कालदण्डाद्यमो दण्डं माशं चाम्बुपतिर्ददौ । प्रजापतिश्चाक्षमालां ददौ ब्रह्मा कमण्डलुम्
Yama gave her his staff of punishment, and Varuṇa gave her a noose; Prajāpati gave her a rosary, and Brahmā gave her a water-pot.
समस्तरोमकूपेषु निजरश्मीन् दिवाकरः । कालख्च दत्तवान् खड्गं तस्याश्चर्म च निर्मलम्
The sun bestowed his own rays into each of her pores; Kāla gave her a spotless sword and a flawless shield.
क्षीरोदश्चामलं हारमजरे च तथाम्बरे । चूडामणिं तथा दिव्यं कुण्डले कटकानि च
From the ocean of milk, she received a spotless necklace, garments that never fade, a divine crest-jewel, earrings, and armlets.
अर्धचन्द्रं तथा शुभ्रं केयूरान् सर्वबाहुषु । नूपुरौ विमलौ तद्वद् ग्रैवेयकमनुत्तमम् । अङ्गुलीयकरत्नानि समस्तास्वङ्गुलीषु च
She was given a pure crescent moon, bracelets for all her arms, flawless anklets, an incomparable necklace, and jeweled rings for each of her fingers.
विश्वकर्मा ददौ तस्यै परशुञ्चातिनिर्मलम् । अस्त्राण्यनेकरूपाणि तथाभेद्यं च दंशनम्
Viśvakarmā gave her a perfectly pure axe, weapons of many kinds, and an unbreakable shield.
अम्लानपङ्कजां मालां शिरस्युरसि चापराम् । अददज्जलधिस्तस्यै पङ्कजं चातिशोभनम्
The lord of waters gave her an unfading lotus garland for her head and another for her chest, as well as a most beautiful lotus.
हिमवान् वाहनं सिंहं रत्नानि विविधानि च । ददावशून्यं सुरया पानपात्रं धनाधिपः
Himavat gave her a lion as a mount and various precious gems; the lord of wealth gave her a drinking cup always filled with divine liquor.
शेषश्च सर्वनागेशो महामणिविभूषितम् । नागहारं ददौ तस्यै धत्ते यः पृथिवीमिमाम्
Śeṣa, lord of all serpents who upholds this earth, gave her a serpent-necklace adorned with great jewels.
अन्यैरपि सुरैर्देवी भूषणैरायुधैस्तथा । संमानिता ननादोच्चैः साट्टहासं मुहुर्मुहुः
The goddess was honored by the other gods as well, with ornaments and weapons; she laughed aloud again and again, with a resounding, mocking laughter.
तस्या नादेन घोरेण कृत्स्त्रमापूरितं नभः । अमायतातिमहता प्रतिशब्दो महानभूत्
By her terrible roar, the entire sky was filled; from that immense, unrestrained sound, a great echo arose.
चुक्षुभुः सकला लोकाः समुद्राश्च चकम्पिरे । चचाल वसुधा चेलुः सकलाश्च महीधराः
All the worlds were shaken, and the oceans trembled; the earth quaked, and all the mountains moved.
जयेति देवाश्च मुदा तामूचुः सिंहवाहिनीम् । तुष्टुवुर्मुनयश्चैनां भक्तिनम्रात्ममूर्तयः
With joy, the gods cried out to her who rides the lion, 'Victory!' The sages, their forms bowed in devotion, praised her as well.
दृष्ट्वा समस्तं संक्षुब्धं त्रैलोक्यममरारयः । सन्नद्धाखिलसैन्यास्ते समुत्तस्थुरुदायुधाः
Seeing the entire three worlds agitated, the enemies of the gods, fully armed and with all their armies arrayed, rose up.
आः किमेतदिति क्रोधादाभाष्य महिषासुरः । अभ्यधावत तं शब्दमशेषैरसुरैर्वृतः
Mahishasura, speaking in anger, said, 'Ah! What is this?' and, surrounded by all the asuras, rushed toward that sound.
स ददर्श ततो देवीं व्याप्तलोकत्रयां त्विषा । पादाक्रान्त्या नतभुवं किरीटोल्लिखिताम्बराम्
Then he beheld the Goddess, her radiance pervading the three worlds; the earth bowed beneath her tread, and her crown brushed against the sky.
