May I have renown among people. Svaha! May I be more excellent than the wealthy. Svaha! O fortune, may I enter you. Svaha! O fortune, enter me. Svaha! In you, with a thousand branches, may I purify myself. Svaha! As waters flow downward, as months pass into years, so may students come to me from all sides. Svaha! You are the neighbor; do not harm me, do not desert me.
The three utterances—'bhūḥ', 'bhuvaḥ', 'svaḥ'—are indeed these vyāhṛtis. But the teacher of the Mahāchamasya revealed a fourth—'mahaḥ'. That is Brahman; that is the self; the other deities are its limbs. 'Bhūḥ' is this world; 'bhuvaḥ' is the midspace; 'svaḥ' is that world.
'Mahaḥ' is the sun; by the sun, indeed, all worlds are made great. 'Bhūḥ' is fire; 'bhuvaḥ' is air; 'svaḥ' is the sun; 'mahaḥ' is the moon; by the moon, indeed, all lights are made great. 'Bhūḥ' is the Rig Veda; 'bhuvaḥ' is the Sama Veda; 'svaḥ' is the Yajur Veda.
'Mahaḥ' is Brahman; by Brahman, indeed, all the Vedas are made great. 'Bhūḥ' is the vital breath; 'bhuvaḥ' is the downward breath; 'svaḥ' is the diffused breath; 'mahaḥ' is food; by food, indeed, all the vital breaths are made great. Thus, these four are fourfold; four by four are the utterances. Whoever knows them, knows Brahman; all the gods bring offerings to him.
That which is this space within the heart—in it dwells this person, made of mind, immortal, golden. In the midst of the palate, which hangs down like a teat, with the source of the senses, where the hair parts and turns, having pierced the skull—'bhūḥ' rests in fire, 'bhuvaḥ' in air.
'Svaḥ' in the sun, 'mahaḥ' in Brahman. He attains sovereignty; he attains mastery of mind, mastery of speech, mastery of sight, mastery of hearing, mastery of knowledge. Thus he becomes. Brahman has space as its body, truth as its nature, delight in life, mind as bliss, peace, fullness, immortality. Thus meditate, O ancient one.
Earth, midspace, heaven, the directions, and the intermediate directions; fire, air, sun, moon, stars; waters, plants, trees, space, self—thus is the external world. Now, the internal: the vital breath, diffused breath, downward breath, upward breath, equalizing breath; eye, ear, mind, speech, skin; flesh, muscle, sinew, bone, marrow. Having arranged these, the sage declared: 'All this is fivefold; by the fivefold, the fivefold is filled.'
Om is Brahman. Om is all this. With Om, they recite: 'Recite for us, O reciter.' With Om, the Sāman hymns are sung. With Om, the priests utter the shastra texts. With Om, the Adhvaryu accepts the response. With Om, the Brahman priest gives approval. With Om, the Agnihotra is permitted. With Om, the Brahmin, about to teach, says, 'I will speak Brahman.' Thus, he attains Brahman.

Truth and study and teaching of the sacred lore; veracity and study and teaching of the sacred lore; austerity and study and teaching of the sacred lore; self-control and study and teaching of the sacred lore; tranquility and study and teaching of the sacred lore; the fires and study and teaching of the sacred lore; the Agnihotra and study and teaching of the sacred lore; guests and study and teaching of the sacred lore; service to humanity and study and teaching of the sacred lore; offspring and study and teaching of the sacred lore; procreation and study and teaching of the sacred lore; continuity of lineage and study and teaching of the sacred lore. 'Truth,' so says Satyavacha, son of Rathītara. 'Austerity,' so says Taponitya, of the line of Pauruśiṣṭa. 'Study and teaching of the sacred lore alone,' so says Naka, son of Mudgala; for that is indeed austerity, that is indeed austerity.

I am the one who shakes the tree of the world; my fame rises high like the mountain's summit. I am pure, raised upward; I am the possessor of wealth and horses, immortal. I am endowed with radiant splendor, of keen intellect, bathed in immortality. Thus runs the recitation of Triśaṅku concerning the Veda.

