Hear now the glories of the Supreme Being, whose qualities and manifestations are sung by sages and revered by the wise. He is the supporter of Brahman, the creator of Brahma, and also Brahma itself—the Absolute, who increases the power of Brahman. He knows Brahman intimately, belongs to the Brāhmaṇas, is endowed with Brahman, and is the knower of the Veda, beloved by the Brāhmaṇas. His stride is vast, his deeds are mighty, his brilliance is incomparable. He is the great serpent, the performer of great sacrifices, the great sacrificer, the great sacrifice itself, and the great oblation. Worthy of praise and fond of hymns, he is himself the hymn, the act of praise, and the one who praises. He delights in battle, is complete and the fulfiller of all, virtuous and renowned for virtue, free from disease. Swift as the mind, he sanctifies holy places, is the source and bestower of wealth and treasures. As the son of Vasudeva, he is the essence of wealth, noble-minded, and the sacrificial offering. He is the path to the good, honored by the virtuous, existence itself, true being, and the supreme refuge of the righteous. He is chief of the Shura Sena clan, foremost among the Yadus, the true abode, and the one who makes the Yamuna auspicious. He is the dwelling place of all beings, the son of Vasudeva, the support of all life, fire itself, destroyer and giver of pride, proud and difficult to conquer, ever undefeated. His form is the universe, vast and radiant, yet formless. He has many forms, is unmanifest, possesses a hundred forms and a hundred faces. He is one and many; he is all, he is who, he is what, he is that supreme state. He is the friend and lord of the worlds, Mādhava, affectionate to his devotees. Golden in color, with limbs like gold and adorned with sandalwood, he is the destroyer of heroes, unequalled, empty, drinker of clarified butter, unmoving and moving. Without pride, he bestows honor and is worthy of honor. He is lord and supporter of the three worlds, of good intellect, born of intelligence, fortunate, whose wisdom is truth, and supporter of the earth. He showers radiance, bears brilliance, and is foremost among those who wield weapons. He restrains and subdues, is swift, with many horns, and the elder brother of Gada. He has four forms, four arms, four manifestations, and four paths; a fourfold nature and existence, knower of the four Vedas, and the one-footed. He is the whirling cycle, whose essence does not turn back, unconquerable and insurmountable; hard to attain and approach, the fortress difficult to dwell in, destroyer of formidable enemies. Of auspicious form, the essence of the worlds, of fine thread, increaser of the thread; performer of Indra’s deeds and accomplished acts, knower of accomplished scriptures. He is the origin, beautiful and charming, whose navel is like a gem, with lovely eyes, the sun, giver of nourishment, horned, victorious, conqueror of all, and who knows everything. He is like a golden drop, unshakable, lord of all masters of speech, the great lake, the great pit, the great element, the great treasure. He delights in the earth, grants happiness, is pure like jasmine, the rain-giver, purifier, wind, whose desires and form are immortal, all-knowing, and facing everywhere. He is easily attained, of excellent vows, accomplished, conqueror and tormentor of enemies, the banyan tree, the cluster fig tree, the sacred fig tree, destroyer of Chanura and Andhaka. His radiance is a thousandfold, he has seven tongues, is kindled in seven ways, has seven vehicles; formless, sinless, inconceivable, creator and destroyer of fear. He is subtle, vast, slender, and massive; bearer of qualities yet beyond them, the great one; unsupported, self-supported, self-faced, ancient ancestor, increaser of the lineage. He bears the burden, known as the yogi, lord of yogis, giver of all desires; the place of rest, ascetic, emaciated, golden-winged, whose vehicle is the wind. He wields the bow, is the knowledge of the bow, the staff, the subduer, self-control; unconquered, all-enduring, restrainer, unrestrained, and infallible. Steadfast in virtue, endowed with purity, truthful, devoted to the path of truth and righteousness; intent, worthy of affection and honor, does what is dear, increases love. He moves through the sky, is radiant and splendid, the enjoyer of offerings, all-pervading; he is the sun, the shining one, the illuminator, the begetter, whose eyes are the sun. Endless, the enjoyer and experiencer, giver of happiness, born in many ways, the eldest; never despondent, always patient, foundation of the worlds, and wondrous. Eternal, most ancient among the eternal, Kapila, undying, giver of well-being, doer of good, auspiciousness itself, enjoyer and giver of auspicious gifts. He is not fierce, wears earrings, bears the discus, strides with power, commands with strength; transcends and endures sound, is cool, and brings the night. Not cruel, charming, skillful, dexterous, best among the forgiving; supreme in knowledge, free from fear, whose praise and hearing are meritorious. Deliverer, destroyer of evil deeds, pure, dispeller of bad dreams; slayer of heroes, protector, saintly, giver of life, ever steadfast. He has infinite forms, endless glory, conquered anger, removes fear; four-sided, profound in essence, the directions, giver of directions, and the very directions themselves. Without beginning, support of earth and heavens, embodiment of prosperity, exceedingly heroic, adorned with beautiful armlets; source of all, origin of beings and their births, formidable, of terrifying valor. He is foundation and abode, sustainer, whose smile is like a blossoming flower, ever wakeful; ascending upward, following the path of righteousness, giver of life, the sacred syllable Om, and the supreme reward. He is the standard of measure, seat and sustainer of life, essence of life; ultimate reality, knower of reality, the one self, transcending birth, death, and old age. He is the earth, the heavens, and the highest realm; the tree of refuge, deliverer, sun, great grandsire; sacrifice, lord of sacrifice, performer of sacrifice, parts and vehicle of sacrifice. He upholds and performs the sacrifice, is the sacrificer, enjoys the offering, is the means of sacrifice; brings sacrifice to completion, is the secret of sacrifice, both food and eater of food. His womb is his own self, self-born, the one who dug out the earth, the song of the Sāma Veda; delight of Devakī, creator, lord of the earth, destroyer of sins. He bears the conch, wields the sword Nandaka, holds the discus, is armed with the bow Śārṅga, bears the mace; with the wheel as his weapon, unshakable, armed with all weapons. Armed with all weapons—Om, obeisance!—wearer of the forest garland, bearer of the mace, wielder of the bow Śārṅga, holder of the conch, bearer of the discus and sword Nandaka; the glorious Nārāyaṇa, Viṣṇu, Vāsudeva—may he protect us.
