उत्पत्य च प्रगृह्योच्चैर्देवीं गगनमास्थितः । तत्रापि सा निराधारा युयुधे तेन चण्डिका
Leaping up, he seized the Goddess and soared into the sky; yet even there, unsupported, Caṇḍikā continued to fight him.
नियुद्धं खे तदा दैत्यश्चण्डिका च परस्परम् । चक्रतुः प्रथमं सिद्धमुनिविस्मयकारकम्
Then, in the sky, the asura and Caṇḍikā engaged each other in single combat, a contest that amazed the accomplished sages and ascetics.
ततो नियुद्धं सुचिरं कृत्वा तेनाम्बिका सह । उत्पात्य भ्रामयामास चिक्षेप धरणीतले
After fighting hand-to-hand for a long time with Ambikā, he lifted her up, spun her around, and hurled her to the earth.
स क्षिप्तो धरणीं प्राप्य मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगितः । अभ्यधावत दुष्टात्मा चण्डिकानिधनेच्छया
Thrown down, he reached the ground, raised his fist with force, and rushed at Caṇḍikā, his wicked mind intent on her destruction.
तमायान्तं ततो देवी सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरम् । जगत्यां पातयामास भित्त्वा शूलेन वक्षसि
Then the Goddess struck him, the lord of all the hosts of demons, as he approached, piercing his chest with her spear and casting him down upon the earth.
स गतासुः पपातोर्व्यां देवीशूलाग्रविक्षतः । चालयन् सकलां पृथ्वीं साब्धिद्वीपां सपर्वताम्
Wounded by the sharp point of the Goddess’s spear, he fell lifeless to the ground, shaking the entire earth with its oceans, islands, and mountains.
ततः प्रसन्नमखिलं हते तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि । जगत्स्वास्थ्यमतीवाप निर्मलं चाभवन्नभः
When that wicked one was slain, all creation became tranquil and content; the sky became clear and pure.
उत्पातमेघाः सोल्का ये प्रागासंस्ते शमं ययुः । सरितो मार्गवाहिन्यस्तथासंस्तत्र पातिते
The ominous clouds and meteors that had appeared before subsided; the rivers resumed their natural courses when he was struck down.
ततो देवगणाः सर्वे हर्षनिर्भमानसाः । बभूवुर्निहते तस्मिन् गन्धर्वा ललितं जगुः
Then all the hosts of gods, their hearts overflowing with joy, rejoiced at his defeat, and the Gandharvas sang melodious songs.
अवादयंस्तथैवान्ये ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः । ववुः पुण्यास्तथा वाताः सुप्रभो ऽभूद्दिवाकरः
Others played instruments, and groups of Apsaras danced; auspicious winds blew, and the sun shone with great brilliance.
देव्या हते तत्र महासुरेन्द्रे सेन्द्राः सुरा वह्निपुरोगमास्ताम् । कात्यायनीं तुष्टुवुरिष्टलाभाद् विकाशिवक्त्राब्जविकाशिताशाः
When the great lord of the demons was slain there by the Goddess, the gods, led by Agni and Indra, their faces blooming with joy at the fulfillment of their desires, praised Kātyāyanī.
देवि प्रपन्नार्तिहरे प्रसीद प्रसीद मातर्जगतो ऽखिलस्य । प्रसीद विश्वेश्वरि पाहि विश्वं त्वमीश्वरी देवि चराचरस्य
O Goddess, remover of the distress of those who take refuge in you, be gracious! Be gracious, Mother of the entire world! Be gracious, Sovereign of the universe, protect the world; you are the Lady of all that moves and does not move.
आधारभूता जगतस्त्वमेका महीस्वरूपेण यतः स्थितासि । अपां स्वरूपस्थितया त्वयैतद् आप्याय्यते कृत्स्त्रमलङ्घ्यवीर्ये
You alone are the foundation of the world, abiding as the very earth; by your presence as the essence of water, this entire world is nourished, O you of unfathomable power.
त्वं वैष्णवी शक्तिरनन्तवीर्या विश्वस्य बीजं परमासि माया । संमोहितं देवि समस्तमेतत् तेवं वै प्रसन्ना भुवि मुक्तिहेतुः
You are the Vaiṣṇavī power, of infinite strength; you are the supreme Māyā, the seed of the universe. All this is deluded by you, O Goddess; when you are pleased, you become the cause of liberation on earth.
