एको देवः सर्वभूतेषु गूढः सर्वव्यापी सर्वभूतान्तरात्मा कर्माध्यक्षः सर्वभूताधिवासः साक्षी चेता केवलो निर्गुणश् च
The one divine, hidden in all beings, all-pervading, the inner self of all, the overseer of action, the indwelling of all beings, the witness, the consciousness, the solitary, and devoid of qualities.
एको वशी निष्क्रियाणां बहूणाम् एकं बीजं बहुधा यः करोति तम् आत्मस्थं ये ऽनुपश्यन्ति धीरास् तेषां सुखं शाश्वतं नेतरेषां
The one sovereign among the inactive many, the one seed who makes many forms; those wise ones who perceive him established within themselves attain eternal happiness, not others.
नित्यो नित्यानां चेतनश् चेतनानाम् एको बहूनां यो विदधाति कामान् तत् कारणं सांख्ययोगाधिगम्यं ज्ञात्वा देवं मुच्यते सर्वपाशैः
He is eternal among the eternal, conscious among the conscious, the one who fulfills the desires of the many; that cause is to be known through Sāṃkhya and Yoga; knowing the divine, one is freed from all bonds.
न तत्र सूर्यो भाति न चन्द्रतारकं नेमा विद्युतो भान्ति कुतो ऽयम् अग्निः तम् एव भान्तम् अनुभाति सर्वं तस्य भासा सर्वम् इदं विभाति
There the sun does not shine, nor the moon and stars, nor do these lightning flashes shine, much less this fire; by his radiance alone all shines, and by his light all this is illuminated.
एको हंसो भुवनस्यास्य मध्ये स एवाग्निः सलिले संनिविष्टः तम् एव विदित्वाति मृत्युम् एति नान्यः पन्था विद्यते ऽयनाय
The one swan in the midst of this world, he is the fire established in water; knowing him alone, one goes beyond death—there is no other path for liberation.
स विश्वकृद् विश्वविद् आत्मयोनिर् ज्ञः कालकालो गुणी सर्वविद्यः प्रधानक्षेत्रज्ञपतिर् गुणेशः संसारमोक्षस्थितिबन्धहेतुः
He is the creator of all, the knower of all, self-born, the knower, master of time, endowed with qualities, omniscient, lord of primordial matter and the knower of the field, lord of qualities, the cause of bondage, liberation, and existence.
स तन्मयो ह्य् अमृत ईशसंस्थो ज्ञः सर्वगो भुवनस्यास्य गोप्ता स ईशे अस्य जगतो नित्यम् एव नान्यो हेतुर् विद्यत ईशनाय
He, composed of that, immortal, established in sovereignty, the knower, all-pervading, the protector of this world; he eternally rules this universe, and there is no other cause for sovereignty.
यो ब्रह्माणं विदधाति पूर्वं यो वै वेदांश् च प्रहिणोति तस्मै तं ह देवम् आत्मबुद्धिप्रकाशं मुमुक्षुर् वै शरणम् अहं प्रपद्ये
He who first created Brahmā and who indeed sent forth the Vedas to him—to that divine, the revealer of self-knowledge and wisdom, desiring liberation, I seek refuge.
निष्कलं निष्क्रियं शान्तं निरवद्यं निरञ्जनम् अमृतस्य परं सेतुं दग्धेन्धनम् इवानलम्
Without parts, without action, peaceful, faultless, stainless, the supreme bridge to immortality, like fire when its fuel is consumed.
यदा चर्मवद् आकाशं वेष्टयिष्यन्ति मानवाः तदा देवम् अविज्ञाय दुःखस्यान्तो भविष्यति
When humans will wrap space as if it were leather, then, without knowing the divine, the end of suffering will come.
तपःप्रभावाद् देवप्रसादात् ब्रह्म ह श्वेताश्वतरो ऽथ विद्वान् अत्याश्रमिभ्यः परमं पवित्रं प्रोवाच सम्यग् ऋषिसङ्घजुष्टम्
Through the power of austerity and by the grace of God, Śvetāśvatara, the wise, spoke rightly to those beyond the stages of life, the highest purity, cherished by the assembly of sages.
वेदान्ते परमं गुह्यं पुराकल्पे प्रचोदितम् नाप्रशान्ताय दातव्यं नापुत्रायाशिष्याय वा पुनः
In the Vedānta, the supreme secret was declared in ancient times; it should not be given to one who is not tranquil, nor to one who is not a son or a worthy disciple.
यस्य देवे परा भक्तिर् यथा देवे तथा गुरौ तस्यैते कथिता ह्य् अर्थाः प्रकाशन्ते महात्मनः प्रकाशन्ते महात्मनः
For one whose devotion to God is supreme, and as to God, so to the teacher, to such a great soul these meanings spoken here shine forth, indeed shine forth.
