Through the strength of his austerities and by the grace of the Divine, the wise sage Śvetāśvatara attained profound realization. Moved by compassion, he spoke with clarity and truth to those who had gone beyond the ordinary stages of life—souls of the highest purity, deeply revered among assemblies of sages. In ancient times, within the teachings of the Vedānta, this supreme secret was revealed. Yet Śvetāśvatara taught that such knowledge is not to be imparted to anyone who lacks tranquility of mind, nor to those who are not a true son or a worthy disciple. But for one whose devotion to God is supreme, and who holds the teacher in equal reverence as God Himself, to such a great soul the true meanings of these teachings shine forth brilliantly—indeed, they shine forth in their fullness.