क्षोभिताशेषपातालां धनुर्ज्यानिः स्वनेन ताम् । दिशो भुजसहस्रेण समन्ताद् व्याप्य संस्थिताम्
By the thunderous twang of her bowstring, the nether realms were shaken; she stood, her thousand arms extending in all directions, filling the quarters.
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तया देव्या सुरद्विषाम् । शस्त्रास्त्रैर्बहुधा मुक्तैरादीपितदिगन्तरम्
Then battle commenced between the Goddess and the enemies of the gods, with countless weapons and missiles unleashed, illuminating the horizons.
महिषासुरसेनानीश्चिक्षुराख्यो महासुरः । युयुधे चामरश्चान्यैश्चतुरङ्गबलान्वितः
The great demon Cikṣura, commander of Mahishasura’s army, fought alongside Camara and others, accompanied by troops of four divisions.
रथानामयुतैः षड्भिरुदग्राख्यो महासुरः । अयुध्यतायुतानाञ्च सहस्रेण महाहनुः
The mighty demon Udagra fought with sixty thousand chariots, and Mahāhanu engaged with a thousand companies of ten thousand warriors.
पञ्चाशद्भिश्च नियुतैरसिलोमा महासुरः । अयुतानां शतैः षड्भिर्वाष्कलो युयुधे रणे
Asiloma, the great demon, fought with fifty million troops, and Vāṣkala battled in the field with six hundred thousand units of ten thousand.
गजवाजिसहस्रौघैरनेकैरुग्रदर्शनः । वृतो रथानां कोट्या च युद्धे तस्मिन्नयुध्यत
In that battle, he fought, surrounded by thousands of elephants and horses, many fierce in appearance, and by a crore of chariots.
बिडालाक्षो ऽयुतानाञ्च पञ्चाशद्भिरथायुतैः । युयुधे संयुगे तत्र रथानां परिवारितः
Biḍālākṣa fought there in the battle, encircled by fifty thousand chariots and fifty thousand warriors.
वृतः कालो रथानाञ्च रणे पञ्चाशतायुतैः । युयुधे संयुगे तत्र तावद्भिः परिवारितः
Kāla, surrounded in the battle by fifty thousand chariots, fought there in the conflict, encircled by so many.
अन्ये च तत्रायुतशो रथनागहयैर्वृताः । युयुधुः संयुगे देव्या सह तत्र महासुराः
And other great asuras there, surrounded by tens of thousands of chariots, elephants, and horses, fought in battle with the Goddess.
कोटिकोटिसहस्रैस्तु रथानां दन्तिनां तथा । हयानाञ्च वृतो युद्धे तत्राभून्महिषासुरः
There, Mahishasura was surrounded in battle by crores upon crores of thousands of chariots, as well as elephants and horses.
तोमरैर्भिन्दिपालैश्च शक्तिभिर्मुसलैस्तथा । युयुधुः संयुगे देव्या खड्गैः परशुपट्टिशैः
They fought in battle with the Goddess, wielding spears, clubs, javelins, swords, axes, and pattiśas.
केचिच्च चिक्षिपुः शक्तीः केचित् पाशांस्तथापरे । देवीं खड्गप्रहारैस्तु ते तां हन्तुं प्रचक्रमुः
Some hurled spears, others threw nooses, and yet others attacked the Goddess with sword blows, seeking to slay her.
सापि देवी ततस्तानि शस्त्राण्यस्त्राणि चण्डिका । लीलयैव प्रचिच्छेद निजशस्त्रास्त्रवर्षिणी
But that Goddess Chandika, effortlessly and playfully, cut down those weapons and missiles, showering her own superior arms in return.
अनायस्तानना देवी स्तूयमाना सुरर्षिभिः । मुमोचासुरदेहेषु शस्त्राण्यस्त्राणि चेश्वरी
Unwearied, her face serene, the Goddess—praised by the gods and seers—released her weapons and missiles upon the bodies of the asuras.
सो ऽपि क्रुद्धो धुतसटो देव्या वाहनकेशरी । चचारासुरसैन्येषु वनेष्विव हुताशनः
Enraged, the lion who was the Goddess's mount, shook his mane and ranged through the asura armies like a blazing fire through forests.