Having recited the Veda, the teacher instructs the student: Speak the truth. Practice righteousness. Do not neglect study and teaching of the sacred lore. Having brought the teacher what is dear, do not cut off the line of progeny. Do not neglect truth. Do not neglect righteousness. Do not neglect welfare. Do not neglect prosperity. Do not neglect study and teaching. Do not neglect duties to gods and ancestors.

Regard your mother as a deity. Regard your father as a deity. Regard your teacher as a deity. Regard your guest as a deity. Those actions that are blameless should be practiced, not others. Those deeds of ours that are good should be followed by you, not others.

To whatever Brahmins are superior to us, you should offer a seat and show respect. Give with faith. Do not give without faith. Give with generosity. Give with modesty. Give with fear. Give with understanding. And if you have doubt regarding a deed or conduct—

Wherever Brahmins are deliberating, competent or not, unselfish and devoted to righteousness, act as they would act there. Likewise, in matters already discussed, wherever Brahmins are deliberating, competent or not, unselfish and devoted to righteousness, act as they would act among them. This is the instruction. This is the teaching. This is the secret of the Veda. This is the command. Thus should it be practiced. Thus, indeed, should it be followed.

Om. The knower of Brahman attains the Supreme. Concerning this, it is declared: Brahman is truth, knowledge, infinity. One who knows that Brahman, hidden in the cave, in the highest space, enjoys all desires together with the all-knowing Brahman. From this Self, indeed, arose space; from space, air; from air, fire; from fire, water; from water, earth; from earth, plants; from plants, food; from food, the person. This person, indeed, is made of the essence of food. Of him, this is the head, this is the right wing, this is the left wing, this is the body, this is the foundation, the tail. On this, too, there is a verse.
From food, indeed, are beings born—those who dwell upon the earth. By food, indeed, they live. Into food, too, they finally enter. For food is the eldest of beings; therefore, it is called the universal remedy. All who worship food as Brahman obtain all food. For food is the eldest of beings; therefore, it is called the universal remedy. From food, beings are born; born, they grow by food. Beings eat food and are eaten by food; therefore, it is called food. From this sheath of food, there is another inner self, made of breath. By that, this is filled. That, indeed, is of human form. Concerning its human form, its conformity is as follows: of it, breath is the head, vyāna the right wing, apāna the left wing, space is the body, earth the foundation, the tail. On this, too, there is a verse.

The gods live by breath, as do humans and animals. For breath is the life of beings; therefore, it is called the giver of all life. All, indeed, attain full life who worship breath as Brahman. For breath is the life of beings; therefore, it is called the giver of all life. Of this, the bodily self is as before. From this sheath of breath, there is another inner self, made of mind. By that, this is filled. That, indeed, is of human form. Concerning its human form, its conformity is as follows: of it, the Yajur is the head, the Ṛg the right wing, the Sāman the left wing, instruction is the body, the Atharvāṅgiras the foundation, the tail. On this, too, there is a verse.

From which words turn back, together with the mind, not attaining it—one who knows the bliss of Brahman fears nothing at any time. Of this, the bodily self is as before. From this sheath of mind, there is another inner self, made of knowledge. By that, this is filled. That, indeed, is of human form. Concerning its human form, its conformity is as follows: of it, faith is the head, order is the right wing, truth is the left wing, concentration is the body, greatness is the foundation, the tail. On this, too, there is a verse.

Knowledge performs sacrifice; it also performs actions. All the gods worship knowledge as the highest Brahman. If one knows knowledge as Brahman, and does not err, then, having cast off the body, he attains all desires. Of this, the bodily self is as before. From this sheath of knowledge, there is another inner self, made of bliss. By that, this is filled. That, indeed, is of human form. Concerning its human form, its conformity is as follows: of it, delight is the head, joy the right wing, great joy the left wing, bliss is the body, Brahman is the foundation, the tail. On this, too, there is a verse.

If one knows Brahman as non-existent, he becomes as though non-existent. If one knows Brahman as existent, people know him as existent. Of this, the bodily self is as before. Now, therefore, the inquiry: After departing from this world, does one who is ignorant go to that world, or does one who knows attain that world? He desired: 'May I be many, may I be born.' He performed austerity. Having performed austerity, he created all this—whatever exists. Having created it, he entered into it. Having entered it, he became both the manifest and the unmanifest, the defined and the undefined, the based and the baseless, knowledge and ignorance, truth and falsehood. Truth became all this; whatever exists, they call it truth. On this, too, there is a verse.

