Shiva Sahasranama
पक्षी च पक्षरूपश्च अतिदीप्तो विशां पतिः । उन्मादो मदनः कामो ह्यश्वत्थोऽर्थकरो यशः ॥ ४० ॥
He is the bird, he has the form of a bird, he is exceedingly radiant, the lord of the worlds; he is madness, the god of love, desire, the holy fig tree, the giver of meaning, and fame.
वामदेवश्च वामश्च प्राग्दक्षिणश्च वामनः । सिद्धयोगी महर्षिश्च सिद्धार्थः सिद्धसाधकः ॥ ४१ ॥
He is Vāmadeva, he is gentle, he is the east, the south, and the dwarf; he is the accomplished yogi, the great sage, one whose aims are fulfilled, and the accomplisher of perfection.
भिक्षुश्च भिक्षुरूपश्च विपणो मृदुरव्ययः । महासेनो विशाखश्च षष्टिभागो गवां पतिः ॥ ४२ ॥
He is the mendicant, he takes the form of a mendicant, he is the merchant, gentle, imperishable; he is Mahāsena, Viśākha, the sixth part, and the lord of cows.
वज्रहस्तश्च विष्कम्भी चमूस्तम्भन एव च । वृत्तावृत्तकरस्तालो मधुर्मधुकलोचनः ॥ ४३ ॥
He holds the thunderbolt in his hand, he is the supporter, the one who restrains armies; he is the doer of right and wrong, the palm tree, sweet, and has honey-like eyes.
वाचस्पत्यो वाजसनो नित्यमाश्रमपूजितः । [नित्यमाश्रितपूजितः] ब्रह्मचारी लोकचारी सर्वचारी विचारवित् ॥ ४४ ॥
Master of speech, possessor of strength, ever worshipped in hermitages, ever worshipped by those who seek refuge, celibate, moving among the worlds, moving everywhere, knower of all inquiry.
ईशान ईश्वरः कालो निशाचारी पिनाकभृत् । निमित्तस्थो निमित्तं च नन्दिर्नन्दिकरो हरिः ॥ ४५ ॥
Lord of the northeast, supreme ruler, time itself, wanderer of the night, bearer of the Pinaka bow, abiding in causes, himself the cause, Nandi, bestower of joy, remover of affliction, lion, destroyer, time, creator, and grandsire.
नन्दीश्वरश्च नन्दी च नन्दनो नन्दिवर्धनः । भगहारी निहन्ता च कालो ब्रह्मा पितामहः ॥ ४६ ॥
Lord of Nandi, Nandi himself, source of joy, increaser of joy, remover of fortune, destroyer, time, Brahma, and the grandsire.
चतुर्मुखो महालिङ्गश्चारुलिङ्गस्तथैव च । लिङ्गाध्यक्षः सुराध्यक्षो योगाध्यक्षो युगावहः ॥ ४७ ॥
Four-faced one, great emblem, beautiful emblem, overseer of the emblem, chief of the gods, chief of yogis, bringer of the ages.
बीजाध्यक्षो बीजकर्ता अध्यात्मानुगतो बलः । इतिहासः सकल्पश्च गौतमोऽथ निशाकरः ॥ ४८ ॥
He is the overseer of seeds, the creator of seeds, the one who follows the inner self, strength itself; he is history, resolve, Gautama, and the maker of night.
दम्भो ह्यदम्भो वैदम्भो वश्यो वशकरः कलिः । लोककर्ता पशुपतिर्महाकर्ता ह्यनौषधः ॥ ४९ ॥
He is hypocrisy, yet free from hypocrisy, the semblance of hypocrisy; he is subject to control, the controller, the age of strife; creator of worlds, lord of beings, the great creator, and without remedy.
अक्षरं परमं ब्रह्म बलवच्छक्र एव च । नीतिर्ह्यनीतिः शुद्धात्मा शुद्धो मान्यो गतागतः ॥ ५० ॥
He is the imperishable, the supreme Brahman, powerful, and the very wheel; he is justice and injustice, pure in soul, pure, worthy of honor, and the one who comes and goes.
बहुप्रसादः सुस्वप्नो दर्पणोऽथ त्वमित्रजित् । वेदकारो मन्त्रकारो विद्वान् समरमर्दनः ॥ ५१ ॥
He is greatly gracious, of auspicious dreams, the mirror, the conqueror of enemies; maker of the Vedas, maker of mantras, wise, and the crusher of foes in battle.
महामेघनिवासी च महाघोरो वशीकरः । अग्निज्वालो महाज्वालो अतिधूम्रो हुतो हविः ॥ ५२ ॥
He who abides in great clouds, who is exceedingly fierce, the enchanter; whose flame is fire, whose blaze is immense, who is enveloped in thick smoke, who is the oblation and the offering.
वृषणः शङ्करो नित्यवर्चस्वी धूमकेतनः । नीलस्तथाङ्गलुब्धश्च शोभनो निरवग्रहः ॥ ५३ ॥
He who is virile, the beneficent one, ever radiant, bannered with smoke; who is dark-hued, attached to his devotees, beautiful, and without impediment.
स्वस्तिदः स्वस्तिभावश्च भागी भागकरो लघुः । उत्सङ्गश्च महाङ्गश्च महागर्भपरायणः ॥ ५४ ॥
He who grants well-being, who is the state of well-being, the possessor and giver of shares, who is light; who is both the support and the great body, devoted to the great womb.
