In the sacred Śiva Sahasranāma, the glory of the Supreme Lord unfolds in a tapestry of divine attributes and cosmic deeds. He is eternal, self-reliant, and the master of gods and demons alike, standing as the chief among the celestials with united, strong arms. Invincible and steadfast, he is the tawny remover whose form pervades the whirling worlds, shining as the best among the radiant beings and guiding all upon the great path. He is the remover of heads and the One who reflects, marked by every auspicious sign. Imperishable, he is the charioteer and the master of all yogas, possessing immense strength. He embodies the Veda in its entirety and transcends even the Veda, revered as the deity of sacred fords and the mighty charioteer. He is both devoid of life and the giver of life, the very mantra, blessed with auspicious vision and exceedingly severe in discipline. Abundant in jewels, with red limbs, he knows the depths of the great ocean. He is both the root and vastness—immortal, manifest and unmanifest, and the repository of austerity. He who ascends and causes ascent upholds virtue and is renowned like an army, like a great age, a master of yoga, maker of ages, and remover of affliction. His form embodies the ages, vast and impenetrable, and he is destruction itself. He establishes justice, stands as the foundation, wise and steadfast as a mountain. Adorned with many garlands, including a great garland, he is the moon, with eyes that are the sun and moon. Vast and saline, he is a well, the pair of ages, and the one whose arising bears fruit. He bears three eyes, limbs marked by poison, adorned with jewels and matted hair. He is the dot and visarga, has an auspicious face, is an arrow, armed with all weapons, and enduring. He is the offering, born of happiness, bearer of sweet fragrance and the great bow, guardian of fragrance, divine originator, and doer of all actions. He is the churner, abundant like the wind, all-encompassing and all-seeing. He is Tala, Tāla, the hand cymbal, whose upper body is powerful, and the great one. He is the umbrella, the excellent umbrella, renowned, the world, refuge of all, and the order. He appears shaven-headed, deformed, misshapen, staff-bearing, water-pot-bearing, and as the transformer. He is Haryakṣa, the directions, wielder of the thunderbolt, hundred-tongued, thousand-footed, thousand-headed, lord and embodiment of all gods, and the teacher. With a thousand arms and all limbs, he is the giver of refuge and creator of all worlds. He is pure, the three-syllabled mantra, the youngest, dark and tawny. He is the creator of Brahma’s staff, possesses weapons like the hundred-killer, noose, and spear, and is the womb of the lotus, the great womb, the womb of Brahma, born from water. Radiant, creator of Brahma, associated with Brahma, knower of Brahma, he is the path of the Brahmin, of infinite forms and manifold selves, fiercely brilliant and self-born. He is the upward-moving soul, lord of creatures, swift as the wind, speed of the mind, sandal-scented, tip of the lotus stalk, surpassing fragrance, and the man. He wears a great garland of karṇikāra flowers, crowned with blue, bearer of the Pināka bow, husband and beloved of Umā, bearer of the river Jāhnavī, consort of Umā. He is the best, the boar, giver of boons, most excellent, mighty-voiced, graceful, the subduer, destroyer of enemies, white and tawny. His essence is golden, the supreme self, pure-hearted, sustainer of primordial matter, soul pleased, facing all directions, three-eyed, foundation of righteousness, and the choicest. His self pervades the moving and unmoving, subtle and immortal, lord of the sacred bull, sage among Sādhyas, Vasus, and Ādityas, radiant, sun, and immortal. He is Vyāsa, creation, concise summary, expansion, change, man, the season, year, month, fortnight, and completion of enumeration. He is the divisions of time—kalā, kāṣṭhā, lava, mātrā, muhūrta, day, night, and moment; the field of the universe, seed of all beings, primal liṅga, and origin of all emergence. He is existence and non-existence, manifest and unmanifest, father, mother, grandfather, gate to heaven, gate to beings, gate to liberation, and the highest realm. He is nirvāṇa and delight, the world of Brahma, the supreme path, creator and refuge of gods and demons. He is their teacher, worshipped by them, the great measure among them, and shelter of their hosts. He is overseer and foremost among gods and asuras, god above all gods, divine sage, and bestower of boons to gods and asuras. He is lord of gods and asuras, all-pervading, great lord, composed of all gods, inconceivable, soul of divine powers, and self-born. He is the sprouter, the one of three strides, healer, stainless, taintless, immortal, worthy of praise, lord of elephants, tiger, lion among gods, and bull among men. Wise, foremost and best, subtle, composed of all gods, essence of austerity, well-equipped, splendid, wielder of the thunderbolt, origin of spears, imperishable. He is the hidden one, beloved, origin of himself, pure, purifier of all, horned, fond of peaks, tawny-colored, king of kings, free from disease. Delightful, lord of gods, final rest, means to all accomplishments, whose eye is on the forehead, god of the universe, golden-hued, radiant with Brahman. Lord of immovable beings, increaser of disciplined senses, accomplished in purpose, perfection itself, inconceivable, true in vow, and pure. He is lord of vows, supreme Brahman, highest goal of devotees, bestower of grace, liberated, radiant with liberation, glorious, increaser of prosperity, and the universe itself. Thus is revealed the Śrī Śiva Sahasranāma Stotram – Uttara Pīṭhika, the fruit of recitation.
