अथ हैनमूषस्तश्चाक्रायणः पप्रच्छ॥ याज्ञवल्क्येति होवाच, यत्साक्षादपरोक्षाद्ब्रह्म यआत्मासर्वान्तरः तं मे व्याचक्ष्वेति॥ एषत आत्मासर्वान्तरः॥ कतमो, याज्ञवल्क्य, सर्वान्तरो॥ यः प्राणेन प्राणिति, सत आत्मासर्वान्तरो; योऽपानेनापानिति, सत आत्मासर्वान्तरो; योव्यानेन व्यनिति, सत आत्मासर्वान्तरो; यउदानेनोदनिति, सत आत्मासर्वान्तरो॥ यः समानेन समनिति, सत आत्मासर्वन्तर। . ॥. एषत आत्मासर्वान्तरः
Then Uṣasta Cākrāyaṇa questioned him: 'Yājñavalkya,' he said, 'Explain to me that Brahman which is directly perceived, not indirect, that Self which is the innermost of all.' 'This is that Self, the innermost of all.' 'Which, Yājñavalkya, is the innermost of all?' 'That which breathes with the breath, that is the innermost Self; that which breathes with the downward breath, that is the innermost Self; that which breathes with the diffused breath, that is the innermost Self; that which breathes with the upward breath, that is the innermost Self; that which breathes with the equalizing breath, that is the innermost Self.' 'This is that Self, the innermost of all.'
सहोवाचोषस्तश्चाक्रायणोः यथा वैब्रूयादसौगौः असावश्व इति एवमेवैतद्व्यपदिष्टं भवति॥ यदेवसाक्षादपरोक्षाद्ब्रह्म यआत्मासर्वान्तरः तं मे व्याचक्ष्वेति॥ एषत आत्मासर्वान्तरः॥ कतमो, याज्ञवल्क्य, सर्वान्तरो॥ नदृष्टेर्द्रष्टारं पश्येः नश्रुतेः श्रोतारँ शृणुया; नमतेर्मन्तारं मन्वीथा, नविज्ञातेर्विज्ञातारं विजानीया॥ एषत आत्मासर्वान्तरो॥ अतोऽन्यदार्तं॥ ततो होषस्तश्चाक्रायण उपरराम॥ 6
Uṣasta Cākrāyaṇa said: 'Just as one would say, "That is a cow, that is a horse," so is this designated. Explain to me that Brahman which is directly perceived, not indirect, that Self which is the innermost of all.' 'This is that Self, the innermost of all.' 'Which, Yājñavalkya, is the innermost of all?' 'You cannot see the seer of seeing; you cannot hear the hearer of hearing; you cannot think the thinker of thinking; you cannot know the knower of knowing. This is that Self, the innermost of all. Everything else is afflicted.' Then Uṣasta Cākrāyaṇa ceased questioning.

अथैनमूद्दालक आरुणिः पप्रच्छः याज्ञवल्क्येति होवाच, मद्रेष्ववसाम पतङ्चलस्य काप्यस्य गृहेषु, यज्ञमधीयानाः॥ तस्यासीद्भार्यागन्धर्वगृहीता॥ तमपृच्छामः कोऽसीति॥ सोऽब्रवीत् कबन्ध अथर्वणइति
Then Uddālaka Āruṇi questioned him: 'Yājñavalkya,' he said, 'We stayed among the Madras in the house of Patañcala Kāpya, studying the sacrifice. He had a wife possessed by a Gandharva. We asked him, "Who are you?" He replied, "I am Kabandha Atharvaṇa."'
सोऽब्रवीत्पतङ्चलं काप्यं याज्ञिकाँश्चः वेत्थ नुत्वं, काप्य, तत्सूत्रं यस्मिन्नयं च लोकः परश्च लोकः सर्वाणि च भूतानि संदृब्धानि भवन्तीति॥ सोऽब्रवीत्पतङ्चलः काप्योः नाहं तद् भगवन् वेदेति
Kabandha Atharvaṇa said to Patañcala Kāpya and the sacrificers: 'Do you know, Kāpya, that thread by which this world, the other world, and all beings are held together?' Patañcala Kāpya replied: 'I do not know that, revered one.'
