He is the imperishable, the supreme Brahman, whose power is boundless and whose very being is the wheel of time itself. He is both justice and injustice, pure in soul, immaculate, worthy of the highest honor, and the one who moves through the cycles of coming and going. His grace is immense, his presence auspicious, and he appears as a mirror reflecting all. He conquers enemies effortlessly, is the creator of the Vedas and mantras, wise beyond measure, and the crusher of foes in battle. He abides in the vastness of great clouds, his nature exceedingly fierce and enchanting. His flames are fire, his blaze immense, wrapped in thick smoke. He is both the oblation and the offering itself. Virile and beneficent, he shines perpetually, his banner streaming with smoke. Dark-hued, he is deeply attached to his devotees, beautiful and unobstructed in all he does. He bestows well-being and is well-being itself, the possessor and giver of shares, the very light that supports all. He is both the foundation and the great body, ever devoted to the cosmic womb. Sometimes dark in complexion, sometimes golden, he is the sense within every embodied being. His feet, hands, and body are vast, his fame resounding everywhere. His head is immense, his measure unfathomable, his eyes vast as the heavens. He is the very abode of night, the great ender, with enormous ears, lips, and jaws. His nose, neck, and throat are mighty, and he partakes of the cremation ground. His chest and breast are vast, he is the inner self of all, and the refuge of wild creatures. He is pendant, with hanging lips, the great illusion, and the ocean of milk. His teeth, fangs, tongue, and mouth are immense. His nails and hair are great, his matted locks thick and long. Gracious and trustworthy, he is the support even of the mighty mountain. He is both affectionate and unaffectionate, unconquered, the great sage. Sometimes he appears as a tree, with the banner of a tree; he is fire and the bearer of the wind. He is Gaṇḍalī, the support of Mount Meru, and the lord of the gods themselves. His head is the Atharva Veda, his mouth the Sāma Veda, and his eyes countless Ṛg Vedas. The Yajur Veda forms his arms and feet; he is hidden yet manifest, ever-moving, his purpose unfailing. Gracious and approachable, his vision is beautiful. He is always helpful, beloved by all, golden-hued and radiant. He is the navel, the giver of joy, existence itself, the lord dwelling in the lotus, steadfast and unwavering. He stands first among those who wield twelve weapons, the very embodiment of sacrifice, ever absorbed in sacrificial rites. He is night, the age of strife, time itself, the makara, and even time worships him. Surrounded by attendants and hosts, he is the charioteer of spirits’ vehicles. He dwells in ashes, protects ashes, is himself turned to ashes, and is both tree and multitude. Protector of the worlds, yet beyond them, his soul is vast and worshipped by all. He is pure, thrice-pure, immaculate, accomplished, and served by all beings. He abides in hermitages, established in sacred rites, supreme in the mind of the cosmic artisan. His branches are vast, his lips copper-red, his eyes like lotuses, unwavering in his gaze. He is Kapila, tawny-hued and pure, the very life and the highest. He is Gandharva, Aditi, Tārkṣya, easily known and eloquent. His weapon is the battle-axe; he is the imitator, the true friend, the player of the Tumbavīṇā, of great wrath, with upward-flowing seed, and lord of the waters. Fierce, he is the progenitor of lineages and the lineage itself, the sound of the flute, blameless. He assumes all forms, master of illusion, a good friend, wind, and fire. He is bondage, the maker of bondage, and the liberator from good bonds. He is the enemy of sacrifice, the foe of desire, great-fanged and mighty-armed. Though reviled in many ways as Śarva, he is Śaṅkara, the beneficent one, the impoverished one, the lord of the immortals, the great god, the god of all, and destroyer of the enemies of the gods. He is Ahirbudhnya, resembling the wind, wise, the recipient of offerings, Hari, Ajaikapāda, bearer of skulls, conqueror of Triśaṅku, and Śiva. He is Dhanvantari, Dhūmaketu, Skanda, and Vaiśravaṇa; he is Dhātā, Śakra, Viṣṇu, Mitra, Tvaṣṭṛ, Dhruva, and Dhara. He is Prabhāva, all-pervading, Vāyu, Aryaman, Savitṛ, Ravi, Uṣaṅgu, Vidhātā, Māndhātā, and the creator of beings. He is all-pervading, manifestor of colors, bestower of all desirable qualities. He is Padmanabha, the great womb, moon-faced, the wind, and fire. Powerful yet tranquil, ancient, with an auspicious beak, he is the doer of actions, dwelling among the Kurus, having become the Kurus themselves, and the medicine of virtues. He is the abode of all, the wanderer on darbha grass, the lord of all beings, god of gods, attached to happiness, existent and non-existent, the knower of all jewels. He dwells on Mount Kailasa and takes refuge in the Himalaya, remover and creator of lineages, possessing great knowledge and immense generosity. He is merchant, carpenter, tree, vakula tree, sandalwood, and shelter; strong-necked, broad-shouldered, restless, and the great medicine. He is the accomplisher of success, the one who has attained success, the master of meter and grammar; his roar is like a lion’s, his fangs lion-like, his gait and mount that of a lion. He is the essence-soul, the time of the world, steadfast, the tree for the good of the world; deer-marked, with nine-spoked form, bannered and fostering. He is the abode and lord of beings, day and night, blameless. He carries all beings, is their abode, all-pervading, the origin, unfailing, restrained, swift as a horse, the sustenance, and the bearer of breath. Steadfast, wise, skillful, honored, lord of the ages, protector of cows, master of herds and village, clad in cowhide, remover of darkness. Golden-armed, guardian of caves, among those who enter, formidable enemy, great joy, conqueror of desire, master of the senses. Of Gandhara, well-clad, devoted to austerity, delight of men, he is a great singer and dancer, served by hosts of apsaras. He is the great-bannered one, the great support, accompanied by many, ever-moving. He is to be revealed, the command, and the bringer of all fragrant delights. He is the gateway and deliverer, the wind and the enclosure, lord of those who move in the sky. He is union, increaser, aged and exceedingly aged, surpassing all in virtues.
