Upon that vast and sacred field, two mighty armies assembled, each undisturbed and grand, facing one another with the calm majesty of gentle oceans. Dense and unwavering, they stood in splendid array, each led by a noble king, their resolve unshaken. The warriors, clad in gleaming armor and prepared for battle, were like fire kindled by sacred offerings—eyes restless, alert to the first signs of assault. In their hands, spotless swords flashed, unsheathed and ready, while the field grew thick with the gleam of axes, spears, maces, and shields. As the warriors surged forward, the earth itself trembled—like a forest shaken by Garuda’s mighty wings. Gold armlets upon their arms caught the morning sun, casting a dazzling light across the ranks. Weapons rose in anger as the warriors faced each other, their gazes locked in fierce determination, as if painted upon a wondrous mural. The formations stretched out in long, drawn lines, fixed and unyielding, and the air thundered with the unavoidable clamor of their gathering. In the early hours, with drums long since silenced, the battle lines were drawn—unmoving, sluggish, yet brimming with restrained power. The two armies stood separated by only the span of two bows, with but a single bridge of empty space between them, divided by the wind of imagination—like a single ocean made wild and restless. Amidst this tension, the lord of one host was overwhelmed with anxious thoughts, his heart fragile and restless, like a frog’s croak under the harsh sun. Countless soldiers stood ready to surrender their very breath, archers with bows drawn, arrows poised at their ears, all eager for the coming conflict. The warriors, motionless yet fierce, watched for the first blows, their brows furrowed in rivalry, each one hardened and tense. The harsh clashing of limbs and the sharp sound of armor rang out; faces grew hollow from the intensity of their fearlessness. Their lives hung by a thread, dependent on the arrangement of their ranks and the sight of their positions. Bodies were soon covered in dust, making even the young resemble aged men. The very breath of the earth seemed hurried, as if she herself watched the early blows—her waves stilled, as if sealed in sleep. The tumult of conch shells, cymbals, drums, and trumpets had subsided, leaving the earth blanketed in dust and blood. Inch by inch, some fled the field, leaving behind the shining bodies of fallen warriors and the scattered ranks of those who once stood like makaras in the sea. Standards and banners rose above the trees, and the forests were transformed by elephants lifting their trunks, making the battlefield appear as a wooded expanse. The air was alive with the fluttering of birds’ wings, the clamor of weapons, and the ceaseless ‘dhamad dham’—the very sky resounded with the breath of warriors. Chariot formations pressed upon both the wicked and the valiant, while the tumult of the Garuda formation scattered the serpent hosts. The fierce Śyena formation was broken, its ranks thrown into confusion; heroes fell, crushed by the blows and collisions of their foes. Various terrifying battle formations clashed, echoing with the uproar of warriors wielding heavy maces. The sun itself was darkened by the network of black weapons, and the sound of arrows roared across the field like the wind shaking the silk-cotton trees. The scene seemed to have endured countless aeons, rising like a single ocean agitated by the winds of dissolution, as if at the end of a cosmic cycle. It was as if darkness itself had arisen from the underworld’s caverns, the wild shore between worlds trembling with the frenzied dance of madmen, as if great hells broke through the earth. The tumult of lances, clubs, swords, and axes threatened to flood the world into a single, unfathomable ocean of heated water. At this moment, a devotee humbly asked, “O Lord, tell me briefly of this battle, for your words delight the heart.” In response, high in the sky, two goddesses wishing to witness the great conflict sat together in a beautiful, prepared aerial chariot, steady and unmoving. Meanwhile, the opponent of the playful Lord, unable to endure the fierce suffering of battle, began to languish. Like a wave rising from the ocean at dissolution, a mighty warrior hurled his mace at the chest of his foe, as a rock is cast down from a mountain peak. Then, with the force of the ocean at the world’s end, a violent clash of weapons erupted between the armies, sparks and flashes scattering like fire. The sky was marked by the swift lines of flowing streams, and the clamor of ‘jhaṇajhaṇa’ sounds echoed through the air. Amidst the tumultuous roar and heroic shouts, thunderous din resounded as arrows poured forth like a canopy of sunlight through the clouds. The battlefield blazed with the ringing of swords and the clashing of shields; fragments of weapons, shattered by mutual blows, scattered across the sky. The heavens themselves were traversed by the movements of heroic arms, and celestial maidens fled in haste, startled by the twanging of bows and the whirling of chariot wheels. The cries of battle rose like the buzzing of bees, forming a dense, unbroken sound, as if, by the force of unity, one were established in deepest samadhi. Fragments of heroic heads were severed by the sharp tips of arrow-showers, and the clashing of bodies produced a tumultuous ringing of armor. The sharp clash of weapons, struck by shouts of ‘huṅ’, sent fierce waves surging in all directions, limitless as the ocean. The tumult of weapon collisions, the rattling seized by fists, and the crackling and bursting sounds resounded everywhere. With the roaring clash of swords and the thunderous din of blazing weapons, the field resounded with the tumult of arrows and the cries of the wounded. The sound ‘dhag dhag dhag’ rang out, as blood poured from wounds at the throat, severed arms and heads lay scattered, and the sky was filled to its very limit by fragments of broken swords.