कृष्णवर्णः सुवर्णश्च इन्द्रियं सर्वदेहिनाम् । महापादो महाहस्तो महाकायो महायशाः ॥ ५५ ॥
He who is dark in complexion and also golden, the sense of all embodied beings; whose feet are great, whose hands are great, whose body is vast, and whose fame is great.
महामूर्धा महामात्रो महानेत्रो निशालयः । महान्तको महाकर्णो महोष्ठश्च महाहनुः ॥ ५६ ॥
He whose head is great, whose measure is vast, whose eyes are immense, who is the abode of night; who is the great ender, whose ears are great, whose lips are great, and whose jaws are great.
महानासो महाकम्बुर्महाग्रीवः श्मशानभाक् । महावक्षा महोरस्को ह्यन्तरात्मा मृगालयः ॥ ५७ ॥
He whose nose is great, whose neck is mighty, whose throat is massive, who partakes of the cremation ground; whose chest is vast, whose breast is immense, who is the inner self, and who is the abode of wild creatures.
लम्बनो लम्बितोष्ठश्च महामायः पयोनिधिः । महादन्तो महादंष्ट्रो महाजिह्वो महामुखः ॥ ५८ ॥
He who is pendant, who has hanging lips, who is the great illusion, who is the ocean of milk; whose teeth are great, whose fangs are great, whose tongue is great, and whose mouth is great.
महानखो महारोमा महाकेशो महाजटः । प्रसन्नश्च प्रसादश्च प्रत्ययो गिरिसाधनः ॥ ५९ ॥
He whose nails are great, whose hair is great, whose locks are great and matted; who is gracious, who is favor, who is trustworthy, and who is the support of the mountain.
स्नेहनोऽस्नेहनश्चैव अजितश्च महामुनिः । वृक्षाकारो वृक्षकेतुरनलो वायुवाहनः ॥ ६० ॥
He is both affectionate and unaffectionate; unconquered, the great sage; of the form of a tree, with a banner of a tree; fire, and the bearer of wind.
गण्डली मेरुधामा च देवाधिपतिरेव च । अथर्वशीर्षः सामास्य ऋक्सहस्रामितेक्षणः ॥ ६१ ॥
He is Gaṇḍalī, the support of Meru, and indeed the lord of the gods; whose head is the Atharva Veda, whose mouth is the Sāma Veda, whose eyes are countless Ṛg Vedas.
यजुः पादभुजो गुह्यः प्रकाशो जङ्गमस्तथा । अमोघार्थः प्रसादश्च अभिगम्यः सुदर्शनः ॥ ६२ ॥
He has the Yajur Veda as his arms and feet, is hidden yet manifest, ever-moving; whose purpose is unfailing, who is gracious, approachable, and of beautiful vision.
उपकारः प्रियः सर्वः कनकः काञ्चनच्छविः । नाभिर्नन्दिकरो भावः पुष्करस्थपतिः स्थिरः ॥ ६३ ॥
He is helpful, beloved by all, golden, with a radiant golden hue; the navel, the giver of joy, existence itself, the lord dwelling in the lotus, steadfast.
द्वादशस्त्रासनश्चाद्यो यज्ञो यज्ञसमाहितः । नक्तं कलिश्च कालश्च मकरः कालपूजितः ॥ ६४ ॥
He is the first among those who wield twelve weapons, the embodiment of sacrifice, ever absorbed in sacrifice; he is night, the age of strife, time itself, the makara, and worshipped by time.
सगणो गणकारश्च भूतवाहनसारथिः । भस्मशयो भस्मगोप्ता भस्मभूतस्तरुर्गणः ॥ ६५ ॥
He is accompanied by attendants, the creator of hosts, the charioteer of the vehicle of spirits; he dwells in ashes, protects ashes, is himself turned to ashes, is the tree, and the multitude.
लोकपालस्तथाऽलोको महात्मा सर्वपूजितः । शुक्लस्त्रिशुक्लः सम्पन्नः शुचिर्भूतनिषेवितः ॥ ६६ ॥
He is the protector of the worlds, yet beyond the worlds; of great soul, worshipped by all; pure, thrice-pure, accomplished, immaculate, and served by beings.
आश्रमस्थः क्रियावस्थो विश्वकर्ममतिर्वरः । विशालशाखस्ताम्रोष्ठो ह्यम्बुजालः सुनिश्चलः ॥ ६७ ॥
He abides in hermitages, established in sacred rites, supreme in the mind of the cosmic artisan; of vast branches, copper-red lips, lotus-eyed, and unwavering.
कपिलः कपिशः शुक्ल आयुश्चैव परोः । गन्धर्वो ह्यदितिस्तार्क्ष्यः सुविज्ञेयः सुशारदः ॥ ६८ ॥
He is Kapila, tawny-hued, pure, the very life and the highest; he is Gandharva, Aditi, Tārkṣya, easily known, and eloquent.
परश्वधायुधो देवो ह्यनुकारी सुबान्धवः । तुम्बवीणो महाक्रोध ऊर्ध्वरेता जलेशयः ॥ ६९ ॥
The god wields the battle-axe as his weapon, imitates, is a true friend; he plays the Tumbavīṇā, is of great wrath, of upward-flowing seed, and lord of the waters.
