Hanuman Chalisa

बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके सुमिरौ पवनकुमार बल बुद्धि विद्या देहु मोहि हरहु कलेश विकार ॥

Knowing my body to be lacking in wisdom, I remember the son of the wind; grant me strength, intelligence, and knowledge, and remove my afflictions and faults.

जय हनुमान ज्ञानगुणसागर । जय कपीश तिहु लोक उजागर ॥

Victory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue! Victory to the lord of the monkeys, who is renowned throughout the three worlds!

रामदूत अतुलित बलधामा । अंजनिपुत्र पवनसुत नामा ॥

Messenger of Rama, repository of incomparable strength, son of Anjani, and known as the son of the wind.

महावीर विक्रम बजरंगी । कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी ॥

Great hero, mighty and strong as a thunderbolt, you dispel evil thoughts and are the companion of good sense.

कंचन वरण विराज सुवेशा । कानन कुंडल कुंचित केशा ॥

With a golden complexion, you shine in splendid attire, wearing forest earrings and curly hair.

हाथ वज्र औरु ध्वजा विराजै । कांधे मूंज जनेवू साजै ॥

A thunderbolt and a banner gleam in your hands, and a sacred thread of grass adorns your shoulder.

शंकर सुवन केसरीनंदन । तेज प्रताप महा जगवंदन ॥

Son of Shiva and Kesari, your brilliance and glory are revered by the whole world.

विद्यावान गुणी अतिचातुर । राम काज करिवे को आतुर ॥

Endowed with knowledge, virtue, and great cleverness, you are ever eager to carry out Rama's work.

प्रभु चरित्र सुनिवे को रसिया । राम लखन सीता मन बसिया ॥

You delight in listening to the deeds of the Lord, and Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita dwell in your heart.

सूक्ष्मरूप धरि सियहि दिखावा । विकटरूप धरि लंक जरावा ॥

Assuming a subtle form, you appeared before Sita; taking on a fierce form, you set Lanka ablaze.

भीमरूप धरि असुर संहारे । रामचंद्र के काज संवारे ॥

Taking on a terrifying form, you destroyed the demons and accomplished the tasks of Rama.

लाय संजीवन लखन जियाये । श्रीरघुवीर हरषि वुर लाये ॥

You brought the life-restoring herb and revived Lakshmana; with great joy, you returned to Sri Raghavira.

रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बडायी । तुम मम प्रिय भरत सम भायी ॥

Raghupati praised you greatly, saying, 'You are as dear to me as my brother Bharata.'

सहस वदन तुम्हरो यश गावै । अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावै ॥

With a thousand mouths, your glory is sung; so saying, Sri Rama embraced you.

सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीशा । नारद शारद सहित अहीशा ॥

Sanaka and the other sages, Brahma and the great seers, Narada, Sarasvati, and the serpent king, together—

यम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते । कवि कोविद कहि सके कहाँ ते ॥

Even Yama, Kubera, and the guardians of the directions, as well as poets and scholars, are unable to fully describe your greatness.

तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहि कीन्हा । राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा ॥

You rendered great service to Sugriva; you brought him to Rama, and he regained his royal status.

तुम्हरो मंत्र विभीषण माना । लंकेश्वर भय सब जग जाना ॥

Vibhishana accepted your counsel, and the whole world knows that he became the lord of Lanka.

युग सहस्र योजन पर भानू । लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू ॥

You considered the sun, situated thousands of yojanas away, to be a sweet fruit and swallowed it.

प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माही । जलधि लांघि गये अचरज नाही ॥

Placing the Lord’s ring in your mouth, you crossed the ocean—this was no wonder.

दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते । सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते ॥

All difficult tasks in the world become easy through your grace.

राम दुवारे तुम रखवारे । होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे ॥

You are the guardian at Rama’s door; none may enter without your permission.

सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी शरणा । तुम रक्षक काहू को डरना ॥

All happiness is found in your refuge; with you as protector, there is nothing to fear.

आपन तेज संहारो आपै । तीनोँ लोक हांक तेँ कांपै ॥

By your radiance, all adversity is dispelled; at your roar, the three worlds tremble.

भूत पिशाच निकट नहिँ आवै । महावीर जब नाम सुनावै ॥

Ghosts and evil spirits do not come near, when the mighty hero’s name is heard.

नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा । जपत निरंतर हनुमत वीरा ॥

You destroy disease and remove all suffering, for those who ceaselessly repeat the name of brave Hanuman.

संकटसे हनुमान छुडावै । मन क्रम वचन ध्यान जो लावै ॥

Hanuman frees from distress anyone who brings mind, action, and speech to his contemplation.

सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा । तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा ॥

Rama, the ascetic king, reigns over all; you have accomplished all his tasks.

और मनोरथ जो कोयी लावै । तासु अमित जीवन फल पावै ॥ [** सोयि **]

And whoever brings any wish before you, receives boundless rewards in life.
