ततो युद्धपरिश्रान्तं समरे चिन्तया स्थितम्। रावणं चाग्रतो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम्
Then, seeing Ravana standing before him, ready for battle, Rama, exhausted from the fight, stood absorbed in thought on the battlefield.
दैवतैश्च समागम्य द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो रणम्। उपागम्याब्रवीद्राममगस्त्यो भगवान् ऋषिः
The gods had gathered, coming to witness the battle; approaching, the venerable sage Agastya spoke to Rama.
राम राम महाबाहो शृणु गुह्यं सनातनम्। येन सर्वानरीन् वत्स समरे विजयिष्यसि
Rama, Rama, mighty-armed one, listen to this ancient secret by which, dear child, you will conquer all enemies in battle.
आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम्। जयावहं जपेन्नित्यम् अक्षय्यं परमं शिवम्
The Aditya Hridaya is holy, destroys all foes, brings victory, and should be recited always; it is unfailing, supreme, and auspicious.
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्। चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनम् आयुर्वर्धनमुत्तमम्
He is the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious, the destroyer of all sins; he removes anxiety and sorrow, and is the supreme increaser of lifespan.
रश्मिमंतं समुद्यन्तं देवासुरनमस्कृतम्। पूजयस्व विवस्वन्तं भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम्
Worship the Sun, the radiant one rising with his rays, honored by gods and asuras alike; worship Vivasvat, Bhaskara, the Lord of the world.
सर्वदेवात्मको ह्येष तेजस्वी रश्मिभावनः। एष देवासुरगणाँल्लोकान् पाति गभस्तिभिः
He indeed embodies all the gods, is full of splendor, and the source of rays; with his beams, he protects the worlds and the hosts of gods and asuras.
एष ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च शिवः स्कन्दः प्रजापतिः। महेन्द्रो धनदः कालो यमः सोमो ह्यपां पतिः
He is Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Prajapati, Mahendra, Kubera, Time, Yama, Soma, and the Lord of the Waters.
पितरो वसवः साध्या ह्यश्विनौ मरुतो मनुः। वायुर्वह्निः प्रजाप्राण ऋतुकर्ता प्रभाकरः
He is the forefathers, the Vasus, the Sādhyas, the Ashvins, the Maruts, Manu, Vāyu, Agni, the source and breath of beings, the maker of seasons, the bringer of light.
आदित्यः सविता सूर्यः खगः पूषा गभस्तिमान्। सुवर्णसदृशो भानुर्हिरण्यरेता दिवाकरः
He is Āditya, Savitṛ, Sūrya, the sky-traveler, Pūṣan, the radiant one, shining like gold, the luminous one, of golden seed, the maker of the day.
हरिदश्वः सहस्रार्चिः सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान्। तिमिरोन्मथनः शम्भुस्त्वष्टा मार्ताण्ड अंशुमान्
He has tawny horses, a thousand rays, seven chariots, is full of beams, the dispeller of darkness, the auspicious one, the fashioner, the sun, the radiant one.
हिरण्यगर्भः शिशिरस्तपनो भास्करो रविः। अग्निगर्भोऽदितेः पुत्रः शङ्खः शिशिरनाशनः
He is the golden-embryo, the cool season, the heat-giver, the illuminator, the sun, the one whose womb is fire, the son of Aditi, the conch, the destroyer of cold.
व्योमनाथस्तमोभेदी ऋग्यजुःसामपारगः। घनवृष्टिरपां मित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवङ्गमः
He is the lord of the sky, the dispeller of darkness, the one who transcends the Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas; he is the friend who brings clouds and rain, the companion of waters, and the one who traverses the path of the Vindhya mountains.
आतपी मण्डली मृत्युः पिङ्गलः सर्वतापनः। कविर्विश्वो महातेजाः रक्तः सर्वभवोद्भवः॥ १४ नक्षत्रग्रहताराणामधिपो विश्वभावनः। तेजसामपि तेजस्वी द्वादशात्मन् नमोऽस्तु ते
He is radiant, circular, death itself, tawny, the one who scorches all; he is the poet, the universe, of great brilliance, red-hued, and the origin of all beings. He is the lord of the stars, planets, and constellations, the creator of the universe; more luminous than all lights, O twelve-formed one, I bow to you.
नमः पूर्वाय गिरये पश्चिमायाद्रये नमः। ज्योतिर्गणानां पतये दिनाधिपतये नमः
Salutations to the eastern mountain, salutations to the western mountain; salutations to the lord of the hosts of lights, salutations to the lord of the day.
