Some wise thinkers speak of inherent nature, others of time, while many are bewildered; but this is the greatness of the divine, by which this world and the wheel of Brahman revolve.
By whom all this is perpetually enveloped—he is the knower, the master of time, endowed with qualities, omniscient; by him, action is directed and unfolds, and earth, water, fire, air, and space are to be contemplated.
Having performed that action and withdrawn again, attaining union with the essence of truth by truth, whether by one, two, three, or eight means, by time and by subtle qualities of the self.
Beginning actions endowed with qualities, and assigning all states, whoever does so—when these cease, the destruction of performed actions occurs; with the exhaustion of action, he attains the true essence, not another.
He is the origin, the cause of union and its reason, transcending the three times, though himself timeless; him, the all-formed, the source of existence, the worthy deity, established in one's own mind, should be worshipped first.
He is beyond the forms of tree, time, and shape, from whom this world undergoes transformation; knowing the lord of fortune, who brings righteousness and removes evil, established within oneself, immortal, the abode of all.
We know that supreme great lord of lords, that highest divinity among deities, the master of masters, who is beyond all; we know the divine, the lord of the world, worthy of worship.
He has neither work nor instrument; nor is there anyone equal or superior to him; his supreme power is heard to be manifold, and his knowledge, strength, and action are inherent.
He has no master in the world, nor ruler, nor any mark; he is the cause, the lord of instruments and their masters; nor has he any creator or overlord.
Like a spider with threads, by his own nature, the one divine covers himself with threads born of the primordial; may that Brahman sustain us.
The one divine, hidden in all beings, all-pervading, the inner self of all, the overseer of action, the indwelling of all beings, the witness, the consciousness, the solitary, and devoid of qualities.
The one sovereign among the inactive many, the one seed who makes many forms; those wise ones who perceive him established within themselves attain eternal happiness, not others.
He is eternal among the eternal, conscious among the conscious, the one who fulfills the desires of the many; that cause is to be known through Sāṃkhya and Yoga; knowing the divine, one is freed from all bonds.
There the sun does not shine, nor the moon and stars, nor do these lightning flashes shine, much less this fire; by his radiance alone all shines, and by his light all this is illuminated.
The one swan in the midst of this world, he is the fire established in water; knowing him alone, one goes beyond death—there is no other path for liberation.
He is the creator of all, the knower of all, self-born, the knower, master of time, endowed with qualities, omniscient, lord of primordial matter and the knower of the field, lord of qualities, the cause of bondage, liberation, and existence.
He, composed of that, immortal, established in sovereignty, the knower, all-pervading, the protector of this world; he eternally rules this universe, and there is no other cause for sovereignty.
He who first created Brahmā and who indeed sent forth the Vedas to him—to that divine, the revealer of self-knowledge and wisdom, desiring liberation, I seek refuge.
Without parts, without action, peaceful, faultless, stainless, the supreme bridge to immortality, like fire when its fuel is consumed.
When humans will wrap space as if it were leather, then, without knowing the divine, the end of suffering will come.
Through the power of austerity and by the grace of God, Śvetāśvatara, the wise, spoke rightly to those beyond the stages of life, the highest purity, cherished by the assembly of sages.
In the Vedānta, the supreme secret was declared in ancient times; it should not be given to one who is not tranquil, nor to one who is not a son or a worthy disciple.
For one whose devotion to God is supreme, and as to God, so to the teacher, to such a great soul these meanings spoken here shine forth, indeed shine forth.
