O daughter of the mountain, delight of the earth, joy of the universe, praised by Nandi; dweller atop the lofty Vindhya, playful with Vishnu, honored by the victorious; O goddess, consort of Shiva with the blue throat, mother of many, creator of abundance—victory, victory to you, destroyer of Mahishasura, with beautiful locks, child of the mountain!
सुरवरवर्षिणि दुर्धरधर्षिणि दुर्मुखमर्षिणि हर्षरते त्रिभुवनपोषिणि शङ्करतोषिणि कल्मषमोषिणि घोररते । [किल्बिष-, घोष-] दनुजनिरोषिणि दितिसुतरोषिणि दुर्मदशोषिणि सिन्धुसुते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ २ ॥
O bestower of blessings upon the gods, conqueror of the unconquerable, tolerant of the insolent, rejoicing in happiness; nourisher of the three worlds, delight of Shankara, remover of impurity, fierce in battle; enraged at the offspring of demons, destroyer of the arrogant, daughter of the ocean—victory, victory to you, destroyer of Mahishasura, with beautiful locks, child of the mountain!
अयि जगदम्ब मदम्ब कदम्बवनप्रियवासिनि हासरते शिखरिशिरोमणितुङ्गहिमालयशृङ्गनिजालयमध्यगते । मधुमधुरे मधुकैटभगञ्जिनि कैटभभञ्जिनि रासरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ ३ ॥
O mother of the world, my own mother, who loves to dwell in the fragrant Kadamba grove, radiant with laughter; residing in the midst of the lofty peaks of the Himalayas, your own abode; sweet as honey, destroyer of Madhu and Kaitabha, breaker of Kaitabha, rejoicing in the dance—victory, victory to you, destroyer of Mahishasura, with beautiful locks, child of the mountain!
अयि शतखण्ड विखण्डितरुण्ड वितुण्डितशुण्ड गजाधिपते रिपुगजगण्ड विदारणचण्ड पराक्रमशुण्ड मृगाधिपते । निजभुजदण्ड निपातितखण्डविपातितमुण्डभटाधिपते [चण्ड] जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ ४ ॥
O you who shattered the heads of hundreds, crushed the trunks of elephants, leader of elephants; fierce in tearing the cheeks of enemy elephants, mighty in valor, lord of beasts; by your own arms, you felled the chiefs of warriors, split their heads and crushed their skulls—victory, victory to you, destroyer of Mahishasura, with beautiful locks, child of the mountain!
अयि रणदुर्मद शत्रुवधोदित दुर्धरनिर्जर शक्तिभृते चतुरविचारधुरीण महाशिव दूतकृत प्रमथाधिपते । दुरितदुरीहदुराशयदुर्मतिदानवदूतकृतान्तमते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ ५ ॥
O you who, in battle, are intoxicated with might, who destroy enemies, who wield an unconquerable weapon, who are the supreme leader of Shiva’s hosts, who are the messenger of the great Shiva, and the master of the Pramathas; O you who bring ruin to the wicked, who shatter the hopes and minds of evil demons, who are the very thought of death for the messengers of the arrogant—victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
अयि शरणागतवैरिवधूवर वीरवराभयदायकरे त्रिभुवन मस्तक शूलविरोधिशिरोधिकृतामल शूलकरे । दुमिदुमितामर दुन्दुभिनाद महो मुखरीकृत तिग्मकरे जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ ६ ॥
O you who grant fearlessness to the heroic hands of the husbands of the wives of enemies who have sought your refuge; who, with your pure trident, have struck down the heads of the adversaries of the three worlds; whose fierce arms resound with the thunderous drumbeats of the gods—victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
अयि निजहुङ्कृतिमात्र निराकृत धूम्रविलोचन धूम्रशते समरविशोषित शोणितबीज समुद्भवशोणित बीजलते । शिव शिव शुम्भ निशुम्भ महाहव तर्पित भूत पिशाचरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ ७ ॥
O you who, with a mere utterance of your roar, dispelled hundreds of Dhūmralocana demons; who dried up the blood-seed lineage of Raktabīja on the battlefield; who delighted in the destruction of Shumbha and Nishumbha in the great war, satisfying the spirits and ghosts—victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
