यद् आत्मतत्त्वेन तु ब्रह्मतत्त्वं दीपोपमेनेह युक्तः प्रपश्येत् अजं ध्रुवं सर्वतत्त्वैर् विशुद्धं ज्ञात्वा देवं मुच्यते सर्वपाशैः
When, by knowing the self, one perceives the essence of Brahman—unborn, eternal, pure among all realities, like a lamp—then, knowing that god, one is freed from all bonds.
एष ह देवः प्रदिशो ऽनु सर्वाः पूर्वो ह जातः स उ गर्भे अन्तः स एव जातः स जनिष्यमानः प्रत्यङ् जनास् तिष्ठति सर्वतोमुखः
This god pervades all directions; he was born before all; he is within the womb; he is born and will be born; he stands facing all beings, with faces everywhere.
यो देवो अग्नौ यो अप्सु यो विश्वं भुवनम् आविवेश य ओषधीषु यो वनस्पतीषु तस्मै देवाय नमो नमः
He who is the god in fire, in water, who has entered the whole world, who is in plants and trees—to that god we offer repeated homage.
य एको जालवान् ईशत ईशनीभिः सर्वांल् लोकान् ईशत ईशनीभिः य एवैक उद्भवे संभवे च य एतद् विदुर् अमृतास् ते भवन्ति
He alone, covered by his own power, rules all worlds with his powers; he alone is at the origin and in the unfolding. Those who know this become immortal.
एको हि रुद्रो न द्वितीयाय तस्थे य इमांल् लोकान् ईशत ईशनीभिः प्रत्यङ् जनास् तिष्ठति संचुकोचान्तकाले संसृज्य विश्वा भुवनानि गोपाः
Rudra alone stands, there is no second; he rules all these worlds with his powers. He stands facing all beings, withdrawing at the end, having created and protected all worlds.
विश्वतश्चक्षुर् उत विश्वतोमुखो विश्वतोबाहुर् उत विश्वतस्पात् सं बाहुभ्यां धमति सं पतत्रैर् द्यावाभूमी जनयन् देव एकः
With eyes everywhere, faces everywhere, arms everywhere, feet everywhere, the one god creates heaven and earth together, blowing forth with his arms and wings.
यो देवानां प्रभवश् चोद्भवश् च विश्वाधिपो रुद्रो महर्षिः हिरण्यगर्भं जनयामास पूर्वं स नो बुद्ध्या शुभया संयुनक्तु
He who is the origin and source of the gods, the ruler of the universe, Rudra the great sage, created Hiranyagarbha in the beginning; may he unite us with auspicious wisdom.
या ते रुद्र शिवा तनूर् अघोरापापकाशिनी तया नस् तनुवा शंतमया गिरिशन्ताभिचाकशीहि
O Rudra, your gracious form, which is not terrifying and does not reveal evil, with that peaceful body, O mountain-dweller, shine upon us.
याम् इषुं गिरिशन्त हस्ते बिभर्ष्य् अस्तवे शिवां गिरित्र तां कुरु मा हिंसीः पुरुषं जगत्
The arrow which you, O mountain-lord, hold in your hand for protection, O mountain-protector, make it auspicious; do not harm the person or the world.
ततः परं ब्रह्म परं बृहन्तं यथानिकायं सर्वभूतेषु गूढं विश्वस्यैकं परिवेष्टितारम् ईशं तं ज्ञात्वामृता भवन्ति
Then, the supreme Brahman, the highest and vast, hidden in all beings according to their forms, the one who encompasses the universe, knowing that Lord, people become immortal.
वेदाहम् एतं पुरुषं महान्तम् आदित्यवर्णं तमसः परस्तात् तम् एव विदित्वाति मृत्युम् एति नान्यः पन्था विद्यते ऽयनाय
I know this great Person, radiant like the sun, beyond darkness; knowing him alone, one crosses over death—there is no other path for liberation.
यस्मात् परं नापरम् अस्ति किंचिद् यस्मान् नाणीयो न ज्यायो ऽस्ति किंचित् वृक्ष इव स्तब्धो दिवि तिष्ठत्य् एकस् तेनेदं पूर्णं पुरुषेण सर्वम्
There is nothing beyond him, nothing smaller or greater; like a tree, he stands firm in the sky, alone, and by him this entire universe is filled.
ततो यद् उत्तरतरं यद् अरूपम् अनामयम् य एतद् विदुर् अमृतास् ते भवन्ति अथेतरे दुःखम् एवापियन्ति
That which is higher, formless, free from affliction—those who know this become immortal; others only experience suffering.
सर्वाननशिरोग्रीवः सर्वभूतगुहाशयः सर्वव्यापी स भगवांस् तस्मात् सर्वगतः शिवः
He has all faces, heads, and necks; he dwells in the hearts of all beings; he pervades everything; therefore, the blessed Shiva is present everywhere.
महान् प्रभुर् वै पुरुषः सत्त्वस्यैष प्रवर्तकः सुनिर्मलाम् इमां प्राप्तिम् ईशानो ज्योतिर् अव्ययः
The Person is great and powerful, the originator of existence; the ruler, pure and luminous, grants this attainment, the imperishable light.