सोऽब्रवीत्पतङ्चलं काप्यं याज्ञिकाँश्चः वेत्थ नुत्वं, काप्य, तमन्तर्यामिणं, यइमं च लोकं परं च लोकँ सर्वाणि च भूतान्यन्तरो यमयतीति॥ सोऽब्रवीत्पतङ्चलः काप्योः नाहं तं, भगवन् वेदेति

सोऽब्रवीत्पतङ्चलं काप्यं याज्ञिकाँश्चः योवैतत् काप्य, सूत्रं विद्यात्तं चान्तर्यामिणँ, सब्रह्मवित् सलोकवित् सदेववित् सवेदवित् सयज्ञवित् . सभूतवित् सआत्मवित् ससर्वविदिति तेभ्योऽब्रवीत्॥ तदहं वेद॥ तच्चेत्त्वं, याज्ञवल्क्य, सूत्रमविद्वाँस् तं चान्तर्यामिणं ब्रह्मगवीरुदजसे, मूर्धाते विपतिष्यतीति
Kabandha Atharvaṇa said to Patañcala Kāpya and the sacrificers: 'Whoever knows, Kāpya, that thread and that inner controller, is a knower of Brahman, a knower of worlds, a knower of gods, a knower of Vedas, a knower of sacrifices, a knower of beings, a knower of the Self, a knower of all.' He said to them: 'I know that.' 'If you, Yājñavalkya, do not know that thread and that inner controller, and claim to be a knower of Brahman, your head will fall off.'
वेद वाअहं, गौतम, तत्सूत्रं तं चान्तर्यामिणमिति॥ योवाइदं कश्च ब्रूयाद् वेद वेदेति॥ यथा वेत्थ, तथा ब्रूहीति
Yājñavalkya said: 'I know, Gautama, that thread and that inner controller.' 'If anyone says, "I know," let him speak as he knows.' 'Speak as you know.'
वायुर्वै, गौतम, तत्सूत्रं; वायुना वै, गौतम, सूत्रेणायं च लोकः परश्च लोकः सर्वाणि च भूतानि संदृब्धानि भवन्ति॥ तस्माद्वै, गौतम, पुरुषं प्रेतमाहुः व्यस्रँसिषतास्याङ्गानीति; वायुना हि, गौतम, सूत्रेण सम्दृब्धानि भवन्तीति॥ एवमेवैतद् . याज्ञवल्क्यान्तर्यामिणं ब्रूहीति
'Air, Gautama, is that thread; by air, Gautama, as the thread, this world, the other world, and all beings are held together. Therefore, Gautama, when a person dies, they say, "His limbs are loosened." For by air, Gautama, as the thread, all are held together. Thus it is. Yājñavalkya, speak of the inner controller.'
यः पृथिव्यां तिष्ठन्पृथिव्याअन्तरो, यं पृथिवीनवेद, यस्य पृथिवीशरीरं, यः पृथिवीमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands within the earth, yet is other than the earth, whom the earth does not know, whose body is the earth, who controls the earth from within, he is your Self, the inner controller, immortal.
योऽप्सुतिष्ठन्नद्भ्योऽन्तरो, यमापो नविदुः यस्यापः शरीरं, योऽपोऽन्तरो यमयति स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands within the waters, yet is other than the waters, whom the waters do not know, whose body is the waters, who controls the waters from within, he is your Self, the inner controller, immortal.
योऽग्नौतिष्ठन्नग्नेरन्तरो, यमग्निर्नवेद, यस्याग्निः शरीरं, योऽग्निमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands within fire, yet is other than fire, whom fire does not know, whose body is fire, who controls fire from within, he is your Self, the inner controller, immortal.
योऽन्तरिक्षे तिष्ठन्नन्तरिक्षादन्तरो, यमन्तरिक्षं नवेद, यस्यान्तरिक्षँ शरीरं, योऽन्तरिक्षमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands within the intermediate space, yet is other than the intermediate space, whom the intermediate space does not know, whose body is the intermediate space, who controls the intermediate space from within, he is your Self, the inner controller, immortal.
योवायौतिष्ठन्वायोरन्तरो, यं वायुर्नवेद, यस्य वायुः शरीरं, योवायुमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands within air, yet is other than air, whom air does not know, whose body is air, who controls air from within, he is your Self, the inner controller, immortal.