धनुरनुसङ्ग रणक्षणसङ्ग परिस्फुरदङ्ग नटत्कटके कनक पिशङ्गपृषत्कनिषङ्गरसद्भट शृङ्ग हतावटुके । कृतचतुरङ्ग बलक्षितिरङ्ग घटद्बहुरङ्ग रटद्बटुके जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ ८ ॥
O you whose golden bracelets flash as you string your bow in the heat of battle, whose arrows pierce the yellow-skinned warriors, felling the leaders of hostile armies; who, with clever strategy, direct your fourfold forces, while your troops, in many formations, roar in the fray—victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
सुरललना ततथेयि तथेयि कृताभिनयोदर नृत्यरते कृत कुकुथः कुकुथो गडदादिकताल कुतूहल गानरते । धुधुकुट धुक्कुट धिन्धिमित ध्वनि धीर मृदङ्ग निनादरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ ९ ॥
O delight of the gods, as you dance with expressive gestures, your waist sways gracefully; you keep time with the rhythmic clapping of your hands and the beat of the mace, delighting in melodious song. The deep, steady sound of the drum and the vibrant notes of the mṛdaṅga resound as you rejoice. Victory, victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
जय जय जप्य जये जय शब्दपरस्तुति तत्पर विश्वनुते भण भण भिञ्जिमि भिङ्कृतनूपुर सिञ्जितमोहित भूतपते । [झ-, झिं-] नटितनटार्ध नटीनटनायक नाटितनाट्य सुगानरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १० ॥
Victory, victory! You are praised with chants of triumph and words of acclaim, O universally worshipped one. The jingling of your anklets and the ringing of your ornaments enchant the lord of beings. You delight in the graceful dance, accompanied by skilled dancers and melodious music. Victory, victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
अयि सुमनः सुमनः सुमनः सुमनः सुमनोहर कान्तियुते श्रित रजनी रजनी रजनी रजनी रजनीकर वक्त्रवृते । सुनयन विभ्रमर भ्रमर भ्रमर भ्रमर भ्रमराधिपते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ ११ ॥
O one adorned with radiant beauty, charming to the noble-hearted, whose face shines like the moon amidst the night, O lotus-eyed one, whose glance is like a swarm of bees circling the lord of lotuses—victory, victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
सहित महाहव मल्लम तल्लिक मल्लित रल्लक मल्लरते विरचित वल्लिक पल्लिक मल्लिक भिल्लिक भिल्लिक वर्ग वृते । सितकृत फुल्लसमुल्लसितारुण तल्लज पल्लव सल्ललिते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १२ ॥
Surrounded by mighty wrestlers in the great arena, you engage in battle with strength and skill, accompanied by groups of warriors and hunters. You are adorned with garlands of blossoming flowers and fresh, tender leaves, shining with youthful radiance. Victory, victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
अविरलगण्डगलन्मदमेदुर मत्तमतङ्गज राजपते त्रिभुवनभूषणभूतकलानिधि रूपपयोनिधि राजसुते । अयि सुदतीजन लालसमानस मोहनमन्मथ राजसुते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १३ ॥
O princess, daughter of the king of elephants intoxicated by the ceaseless flow of ichor from their temples, O treasure of arts who has become the ornament of the three worlds, O ocean of beauty, O royal maiden whose enchanting form captivates the hearts of lovely women and stirs the passion of love—victory, victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, O daughter of the mountain!
कमलदलामल कोमलकान्ति कलाकलितामल भाललते सकलविलासकलानिलय क्रमकेलिचलत्कलहंसकुले । अलिकुल सङ्कुल कुवलय मण्डल मौलिमिलद्भकुलालि कुले जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १४ ॥
O one whose spotless brow shines with the delicate radiance of a lotus petal, adorned with the purest crescent moon, O abode of all graceful arts, moving amidst flocks of playful swans, O one whose hair is adorned with clusters of bakula flowers mingled with garlands of bees swarming around blue lotuses—victory, victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, O daughter of the mountain!
