माहेश्वरीत्रिशूलेन भिन्नाः पेतुस्तथापरे । वाराहीतुण्डघातेन केचिच्चूर्णोकृता भुवि
Some were struck down by Māheśvarī’s trident and fell, while others were pulverized on the earth by the blow of Vārāhī’s snout.
खण्डं खण्डं च चक्रेण वैष्णव्या दानवाः कृताः । वज्रेण चैन्द्रीहस्ताग्रविमुक्तेन तथापरे
The Dānavas were cut into pieces by Vaiṣṇavī’s discus, and others likewise by the thunderbolt hurled from Indrāṇī’s hand.
केचिद्विनेशुरसुराः केचिन्नष्टा महाहवात् । भक्षिताश्चापरे कालीशिवदूतीमृगाधिपैः
Some of the Asuras fled, some vanished from the great battle, and others were devoured by Kālī, Śivadūtī, and the lion.
ऋषिरुवाच निशुम्भं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरं प्राणसंमितम् । हन्यमानं बलं चैव शुम्भः क्रुद्धो ऽब्रवीद्वचः
The seer said: Seeing Niśumbha, his brother equal to his very life, slain, and his army being destroyed, Śumbha, enraged, spoke these words:
बलावलेपाद् दुष्टे त्वं मा दुर्गे गर्वमावह । अन्यासां बलमाश्रित्य युध्यसे यातिमानिनी
Out of arrogance in your strength, you are wicked—do not, O Durgā, boast! Relying on the power of others, you fight, thinking yourself superior.
एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा । पश्यैता दुष्ट मय्येव विशन्त्यो मद्विभूतयः
I alone am here in this world—who else is my equal? See, O wicked one, these are all entering into me; they are my own manifestations.
ततः समस्तास्ता देव्यो ब्रह्माणीप्रमुखा लयम् । तस्या देव्यास्तनौ जग्मुरेकावासीत्तदाम्बिका
Then all those goddesses, led by Brahmani, merged into dissolution; only Ambika remained there.
अहं विभूत्या बहुभिरिह रूपैर्यदास्थिता । सत्संहृतं मयैकैव तिष्ठाम्याजौ स्थिरो भव
Here, when I have manifested with many forms through my power, I alone remain when all is withdrawn; stand firm in battle.
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं देव्याः शुम्भस्य चोभयोः । पश्यतां सर्वदेवानामसुराणां च दारुणम्
Then a fierce battle began between the Devi and Shumbha, witnessed by all the gods and asuras.
शरवर्षैः शितैः शस्त्रैस्तथा चास्त्रैः सुदारुणैः । तयोर्युद्धमभूद् भूयः सर्वलोकभयङ्करम्
Their combat was again terrible, with showers of arrows, sharp weapons, and dreadful missiles, terrifying to all the worlds.
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि शतशो मुमुचे यान्यथाम्बिका । बभञ्ज तानि दैत्येन्द्रस्तत्प्रतीघातकर्तृभिः
Ambika released hundreds of divine weapons, but the lord of the daityas shattered them with counter-missiles.
मुक्तानि तेन चास्त्राणि दिव्यानि परमेश्वरी । बभञ्ज लीलयैवोग्रहुङ्कारोच्चारणादिभिः
And the Supreme Goddess, with ease, broke the divine missiles he released, by uttering fierce roars and other acts.
ततः शरशतैर्देवीमाच्छादयत सो ऽसुरः । सा च तत्कुपिता देवी धनुश्चिच्छेद चेषुभिः
Then that demon covered the Goddess with hundreds of arrows; and the Goddess, enraged, shattered his bow with her own arrows.
छिन्ने धनुषि दैत्येन्द्रस्तथा शक्तिमथाददे । चिच्छेद देवी चक्रेण तामप्यस्य करे स्थिताम्
When his bow was broken, the lord of the demons seized a spear; but the Goddess cut it, too, with her discus while it was still in his hand.
ततः खड्गमुपादाय शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत् । अभ्यधावत्तदा देवीं दैत्यानामधिपेश्वरः
Then, taking up a sword shining like the sun and adorned with a hundred moons, the chief of the demons rushed at the Goddess.
