśvāmitra was, and saw that tiger among sages standing on the threshold.
केनापि कारणेनोर्वीतलम् अर्कम् इवागतम् । ब्राह्मेण तेजसाक्रान्तं क्षात्रेण च महौजसा
For some reason, he had come to the earth like the sun, filled with Brahminical brilliance and the mighty energy of a warrior.
जराजरढया नित्यं तपःप्रसररूक्षया । जटावल्ल्या वृतस्कन्धं ससन्ध्याभ्रम् इवाचलम्
His shoulders were encircled by matted locks, always rough from the intensity of ascetic practice and aged by time, resembling a mountain wreathed in twilight clouds.
उपशान्तं च कान्तं च दीप्तम् अप्रतिघं तथा । निभृतं चोर्जिताकारं दधानं भास्वरं वपुः
He was tranquil and handsome, radiant and unimpeded, composed and majestic in form, bearing a resplendent body.
पेशलेनातिभीमेन प्रसन्नेनाकुलेन च । गम्भीरेणातिपूर्णेन तेजसा रञ्जितप्रजम्
With a gracious yet awe-inspiring, serene yet intense presence, and a profound, overflowing brilliance that inspired the people.
अनन्तजीवितदशासखीम् एकाम् अनिन्दिताम् । धारयन्तं करे श्लक्ष्णां वीणाम् अम्लानमानसम्
Holding in his hand a smooth lute, his mind unwithering, he was accompanied by the one blameless friend—endless duration of life.
करुणाक्रान्तचेतस्त्वात् प्रसन्नमधुरेक्षितैः । ईक्षणैर् अमृतेनेव संसिञ्चन्तम् इमाः प्रजाः
His heart overcome with compassion, with clear and gentle eyes he seemed to sprinkle these people with nectar by his very gaze.
सितासितततापाङ्गं धवलप्रोन्नतभ्रुवम् । आनन्दं च भयं चान्तः प्रयच्छन्तम् अवेक्षितुः
With glances both bright and dark, with shining, elevated brows, he bestowed both joy and fear within the hearts of those who beheld him.
मुनिम् आलोक्य भूपालो दूराद् एवानताकृतिः । प्रणनाम गलन्मौलिमणिमालितभूतलम्
Seeing the sage from afar, the king, his posture bowed, paid homage, his jeweled crown touching the earth.
मुनिर् अप्य् अवनेर् ईशं भास्वान् इव शतक्रतुम् । तत्राभिवादयां चक्रे मधुरोदारया गिरा
The sage, too, greeted the lord of the earth there, as the sun greets Indra, with words sweet and noble.
ततो वसिष्ठप्रमुखास् सर्व एव द्विजातयः । स्वागतादिक्रमेणैनं पूजयाम् आसुर् आदृताः
Then all the twice-born, led by Vasiṣṭha, honored him with due welcome and respect.
अशङ्कितोपनीतेन भास्वता दर्शनेन ते । साधो स्वनुगृहीतास् स्मो रविणेवाम्बुजाकराः
By your radiant and unhesitating presence, O noble one, we are blessed, just as lotuses are by the sun.
यद् अनादि यद् अक्षुब्धं यद् अपायविवर्जितम् । तद् आनन्दसुखं प्राप्ता अद्य त्वद्दर्शनान् मुने
That which is beginningless, undisturbed, and free from decline—that blissful happiness we have attained today by seeing you, O sage.
अद्य वर्तामहे नूनं धर्म्याणां धुरि धर्मतः । भवदागमनस्येमे यद् वयं लक्ष्यतां गताः
Surely today we have come to be regarded among the foremost of the righteous, for by virtue of righteousness, we have become the focus of your arrival.
एवं प्रकथयन्तो ऽत्र राजानो ऽथ महर्षयः । आसनेषु सभास्थानम् आस्थाय समुपाविशन्
Thus conversing among themselves, the kings and the great sages then took their seats in the assembly hall.