In the beginning, this was non-existence. From that, existence was born. That made itself into its own form; therefore, it is called well-made. Indeed, what is well-made is essence. For having obtained essence, one becomes blissful. For who could breathe, who could live, if this space were not bliss? It is this, indeed, that brings bliss. When one finds firm footing in this invisible, unembodied, undefined, and unbased, one attains fearlessness. But when one makes even the slightest distinction in this, then there is fear. For one who perceives duality, there is fear. On this, too, there is a verse.

From which words turn back, together with the mind, not attaining it—one who knows the bliss of Brahman fears nothing at all. Indeed, for such a one, there is no burning regret: 'Why did I not do what is good? Why did I do what is evil?' Whoever knows thus fills himself with these selves; indeed, he fills himself with both. Whoever knows thus—thus is the teaching.

Bṛgu, the son of Varuṇa, approached his father Varuṇa and said: 'Venerable Sir, teach me Brahman.' To him, Varuṇa spoke thus: 'Food, breath, sight, hearing, mind, and speech.' He said: 'From which, indeed, these beings are born; by which, when born, they live; into which, at departing, they enter—seek to know that. That is Brahman.' He practiced austerity. Having practiced austerity—
He understood: 'Food is Brahman.' For, indeed, from food these beings are born; by food, when born, they live; into food, at departing, they enter. Having understood this, he again approached his father Varuṇa and said: 'Venerable Sir, teach me Brahman.' He said: 'Seek to know Brahman through austerity; austerity is Brahman.' He practiced austerity. Having practiced austerity—

He understood: 'Breath is Brahman.' Indeed, from breath alone these beings are born; by breath, having been born, they live; into breath they enter and merge at departure. Having realized this, he again approached Varuna, his father, and said: 'Revered Sir, teach me Brahman.' He replied: 'Seek to know Brahman through austerity; austerity is Brahman.' He practiced austerity; having practiced austerity—

He understood: 'Mind is Brahman.' Indeed, from mind alone these beings are born; by mind, having been born, they live; into mind they enter and merge at departure. Having realized this, he again approached Varuna, his father, and said: 'Revered Sir, teach me Brahman.' He replied: 'Seek to know Brahman through austerity; austerity is Brahman.' He practiced austerity; having practiced austerity—
He understood: 'Knowledge is Brahman.' Indeed, from knowledge alone these beings are born; by knowledge, having been born, they live; into knowledge they enter and merge at departure. Having realized this, he again approached Varuna, his father, and said: 'Revered Sir, teach me Brahman.' He replied: 'Seek to know Brahman through austerity; austerity is Brahman.' He practiced austerity; having practiced austerity—
He understood: 'Bliss is Brahman.' Indeed, from bliss alone these beings are born; by bliss, having been born, they live; into bliss they enter and merge at departure. This is the knowledge of Bhrigu and Varuna, established in the highest heaven. Whoever knows thus stands firm; he becomes endowed with food and the eater of food; he becomes great in offspring, cattle, the radiance of Brahman, and great in fame.
The wind blows; out of fear of Him, the sun rises. Out of His fear, fire and Indra and Death, as the fifth, run their course. This is the inquiry into bliss. Suppose there is a young man, learned, strong, and vigorous, possessing all the wealth of the world—this is one measure of human bliss. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of the human gandharvas, and so for one who is learned and untainted by desire. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of the divine gandharvas, and so for one who is learned and untainted by desire. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of the ancestors in their long-abiding world. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of those born as gods by birth, and so for one who is learned and untainted by desire. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of the gods who became gods through works, and so for one who is learned and untainted by desire. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of the gods, and so for one who is learned and untainted by desire. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of Indra, and so for one who is learned and untainted by desire. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of Bṛhaspati, and so for one who is learned and untainted by desire. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of Prajāpati, and so for one who is learned and untainted by desire. A hundredfold of that is the bliss of Brahman, and so for one who is learned and untainted by desire. He who is in the person and he who is in the sun—he is one. Whoever knows thus, after departing from this world, attains this self made of food, attains this self made of breath, attains this self made of mind, attains this self made of knowledge, attains this self made of bliss. On this, too, there is a verse.
