When one acts, then one is steadfast; without acting, one is not steadfast. It is only by acting that one is steadfast. Therefore, action alone must be sought to be known. 'Revered sir, I wish to know action.'
When one attains happiness, then one acts; without attaining happiness, one does not act. It is only by attaining happiness that one acts. Therefore, happiness alone must be sought to be known. 'Revered sir, I wish to know happiness.'
That which is vast is happiness; there is no happiness in the small. The vast alone is happiness. Therefore, the vast alone must be sought to be known. 'Revered sir, I wish to know the vast.'

Where one does not see another, does not hear another, does not know another—that is the vast. But where one sees another, hears another, knows another—that is the small. That which is the vast is immortal; but what is small is mortal. 'Revered sir, in what does it rest?' 'In its own greatness, or not even in greatness.'

Here, people say greatness is cattle and horses, elephants and gold, servants, wives, fields, and houses. But I do not say so.' 'What then do you say?' 'One thing is established in another.'

He is below, he is above, he is behind, he is before, he is to the right, he is to the left; he alone is all this. Therefore, the instruction concerning the self is: I am below, I am above, I am behind, I am before, I am to the right, I am to the left; I alone am all this.

Therefore, the instruction concerning the self is: The self is below, the self is above, the self is behind, the self is before, the self is to the right, the self is to the left; the self alone is all this. One who sees thus, thinks thus, knows thus—he delights in the self, sports in the self, mates with the self, rejoices in the self—he becomes sovereign. In all worlds, he moves as he wishes. But those who know otherwise, others rule them; their worlds are perishable, and in all worlds, they do not move as they wish.

For one who sees thus, thinks thus, knows thus, from the self arises life, from the self hope, from the self memory, from the self space, from the self fire, from the self water, from the self appearance and disappearance, from the self food, from the self strength, from the self knowledge, from the self meditation, from the self understanding, from the self intention, from the self mind, from the self speech, from the self name, from the self mantras, from the self actions; all this is indeed the self.

On this there is this verse: He does not see death, nor sickness, nor pain; he who sees sees all, he attains all everywhere. He becomes one, threefold, fivefold, sevenfold, ninefold, and again elevenfold; a hundred, ten, and one, and also twenty thousand are said. When food is pure, the mind becomes pure; when the mind is pure, memory is steady; when memory is steady, all knots of the heart are loosened. To him, whose stains are washed away, the venerable Sanatkumara shows the further shore of darkness. They call him Skanda; they call him Skanda.

Now, in this city of Brahman, there is a small lotus-like dwelling, and within it is a small space. That which is within it should be sought; that, indeed, should be known.

If they should ask, 'In this city of Brahman, this small lotus-like dwelling, and within it this small space—what is there that should be sought, what indeed should be known?'—one should reply thus.
As vast as this space is, so vast is the space within the heart. Both heaven and earth are contained within it, fire and air, sun and moon, lightning and stars; whatever is here and whatever is not—all this is contained within it.

If they should ask, 'If all this and all beings and all desires are contained in this city of Brahman, when old age comes upon it or it is destroyed, what remains then?'

One should reply: 'By old age, this does not age; by death, this is not killed. This is the true city of Brahman, in which desires are contained. This self is free from evil, ageless, deathless, sorrowless, free from hunger and thirst, whose desires are true, whose intentions are true. As here, people enter according to their conduct, so too, according to their desire, whatever end they desire—whatever country, whatever field—they attain that.'

Just as here, the world won by action perishes, so also there, the world won by merit perishes. But those who depart from here after knowing the self and these true desires, for them, in all worlds, there is freedom of movement. But those who depart from here without knowing the self and these true desires, for them, in all worlds, there is no freedom of movement.

If he desires the world of the ancestors, by his mere intention, his ancestors arise; with that world of the ancestors, he is fulfilled and exalted.

Now, if one desires the world of mothers, then by mere intention his mothers arise; endowed with the world of mothers, he is exalted.

Now, if one desires the world of food and drink, then by mere intention food and drink arise for him; endowed with the world of food and drink, he is exalted.
Now, if one desires the world of song and music, then by mere intention song and music arise for him; endowed with the world of song and music, he is exalted.
Now, if one desires the world of women, then by mere intention women arise for him; endowed with the world of women, he is exalted.
Whatever end one desires, whatever wish he wishes, that arises for him by mere intention; endowed with that, he is exalted.

These true desires are covered by the untrue; among these true ones, the untrue is the covering. Whoever departs from here without knowing these, does not obtain them for seeing here.

But whatever living beings are his here, and those who have departed, and whatever else he desires but does not obtain, all that he, going there, finds; for here his true desires are covered by the untrue. Just as people who do not know the place, passing again and again over a hidden treasure of gold, do not find it, so too all these beings, day by day, go to that world of Brahman but do not find it, being turned away by the untrue.
This indeed is the self within the heart; its precise name is 'heart'—for it is in the heart. Therefore, one who knows thus, day by day, attains the heavenly world.

And this serene one, having arisen from this body, attains the highest light and manifests in his own form—this is the self, he declared; this is the immortal, the fearless, this is Brahman. Of this Brahman, the name is 'Truth.'

Indeed, these are the three syllables: 'sat-ti-yam.' That which is 'sat' is the immortal; that which is 'ti' is the mortal; and by 'yam' he unites both. By this union, day by day, one who knows thus attains the heavenly world.
