Across the field of battle, the sky itself seemed torn asunder. Once-proud parasols, fluttering banners, and elegant fans—symbols of royal splendor—now lay utterly shattered, scattered like hailstones flung by a merciless storm. In the heavens above, countless arrows carried a rain of spears, their descent as ruinous as swarms of locusts stripping the earth of its crops’ brilliance. The very air thrummed with a dreadful roar—the fierce cry of Death incarnate—rising from the harsh clash of armor and the resounding ring of swords wielded by warriors whose arms stretched wide in relentless combat. Winds swept volleys of arrows across the field, stirring streams of blood that flowed from shattered teeth, while in this hour of destruction, mighty elephants—once towering and proud—lay broken upon the earth like fallen mountains. Chariots, horses, and warriors, along with their noble lords, were engulfed in a vast lake of blood, its red surface echoing with the cries of despair: “Alas! Lost! Destroyed!” The chariot-city itself seemed to sink beneath this tide of ruin. Upon the battlefield, as if the very Night of Time danced in wild abandon, the sharp, harsh clangor of swords against armor rose, ringing out like the music of a veena, but wrought from suffering and chaos. The winds, now tinged with blood, reddened the directions as they carried drops fallen from men, elephants, horses, and the mounting heaps of the slain. Above, the sky became an ocean of sword-blades, within which the dark tresses of Kali, goddess of destruction, shimmered—her hair adorned with garlands of arrow-buds that flashed like rain-laden lightning. The earth and armies, stained with fresh blood and bristling with weapons, glowed with a terrible blaze, as if the world itself had become a tumultuous realm of fire. Showers of arrows, spears, javelins, swords, and maces rained from warriors like Bhusunda and others, but through mutual destruction, these weapons were shattered and reduced to fragments. In the midst of this chaos, only steadfast composure remained as a weapon—unaware of others’ actions, the battle seemed, for a moment, to slumber, filled with the wisdom of seeking out agitation and wrath. Yet the ceaseless clamor of weapons and the clash of blows gave voice to the dreadful spirit of battle, which seemed to sing, rising ever higher with the tumult of destruction. The ocean of battle, thick with the dust of shattered weapons, appeared as a sea of sand, its waves formed by the broken parasols of fallen warriors. This mountain of battle, fierce and swift-winged, filled the realms of kings with the echo of shattered drums, as if enacting a wild, cosmic dance in the sky at the world’s end. Cries of “Alas! Fie!” rang out as blazing arrows, flashing like lightning from dreadful, uplifted bows, sped forth with sharp twangs, striking mountain peaks and unleashing terrifying roars. As fire-bright arrows broke limbs and raged unchecked, voices urged, “Let us go, friend, before these burning arrows cease their assault—let us go, for this is already the fourth day passing.” Then, as waves of horses surged forward in readiness, the ocean of battle became like a madman, whirling in a wild dance. The sharp fins of arrows rested on shields and drums, their hollows churned by the surging tides of horses and elephants, making the field tumultuous and chaotic. Within this maelstrom, a great warrior was surrounded by armies led by various weapons and commanders, amidst tumultuous crowds of intoxicated elephants and hosts both moving and unmoving. His head spun like a tuft of grass caught in the eddies of a hundred wheels, enveloped by dust and clouds, and illuminated by the flash of swords. He was like a lone ship amidst the vast formations of crocodile-like warriors, broken and breaking, echoing with the thunder of great whirlpools and the reverberation of cavernous roars. Scattered like mustard seeds among advancing formations of fish, the multitude of arrows, and circles of banners torn by the waves of weapons, he pressed on. Encircled by whirlpools resembling the wounds of weapons in the ocean, he moved among the dense, tumultuous currents like a giant timi fish. Clad in black iron, he and his army moved through dreadful waters, trapped within lines of whirlpools and frightening mountain-like obstacles. Clouds of darkness, formed from the mist of arrow-spray, enveloped him, filled with a deep, resonant sound that drowned all else. Agitated by the falling and rising fragments of heads, his warriors whirled within the inner circles of the vortex formations. He rose up fierce as a stormy wave, bristling with the bow of hardship and the earrings of calamity, surging forth like a mighty billow from the netherworld, his army swelling fearlessly. Banners and parasols foamed around him, marking the endless comings and goings, as he bore the flood of a river of blood, sweeping chariots and trees away in its current. Adorned with bubbles of blood, elephantine in form, the current of his army churned with the waters of horses and elephants. The battle itself became astonishing to behold—like a village suspended in the sky—and as unsteady as mountains shaken by the earthquake of dissolution. Horses and birds swam through the bloody waters, elephants fell on the riverbanks, herds of frightened deer scattered, and the air resounded with tumultuous roars. Rows of arrows and spears made the battlefield tremble, quivering under the charge of horses and the rain of weapons. The cries of valiant heroes echoed like the roar of elephants, the caves of drums resounded, the army-cloud spread forth, and the chiefs of warriors rolled about in the fray. The dust-cloud of the army billowed, the peaks of warriors fell, the bodies of splendid chariots flew, and circles of swords descended from above. The great warrior rose, adorned with cloth and garlands, banners and umbrellas like clouds, carrying with him a flood of red rivers and scattering shields as he advanced. He became the very image of the battle’s end—tumultuous, swallowing the world, with fallen standards, umbrellas, banners, chariots, and infantry strewn everywhere. Weapons rained down, pure and bright, shining like many suns, tormenting all people with the intense suffering of life. Whirlpools of bows and lotus-shaped arrows flowed ceaselessly, while streaks of swords and stones flashed like lightning across the sky. Mountains of warriors fell into the ocean of blood, and engines and stones scattered across the heavens like stars. Clouds of arrows filled the sky like whirlpools of churning wheels, and armies were burned by weapons as if by fire, leaving vast gaps between the worlds themselves.