अङ्गुष्ठमात्रः पुरुषो ऽन्तरात्मा सदा जनानां हृदये संनिविष्टः हृदा मनीषा मनसाभिकॢप्तो य एतद् विदुर् अमृतास् ते भवन्ति
The Person, the inner self, is the size of a thumb, always established in the hearts of people; by heart, intellect, and mind he is perceived; those who know this become immortal.
सहस्रशीर्षा पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात् स भूमिं विश्वतो वृत्वा अत्यतिष्ठद् दशाङ्गुलम्
The Person has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet; having enveloped the earth on all sides, he extends beyond it by ten fingers' breadth.
पुरुष एवेदं सर्वं यद् भूतं यच् च भव्यम् उतामृतत्वस्येशानो यद् अन्नेनातिरोहति
The Person alone is all this—what has been and what will be; he is also the lord of immortality, and grows beyond through food.
सर्वतःपाणिपादं तत् सर्वतोऽक्षिशिरोमुखं सर्वतःश्रुतिमल् लोके सर्वम् आवृत्य तिष्ठति
He has hands and feet everywhere, eyes, heads, and mouths everywhere; he hears everywhere in the world, and, covering everything, he stands.
सर्वेन्द्रियगुणाभासं सर्वेन्द्रियविवर्जितं सर्वस्य प्रभुम् ईशानं सर्वस्य शरणं सुहृत्
He appears as the qualities of all the senses, yet is devoid of all senses; he is the lord, ruler, refuge, and friend of all.
नवद्वारे पुरे देही हंसो लेलायते बहिः वशी सर्वस्य लोकस्य स्थावरस्य चरस्य च
In the city with nine gates, the embodied soul, the swan, moves outside playfully; he is the master of all the world, of the immovable and the moving.
अपाणिपादो जवनो ग्रहीता पश्यत्य् अचक्षुः स शृणोत्य् अकर्णः स वेत्ति वेद्यं न च तस्यास्ति वेत्ता तम् आहुर् अग्र्यं पुरुषं महान्तम्
Without hands and feet, he is swift and grasps; he sees without eyes, hears without ears; he knows what is to be known, but no one knows him; they call him the foremost, the great Person.
अणोर् अणीयान् महतो महीयान् आत्मा गुहायां निहितो ऽस्य जन्तोः तम् अक्रतुं पश्यति वीतशोको धातुप्रसादान् महिमानम् ईशम्
The self is subtler than the subtle, greater than the great, hidden in the heart of every creature; the one who is free from desire and sorrow, through purity of mind, sees the majesty of the Lord.
वेदाहम् एतम् अजरं पुराणं सर्वात्मानं सर्वगतं विभुत्वात् जन्मनिरोधं प्रवदन्ति यस्य ब्रह्मवादिनो हि प्रवदन्ति नित्यम्
I know this ageless, ancient, all-pervading self, present everywhere; the knowers of Brahman declare that he is the cessation of birth, and always proclaim him as eternal.
य एको ऽवर्णो बहुधा शक्तियोगाद् वर्णान् अनेकान् निहितार्थो दधाति वि चैति चान्ते विश्वम् आदौ स देवः स नो बुद्ध्या शुभया संयुनक्तु
He who is one and colorless, through the union of powers, assumes many colors, establishes diverse meanings, moves within and at the end of the universe; may that divine one unite us with auspicious understanding.
तद् एवाग्निस् तद् आदित्यस् तद् वायुस् तद् उ चन्द्रमाः तद् एव शुक्रं तद् ब्रह्म तद् आपस् तत् प्रजापतिः
That alone is Agni, that is the Sun, that is Vayu, that is the Moon; that alone is the bright, that is Brahma, that is the waters, that is Prajapati.
त्वं स्त्री त्वं पुमान् असि त्वं कुमार उत वा कुमारी त्वं जीर्णो दण्डेन वञ्चसि त्वं जातो भवसि विश्वतोमुखः
You are woman, you are man; you are boy and also girl; you are the old one who walks with a staff; you are born and become the one with faces everywhere.
नीलः पतङ्गो हरितो लोहिताक्षस् तडिद्गर्भ ऋतवः समुद्राः अनादिमांस् त्वं विभुत्वेन वर्तसे यतो जातानि भुवनानि विश्वा
Dark, winged, green, red-eyed, womb of lightning, seasons, oceans—without beginning, you exist in your vastness, from whom all worlds are born.
अजाम् एकां लोहितशुक्लकृष्णां बह्वीः प्रजाः सृजमानां सरूपाः अजो ह्य् एको जुषमाणो ऽनुशेते जहात्य् एनां भुक्तभोगाम् अजो ऽन्यः
The one unborn, red, white, and black, creates many beings of similar forms; one unborn enjoys her and lies beside her, another unborn abandons her after enjoying.
द्वा सुपर्णा सयुजा सखाया समानं वृक्षं परिषस्वजाते तयोर् अन्यः पिप्पलं स्वाद्व् अत्त्य् अनश्नन्न् अन्यो अभिचाकशीति
Two birds, united, friends, embrace the same tree; one eats the sweet fruit, the other, not eating, looks on.
