The wise sage advised King Suratha, saying, “Seek refuge in the Supreme Goddess, O great king. When worshipped, she bestows upon people enjoyment, heaven, and liberation.” Hearing these words, Suratha, the lord among men, humbly bowed to the illustrious sage, whose discipline and vows were unwavering. Troubled by his deep attachment and the loss of his kingdom, Suratha, accompanied by the merchant, resolved to undertake austerities. Their hearts yearning for a vision of the Divine Mother, they settled on the riverbank. There, the merchant devoted himself to reciting the supreme hymn to the Goddess, performing austerities with sincere longing. Together, on that riverbank, they fashioned an earthen image of the Goddess. With flowers, incense, fire, and libations, they offered her heartfelt worship. Fasting and practicing self-control, their minds wholly absorbed in devotion, they even offered a blood-sacrifice, moistening the offering with blood from their own bodies. For three years, they worshipped with unwavering discipline. At last, the Mother of the Universe, fully satisfied by their devotion, appeared before them and spoke: “Whatever you desire, O King, and you, delight of your lineage—let all be obtained from me. Satisfied, I grant your wishes.” The king requested his kingdom restored in this very life, free from enemies by force, and, in another birth, unbroken sovereignty. The merchant, weary of worldly attachments, asked for knowledge that severs the bonds of ‘mine’ and ‘I’—the wisdom that brings true freedom. The Goddess replied, “Within a few days, O King, you shall regain your kingdom, having vanquished your foes, and your lost realm will be restored. And when you depart this life, you will be born again on earth as Manu, named Sāvarṇi, son of the sun-god Vivasvat. O best of merchants, the boon you have requested, I grant to you; for your fulfillment, you shall attain knowledge.” Having bestowed these boons as they desired, the Goddess vanished, praised by them with heartfelt devotion. Thus, Suratha, having received the Goddess’s grace, will be reborn from the Sun and become Manu named Sāvarṇi, while the merchant will attain the liberating knowledge he sought.