तस्यापतत एवाशु खड्गं चिच्छेद चण्डिका । धनुर्मुक्तैः शितैर्बाणैश्चर्म चार्ककरामलम्
As he swiftly approached, Chandika cut his sword with arrows released from her bow, and also his shield, which gleamed like the rays of the sun.
अश्वांश्च पातयामास रथं सारथिना सह । हताश्वः स तदा दैत्यश्छिन्नधान्वा विसारथिः । जग्राह मुद्गरं घोरमम्बिकानिधनोद्यतः
She made his horses fall, along with his chariot and charioteer; with his horses slain, bow broken, and charioteer gone, the demon then seized a dreadful mace, intent on destroying Ambika.
चिच्छेदापततस्तस्य मुद्गरं निशितैः शरैः । तथापि सो ऽभ्यधावत्तां मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगवान्
As he rushed forward, she cut his mace with sharp arrows; yet, he still charged at her, raising his fist with great speed.
स मुष्टिं पातयामास हृदये दैत्यपुङ्गवः । देव्यास्तं चापि सा देवी तलेनोरस्यताडयत्
That foremost of asuras struck the Goddess in the heart with his fist, and she, in turn, struck him on the chest with her palm.
तलप्रहाराभिहतो निपपात महीतले । स दैत्यराजः सहसा पुनरेव तथोत्थितः
Struck by the blow of her palm, the king of the asuras fell swiftly to the ground, but immediately rose up again.
उत्पत्य च प्रगृह्योच्चैर्देवीं गगनमास्थितः । तत्रापि सा निराधारा युयुधे तेन चण्डिका
Leaping up, he seized the Goddess and soared into the sky; yet even there, unsupported, Caṇḍikā continued to fight him.
नियुद्धं खे तदा दैत्यश्चण्डिका च परस्परम् । चक्रतुः प्रथमं सिद्धमुनिविस्मयकारकम्
Then, in the sky, the asura and Caṇḍikā engaged each other in single combat, a contest that amazed the accomplished sages and ascetics.
ततो नियुद्धं सुचिरं कृत्वा तेनाम्बिका सह । उत्पात्य भ्रामयामास चिक्षेप धरणीतले
After fighting hand-to-hand for a long time with Ambikā, he lifted her up, spun her around, and hurled her to the earth.
स क्षिप्तो धरणीं प्राप्य मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगितः । अभ्यधावत दुष्टात्मा चण्डिकानिधनेच्छया
Thrown down, he reached the ground, raised his fist with force, and rushed at Caṇḍikā, his wicked mind intent on her destruction.
तमायान्तं ततो देवी सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरम् । जगत्यां पातयामास भित्त्वा शूलेन वक्षसि
Then the Goddess struck him, the lord of all the hosts of demons, as he approached, piercing his chest with her spear and casting him down upon the earth.
स गतासुः पपातोर्व्यां देवीशूलाग्रविक्षतः । चालयन् सकलां पृथ्वीं साब्धिद्वीपां सपर्वताम्
Wounded by the sharp point of the Goddess’s spear, he fell lifeless to the ground, shaking the entire earth with its oceans, islands, and mountains.
ततः प्रसन्नमखिलं हते तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि । जगत्स्वास्थ्यमतीवाप निर्मलं चाभवन्नभः
When that wicked one was slain, all creation became tranquil and content; the sky became clear and pure.
उत्पातमेघाः सोल्का ये प्रागासंस्ते शमं ययुः । सरितो मार्गवाहिन्यस्तथासंस्तत्र पातिते
The ominous clouds and meteors that had appeared before subsided; the rivers resumed their natural courses when he was struck down.
ततो देवगणाः सर्वे हर्षनिर्भमानसाः । बभूवुर्निहते तस्मिन् गन्धर्वा ललितं जगुः
Then all the hosts of gods, their hearts overflowing with joy, rejoiced at his defeat, and the Gandharvas sang melodious songs.
अवादयंस्तथैवान्ये ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः । ववुः पुण्यास्तथा वाताः सुप्रभो ऽभूद्दिवाकरः
Others played instruments, and groups of Apsaras danced; auspicious winds blew, and the sun shone with great brilliance.