जयाय जयभद्राय हर्यश्वाय नमो नमः। नमो नमः सहस्रांशो आदित्याय नमो नमः
Salutations to the victorious, to the auspicious victor, to the one with swift horses; salutations, salutations to the thousand-rayed one, to Aditya, salutations, salutations.
नम उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः। नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय मार्ताण्डाय नमो नमः
Salutations to the fierce one, the heroic one, the one bearing the deer-mark; repeated salutations. Salutations to the awakener of the lotus, to the offspring of Martanda; repeated salutations.
ब्रह्मेशानाच्युतेशाय सूर्यायादित्यवर्चसे। भास्वते सर्वभक्षाय रौद्राय वपुषे नमः
Salutations to the lord of Brahma, Ishana, and Achyuta; to Surya, the radiance among the Adityas; to the shining one, the all-consuming one, the fierce-bodied one.
तमोघ्नाय हिमघ्नाय शत्रुघ्नायामितात्मने। कृतघ्नघ्नाय देवाय ज्योतिषां पतये नमः
Salutations to the destroyer of darkness, the dispeller of cold, the vanquisher of enemies, the one of boundless essence; to the destroyer of the ungrateful, to the god, to the lord of the luminaries.
तप्तचामीकराभाय वह्नये विश्वकर्मणे। नमस्तमोऽभिनिघ्नाय रुचये लोकसाक्षिणे
Salutations to the one whose radiance resembles molten gold, to the fire, to the universal creator; salutations to the one who utterly dispels darkness, to the shining one, the witness of the worlds.
नाशयत्येष वै भूतं तदेव सृजति प्रभुः। पायत्येष तपत्येष वर्षत्येष गभस्तिभिः
He destroys beings, and he himself creates them again; he protects, he heats, and he causes rain with his rays.
एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति भूतेषु परिनिष्ठितः। एष एवाग्निहोत्रं च फलं चैवाग्निहोत्रिणाम्
He remains awake among those who sleep, established among all beings; he alone is the Agnihotra ritual and its fruit for those who perform it.
वेदाश्च क्रतवश्चैव क्रतूनां फलमेव च। यानि कृत्यानि लोकेषु सर्व एष रविः प्रभुः
He is the Vedas, the sacrifices, and the fruit of sacrifices; all actions in the worlds—he, the Sun, is their master.
फलश्रुतिः॥ एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तारेषु भयेषु च। कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव
Whoever, O Raghava, recites this in calamities, hardships, wilderness, or fear, does not sink into despair.
पूजयस्वैनमेकाग्रो देवदेवं जगत्पतिम्। एतत् त्रिगुणितं जप्त्वा युद्धेषु विजयिष्यसि
With single-pointed focus, worship the Lord of gods, the Lord of the universe; by reciting this three times, you will be victorious in battle.
अस्मिन् क्षणे महाबाहो रावणं त्वं वधिष्यसि। एवमुक्त्वा तदागस्त्यो जगाम च यथागतम्
At this very moment, O mighty-armed one, you will slay Ravana; having spoken thus, Agastya then departed as he had come.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजा नष्टशोकोऽभवत्तदा। धारयामास सुप्रीतो राघवः प्रयतात्मवान्
Hearing this, the radiant one was freed from sorrow; filled with joy, Raghava, disciplined in mind, composed himself.
आदित्यं प्रेक्ष्य जप्त्वा तु परं हर्षमवाप्तवान्। त्रिराचम्य शुचिर्भूत्वा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान्
Gazing upon the Sun and reciting the hymn, he attained supreme delight; having performed the ritual purification three times, pure in body, the valiant one took up his bow.
रावणं प्रेक्ष्य हृष्टात्मा युद्धाय समुपागमत्। सर्वयत्नेन महता वधे तस्य धृतोऽभवत्
Seeing Ravana, his heart filled with joy, he approached for battle; with all his great effort, he became resolute on slaying him.
अथ रविरवदन्निरीक्ष्य रामं मुदितमनाः परमं प्रहृष्यमाणः। निशिचरपतिसंक्षयं विदित्वा सुरगणमध्यगतो वचस्त्वरेति
Then the Sun, beholding Rama, delighted in mind and supremely joyful, knowing the destruction of the lord of the night-walkers, spoke these words swiftly amidst the assembly of gods.
