The battlefield was a vast expanse, filled with countless soldiers, each standing motionless and tense, their brows furrowed in fierce rivalry. Every warrior was hardened, watching the fall of blows with unwavering resolve. The harsh clashing of limbs and the sharp sound of armor echoed across the field; the faces of these bold and unyielding warriors were hollowed by their utter fearlessness. Uncertainty hung heavy over their lives, dependent solely on the arrangement and sight of their positions amidst the chaos. Their bodies, covered in dust, appeared aged and worn, as though the years of battle had already taken their toll. Amidst this turmoil, she—breath hurried from witnessing the early blows—sat silent, as if sealed in sleep, the sound of waves within her stilled. The tumult of conch shells, cymbals, drums, and trumpets had faded, leaving the earth everywhere covered in dust and blood. Inch by inch, those intent on fleeing abandoned the field, which was now strewn with the shining bodies of fish-like warriors and the scattered ranks of makaras. Standards and clusters of banners rose above the trees, and the forests were transformed as elephants lifted their trunks, making the battlefield appear like a wooded expanse. The air was alive with the fluttering wings of birds, the clamor of weapons, and the resounding 'dhamad dham'—the breath of warriors filled the sky with noise. Chariot formations pressed upon wicked and valiant demons, while the tumult of the Garuda formation scattered the host of serpents. The fierce array of the Śyena formation was broken, its ranks thrown into confusion, and groups of heroes fell, crushed by the collisions and blows of one another. Various battle formations, terrifying in their inner clamor, echoed through the halls as warriors brandished their heavy maces. The sun itself was darkened by a network of black weapons, and the sound of arrows, like wind shaking silk-cotton trees, roared across the field. It was as if the battlefield had endured countless aeons, rising up like a single ocean agitated by the winds of dissolution. Darkness arose, disturbed in the caverns of the underworld; the wild shore at the boundary between worlds trembled with the frenzied dance of madmen, and the earth seemed to break open with the mass of great hells. The tumult of lances, clubs, swords, and axes darkened the scene, as if the world would soon become a single, unfathomable ocean by floods of heated water. At this moment, a devotee addressed the Lord, asking, “O Lord, briefly tell me about this battle, for the words you speak delight the listener’s ear.” Then, in the sky, two goddesses, eager to witness the battle, sat together in a beautiful, prepared aerial chariot, steady and unmoving. Meanwhile, the opponent of the playful Lord, unable to endure the intense suffering of battle, began to languish. Like a wave rising from the ocean of dissolution, a fierce warrior hurled a mace at his foe’s chest, as a rock is cast down from a mountain peak. With the force of the ocean at dissolution, a violent clash of weapons erupted between the two armies, scattering sparks and flashes like fire. The sky was marked by lines at the tips of swiftly flowing streams, and the clamor of jhaṇajhaṇa sounds reverberated throughout. A tumultuous roar mixed with heroic shouts echoed, as arrows poured forth like a canopy of sunlight amidst clouds. The battlefield blazed with the ringing of swords and the clashing of shields, fragments of weapons severed by mutual blows scattered across the sky. Heaven itself was traversed by the movement of heroic arms; celestial maidens fled swiftly, startled by the twanging of bows and the whirling of wheels. The great tumult of battle cries resembled the buzzing of bees, forming a dense sound, as if, by the force of unity, one were established in absolute samadhi. Fragments of heroic heads were severed by the sharp tips of showers of arrows, and the clashing of bodies produced a tumultuous ringing of armor. The sharp clash of weapons struck by shouts of ‘huṅ’, and fierce waves of swiftly flowing streams surged in all directions without limit. The tumult of weapon collisions, rattling seized by fists, and loud crackling and bursting sounds resounded everywhere. With the roaring sound of swords clashing and the thunderous din of blazing weapons, the battlefield resounded with the tumult of arrows and the cries of the wounded. ‘Dhag dhag dhag’—so rang out, as blood poured from wounds at the throat, severed arms and heads scattered, and the sky was left without a gap by fragments of broken swords. Hair was singed by sparks of fire leaping from shattered shields, and the battlefield echoed with the heavy clang of swords given by warriors as they fell. Blood rose in waves from elephants struck by spears, and the harsh sound of tusks grinding against tusks filled the air with a fierce cry. The thunderous noise of mighty maces crushing crowds resounded, while the sky was covered by clusters of fallen heroes’ heads, spread like lotuses. Dust clouds thickened the sky, raised by the arms of warriors and elephants; the hair of slain enemies was seized by the victorious, who retaliated fiercely against their foes. Terror grew as nails scratched at eyes, ears, and noses; chariots rolled on the trembling earth, overturned by charging elephants. The battlefield was adorned with blood-soaked garments from wounds caused by spears, and weapons flew in streams, shrouded by clouds of dust stirred up by the conflict. Proud as the sea whose waves are gathered into a single mass, Death consumed the warriors, delighting in wild laughter and play. He thundered like the roaring of clouds shattered by the mighty peaks of proud mountains and kingly elephants, wielding wheels, spears, and maces beside trees and riverbanks. Like a ram among warriors, he pierced the gaps between threads of arrows and the hollows of trees, his banner and canopy torn and scattered by the confusion of clouds. He rushed among the flying hosts of machines, stones, and wheels, his body torn by death, the cries of wounded warriors resounding fiercely throughout the field.