करमुरलीरववीजितकूजित लज्जितकोकिल मञ्जुमते मिलित पुलिन्द मनोहर गुञ्जित रञ्जितशैल निकुञ्जगते । निजगुणभूत महाशबरीगण सद्गुणसम्भृत केलितले जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १५ ॥
O one whose sweet nature puts to shame the cooing of cuckoos, as the melody of your flute enchants, O dweller in the forest groves on the mountain, where the charming songs of the Pulinda women resound, O one whose playground is filled with noble Shabara women whose own virtues are your ornaments—victory, victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, O daughter of the mountain!
कटितटपीत दुकूलविचित्र मयूखतिरस्कृत चन्द्ररुचे प्रणतसुरासुर मौलिमणिस्फुरदंशुलसन्नख चन्द्ररुचे । जितकनकाचल मौलिपदोर्जित निर्भरकुञ्जर कुम्भकुचे जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १६ ॥
O one whose waist is adorned with a yellow silk garment, whose brilliance outshines the moonlight, whose toe-nails, shining like the crescent moon, reflect the jewels on the bowed crowns of gods and demons, O one whose breasts surpass the rounded temples of victorious elephants and the peaks of golden mountains—victory, victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, O daughter of the mountain!
विजित सहस्रकरैक सहस्रकरैक सहस्रकरैकनुते कृत सुरतारक सङ्गरतारक सङ्गरतारक सूनुसुते । सुरथसमाधि समानसमाधि समाधिसमाधि सुजातरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १७ ॥
You are praised by the thousand-handed Indra, whose thousand hands you have subdued; you are the daughter of the one who defeated the demon Taraka in battle, and you are born of the one who conquered Taraka; you are honored by Suratha and Samadhi, whose devotion is equal and steadfast. Victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O lovely-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
पदकमलं करुणानिलये वरिवस्यति योऽनुदिनं स शिवे अयि कमले कमलानिलये कमलानिलयः स कथं न भवेत् । तव पदमेव परम्पदमित्यनुशीलयतो मम किं न शिवे जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १८ ॥
He who worships your lotus feet daily, O abode of compassion, surely becomes Shiva; O lotus-eyed one, O dwelling place of Lakshmi, how could he not attain that state? If I contemplate your feet as the supreme goal, O Shiva, what would not be accomplished for me? Victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O lovely-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
कनकलसत्कल सिन्धुजलैरनुसिञ्चिनुतेगुणरङ्गभुवं भजति स किं न शचीकुचकुम्भ तटीपरिरम्भ सुखानुभवम् । तव चरणं शरणं करवाणि नतामरवाणि निवासि शिवं जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १९ ॥
He who bathes the stage of virtues with golden, pure waters from the ocean surely experiences the joy of embracing the banks of Shachi's breast; I seek refuge in your feet, O Shiva, dwelling among the bowed gods. Victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O lovely-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
तव विमलेन्दुकुलं वदनेन्दुमलं सकलं ननु कूलयते किमु पुरुहूत पुरीन्दुमुखी सुमुखीभिरसौ विमुखीक्रियते । मम तु मतं शिवनामधने भवती कृपया किमुत क्रियते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ २० ॥
Your pure lunar lineage, your moon-like face, indeed illuminates everything; how could the moon-faced beauties of Indra's city turn away from you? In my view, if you grant me the wealth of Shiva's name through your grace, what more could be desired? Victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O lovely-haired one, daughter of the mountain!
अयि मयि दीनदयालुतया कृपयैव त्वया भवितव्यमुमे अयि जगतो जननी कृपयासि यथासि तथाऽनुभितासिरते । यदुचितमत्र भवत्युररि कुरुतादुरुतापमपाकुरु ते [मे] जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ २१ ॥
O Mother, out of compassion for me in my distress, you must show your mercy; O Mother of the world, be gracious as you are, and let your nature be experienced as it is. Do what is fitting here, O destroyer of enemies, and swiftly remove my suffering; victory, victory to you, O slayer of Mahishasura, O beautiful-haired one, O daughter of the mountain!