. यो दिवि तिष्ठन्दिवोऽन्तरो, यं द्यौर्न वेद, यस्य द्यौः शरीरं, यो दिवमन्तरो यमयति एष त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in the sky, who is within the sky, whom the sky does not know, whose body is the sky, who from within controls the sky—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
यआदित्येतिष्ठन्नादित्यादन्तरो, यमादित्योनवेद, यस्यादित्यः शरीरं, यआदित्यमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in the sun, who is within the sun, whom the sun does not know, whose body is the sun, who from within controls the sun—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
यश्चन्द्रतारकेतिष्ठङ्चन्द्रतारकादन्तरो, यं चन्द्रतारकं नवेद, यस्य चन्द्रतारकँ शरीरं, यश्चन्द्रतारकमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in the moon and stars, who is within the moon and stars, whom the moon and stars do not know, whose body is the moon and stars, who from within controls the moon and stars—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
. य आकाशे तिष्ठन्नाकाशादन्तरो, यमाकाशो न वेद, यस्याकाशः शरीरं, य आकाशमन्तरो यमयति एष त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in space, who is within space, whom space does not know, whose body is space, who from within controls space—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
योदिक्षुतिष्ठन्दिग्भ्योऽन्तरो, यं दिशो नविदुः यस्य दिशः शरीरं, योदिशोऽन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः॥ 15/ ॥ योविद्युति तिष्ठन्विद्युतोऽन्तरो, यं विद्युन्नवेद, यस्य विद्युच्छरीरं, योविद्युतोऽन्तरो यमयति, सत आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः॥ 16/ ॥ योस्तनयित्नौतिष्ठन्स्तनयित्नोरन्तरो, यँ स्तनयित्नुर्नवेद, यस्य स्तनयित्नुः शरीरं, योस्तनयित्नोरन्तरो यमयति, सत आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः॥ 17/ ॥ योसर्वेषु लोकेषु तिष्ठन्सर्वेभ्यो लोकेभ्योऽन्तरो, यँ सर्वे लोकानविदुः यस्य सर्वे लोकाः शरीरं, योसर्वेभ्यो लोकेभ्योऽन्तरो यमयति, सत आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः॥ 18/ ॥ योसर्वेषु वेदेषु तिष्ठन्सर्वेभ्यो वेदेष्वन्तरो, यँ सर्वे वेदा नविदुः यस्य सर्वे वेदाः शरीरं, योसर्वेभ्यो वेदेभ्योऽन्तरो यमयति, सत आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः॥ 19/ ॥ योसर्वेषु यज्ञेषु तिष्ठन्सर्वेभ्यो यज्ञेभ्योऽन्तरो, यँ सर्वे यज्ञानविदुः यस्य सर्वे यज्ञाः शरीरं, योसर्वेभ्यो यज्ञेभ्योऽन्तरो यमयति, सत आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in the directions, who is within the directions, whom the directions do not know, whose body is the directions, who from within controls the directions—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal. He who stands in lightning, who is within lightning, whom lightning does not know, whose body is lightning, who from within controls lightning—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal. He who stands in thunder, who is within thunder, whom thunder does not know, whose body is thunder, who from within controls thunder—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal. He who stands in all worlds, who is within all worlds, whom all worlds do not know, whose body is all worlds, who from within controls all worlds—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal. He who stands in all the Vedas, who is within all the Vedas, whom all the Vedas do not know, whose body is all the Vedas, who from within controls all the Vedas—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal. He who stands in all sacrifices, who is within all sacrifices, whom all sacrifices do not know, whose body is all sacrifices, who from within controls all sacrifices—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
यः सर्वेषु भूतेषु तिष्ठन्त्सर्वेभ्यो भूतेभ्योऽन्तरो, यँ सर्वाणि भूतानि नविदुः यस्य सर्वाणि भुतानि शरीरं, यः सर्वाणि भूतान्यन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृत॥ इत्य् उ एवाधिभूतम् . अथाध्यात्मम्
He who stands in all beings, who is within all beings, whom all beings do not know, whose body is all beings, who from within controls all beings—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal. Thus far, the teaching concerning the elements. Now, concerning the self.
