They enter only this form, and from this form they arise.
He who knows this immortal essence, becoming one among the Sādhyas, with Brahman as his mouth, having seen this immortal, is satisfied; he enters only this form, and from this form he arises.
As long as the sun rises in the north and sets in the south, twice as much it rises upward and sets downward; so much is the dominion and sovereignty among the Sādhyas that he traverses.
Then, having risen upward from there, it neither rises nor sets, remaining alone in the middle; this is the verse.
There, it never sets nor rises at any time; O gods, by this truth, do not deprive me of Brahman.
Indeed, it neither rises nor sets for him; for him, there is only one day, who knows this Brahman-upanishad thus.
This Brahman was spoken by Brahmā to the progenitors, the progenitor to Manu, Manu to the offspring; this was spoken by Uddālaka Āruṇi to his eldest son.
Indeed, this Brahman should be told by the father to his eldest son, or to a devoted student.
It should not be told to anyone else, no matter if he were to give all this wealth, filled with water; only this is greater than that, only this is greater than that.
The Gāyatrī is indeed all this, whatever exists; speech is Gāyatrī, and speech is indeed all this, for it sings and protects.
That Gāyatrī is indeed this earth, upon which all beings are established; it does not exceed this.
That earth is indeed this body in a person; in this are the vital breaths established, and it does not exceed this.
That body in a person is indeed this, and within this person is the heart; in this are the vital breaths established, and it does not exceed this.
This Gāyatrī is four-footed and sixfold; thus it is celebrated in the verses.
Such is his greatness, and the Person is even greater than this; all beings are but one quarter of him, three quarters—immortal—are in heaven.
Indeed, that is Brahman; and truly, that which is the space outside the Person—this is that space outside the Person.
Indeed, this is that which is the space within the Person—this is that space within the Person.
Indeed, this is that which is the space within the heart; this is fullness, unmoving; whoever knows this attains fullness, unmoving prosperity.
In this heart are five divine openings; the one facing east is the breath, which is the eye, which is the sun; meditate on it as brilliance and as the eater of food—he who knows thus becomes radiant and an eater of food.
The one facing south is the vyāna, which is hearing, which is the moon; meditate on it as prosperity and fame—he who knows thus becomes prosperous and renowned.
The one facing west is the apāna, which is speech, which is fire; meditate on it as the brilliance of Brahman and as the eater of food—he who knows thus becomes radiant with the brilliance of Brahman and an eater of food.
The one facing north is the samāna, which is mind, which is rain; meditate on it as fame and clarity—he who knows thus becomes famous and clear.
The one facing upward is the udāna, which is air, which is space; meditate on it as strength and greatness—he who knows thus becomes strong and great.
These five are the Brahman-persons, the guardians of the gates of the world of heaven; whoever knows these five Brahman-persons, the guardians of the gates of the world of heaven, a hero is born in his family, and he attains the world of heaven—whoever knows these five Brahman-persons, the guardians of the gates of the world of heaven.
Now, that light which shines beyond this heaven, above all worlds, in the highest worlds—this indeed is that which is the light within this person.
His sight is that by which, touching this body, he perceives warmth; his hearing is that by which, with his ears covered, he hears a sound like thunder or like fire blazing—thus, meditate on this as both seen and heard; he who knows thus becomes endowed with vision and hearing.
All this, indeed, is Brahman; from it, all things are born, by it they are sustained, into it they merge—one should meditate with calmness; moreover, a person is made of intention; as is his intention in this world, so he becomes after departing from here; therefore, one should form an intention.
He has breath as his body, is radiant in form, true in will, space as his self, does all actions, desires all, possesses all scents, all tastes, and is silent, without pride.
This self of mine within the heart is smaller than a grain of rice, or barley, or mustard seed, or millet, or the kernel of millet; this self of mine within the heart is greater than the earth, greater than the atmosphere, greater than the sky, greater than all these worlds.
He does all actions, desires all, possesses all scents, all tastes, and is silent, without pride; this self of mine within the heart is Brahman; after departing from here, I shall become that—whoever among us has no doubt regarding this, for him, said Śāṇḍilya, there is no uncertainty.