विद्याः समस्तास्तव देवि भेदाः स्त्रियः समस्ताः सकला जगत्सु । त्वयैकया पूरितमम्बयैतत् का ते स्तुतिः स्तव्यपरा परोक्तिः
All forms of knowledge are but your aspects, O Goddess; all women in the worlds are your manifestations. By you alone is this universe filled, O Mother—what praise can there be for you? Any praise is but an indirect description.
सर्वभूता यदा देवी स्वर्गमुक्तिप्रदायिनी । त्वं स्तुता स्तुतये का वा भवन्तु परमोक्तयः
O Goddess, you grant heaven and liberation to all beings; when you are praised, what supreme words could suffice for your praise?
सर्वस्य बुद्धिरूपेण जनस्य हृदि संस्थिते । स्वर्गापवर्गदे देवि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
O Goddess Nārāyaṇī, who abides in the hearts of all people in the form of intelligence, who grants heaven and liberation, salutations to you.
कलाकाष्ठादिरूपेण परिणामप्रदायिनी । विश्वस्योपरतौ शक्ते नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
O Nārāyaṇī, who takes the form of time, moments, and other divisions, who brings about transformation, who is the power at the cessation of the universe, salutations to you.
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके । शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
O Nārāyaṇī, auspicious among all that is auspicious, O Śivā, accomplisher of all aims, refuge of the distressed, three-eyed one, fair-complexioned Gaurī, salutations to you.
सृष्टिस्थितिविनाशानां शक्तिभूते सनातनि । गुणाश्रये गुणमये नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
O Nārāyaṇī, eternal foundation of the powers of creation, preservation, and destruction, who is the support of the qualities, who is made of the qualities, salutations to you.
शरणागतदीनार्तपरित्राणपरायणे । सर्वस्यार्तिहरे देवि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
O Goddess Nārāyaṇī, devoted to the protection of those distressed and afflicted who have sought refuge, remover of all suffering, salutations to you.
हंसयुक्तविमानस्थे ब्रह्माणीरूपधारिणि । कौशाम्भः क्षरिके देवि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
O Goddess Nārāyaṇī, who dwells in an aerial chariot yoked with swans, who assumes the form of Brahmāṇī, who is the essence of pure waters, salutations to you.
त्रिशूलचन्द्राहिधरे महावृषभवाहिनि । माहेश्वरीस्वरूपेण नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
O bearer of the trident, the crescent moon, and the great serpent, riding the mighty bull, in the form of Māheśvarī—O Nārāyaṇī, I bow to you.
मयूरकुक्कुटवृते महाशक्तिधरे ऽमघे । कौमारीरूपसंस्थाने नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
Surrounded by the peacock and the cock, wielder of the great spear, resplendent in the form of Kaumārī—O Nārāyaṇī, I bow to you.
शङ्खचक्रगदाशार्ङ्गगृहीतपरमायुधे । प्रसीद वैष्णवीरूपे नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
Holding the conch, discus, mace, and bow Śārṅga, supreme weapons in hand, be gracious in your Vaiṣṇavī form—O Nārāyaṇī, I bow to you.
गृहीतोग्रमहाचक्रे दंष्ट्रोद्धृतवसुन्धरे । वराहरूपिणि शिवे नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
Holding the fierce great discus, lifting up the earth with your tusks, in the form of Varāha, O auspicious one—O Nārāyaṇī, I bow to you.
नृसिंहरूपेणोग्रेण हन्तुं दैत्यान् कृतोद्यमे । त्रैलोक्यत्राणसहिते नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
In the fierce form of Narasiṃha, intent on destroying the demons, united with the protection of the three worlds—O Nārāyaṇī, I bow to you.
किरीटिनि महावज्रे सहस्रनयनोज्ज्वले । वृत्रप्राणहरे चैन्द्रि नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
Crowned, bearing the great thunderbolt, shining with a thousand radiant eyes, slayer of Vṛtra's life, in the form of Indrāṇī—O Nārāyaṇī, I bow to you.
शिवदूतीस्वरूपेण हतदैत्यमहाबले । घोररूपे महारावे नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
O Narayani, I bow to you, who, in the form of Shivaduti, destroyed the mighty strength of the demons; fierce in appearance and terrifying in your roar.
दंष्ट्राकरालवदने शिरोमालाविभूषणे । चामुण्डे मुण्डमथने नारायणि नमो ऽस्तु ते
O Narayani, I bow to you, Chamunda, whose face is dreadful with protruding fangs, adorned with a garland of heads, crusher of skulls.