यः प्राणेतिष्ठन्प्राणादन्तरो, यं प्राणोनवेद, यस्य प्राणः शरीरं, यः प्राणमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in the breath, who is within the breath, whom the breath does not know, whose body is the breath, who from within controls the breath—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
योवाचितिष्ठन्वाचोऽन्तरो, यं वाङ् नवेद, यस्य वाक्षरीरं, योवाचमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in speech, who is within speech, whom speech does not know, whose body is speech, who from within controls speech—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
यश्चक्षुषि तिष्ठङ्चक्षुषोऽन्तरो, यं चक्षुर्नवेद, यस्य चक्षुः शरीरं, यश्चक्षुरन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in the eye, who is within the eye, whom the eye does not know, whose body is the eye, who from within controls the eye—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
यः श्रोत्रे तिष्ठङ्छ्रोत्रादन्तरो, यँ श्रोत्रं नवेद, यस्य श्रोत्रँ शरीरं, यः श्रोत्रमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in the ear, who is within the ear, whom the ear does not know, whose body is the ear, who from within controls the ear—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
योमनसि तिष्ठन्मनसोऽन्तरो, यं मनो नवेद, यस्य मनः शरीरं, योमनोऽन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in the mind, who is within the mind, whom the mind does not know, whose body is the mind, who from within controls the mind—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
यस् त्वचि तिष्ठँस् त्वचोऽन्तरो, यं त्वङ् नवेद, यस्य त्वक्षरीरं, यस् त्वचमन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in the skin, who is within the skin, whom the skin does not know, whose body is the skin, who from within controls the skin—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
. यो विज्ञाने तिष्ठन्विज्ञानादन्तरो, यं विज्ञानं न वेद, यस्य विज्ञानँ शरीरं, यो विज्ञानमन्तरो यमयति एष त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in knowledge, who is within knowledge, whom knowledge does not know, whose body is knowledge, who from within controls knowledge—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
यस् तेजसि तिष्ठँस् तेजसोऽन्तरो, यं तेजो नवेद, यस्य तेजः शरीरं, यस् तेजोऽन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in light, who is within light, whom light does not know, whose body is light, who from within controls light—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
यस् तमसि तिष्ठँस् तमसोऽन्तरो, यं तमो नवेद, यस्य तमः शरीरं, यस् तमोऽन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in darkness, who is within darkness, whom darkness does not know, whose body is darkness, who from within controls darkness—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
योरेतसि तिष्ठँ रेतसोऽन्तरो, यं रेतो नवेद, यस्य रेतः शरीरं, योरेतोऽन्तरो यमयति, स त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः॥ 30/ ॥ यआत्मनि तिष्ठन्नात्मनोऽन्तरो, यमात्मानवेद, यस्यात्माशरीरं, यआत्मान्तरो यमयति, सत आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
He who stands in seed, who is within seed, whom seed does not know, whose body is seed, who from within controls seed—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal. He who stands in the self, who is within the self, whom the self does not know, whose body is the self, who from within controls the self—he is your Self, the inner controller, the immortal.
Then Gārgī Vācaknavī questioned him: 'Yājñavalkya,' she said, 'That in which all this is woven, both warp and woof, in what are the waters woven?' 'In air, Gārgī.' 'In what is air woven?' 'In space, Gārgī.' 'In what is space woven?' 'In the intermediate worlds, Gārgī.' 'In what are the intermediate worlds woven?' 'In the heavenly worlds, Gārgī.' 'In what are the heavenly worlds woven?' 'In the worlds of the sun, Gārgī.' 'In what are the worlds of the sun woven?' 'In the worlds of the moon, Gārgī.' 'In what are the worlds of the moon woven?' 'In the worlds of the stars, Gārgī.' 'In what are the worlds of the stars woven?' 'In the worlds of the gods, Gārgī.' 'In what are the worlds of the gods woven?' 'In the worlds of the Gandharvas, Gārgī.' 'In what are the worlds of the Gandharvas woven?' 'In the worlds of Prajāpati, Gārgī.' 'In what are the worlds of Prajāpati woven?' 'In the worlds of Brahman, Gārgī.' 'In what are the worlds of Brahman woven?' He said: 'Gārgī, do not ask further, lest your head fall off. You are asking questions beyond the proper limit, in the realm of the gods.' 'Gārgī, do not ask further.' Then Gārgī Vācaknavī ceased questioning.
